Chapter 396: The Truth
Chapter 396: The Truth
James reached out and pulled Yvonne into his arms. He wanted to do this when she talked about her mother a moment ago.
Yvonne didn’t move and let him hold her. She leaned her head on his chest and slowly said, "I must find out the truth. This is what I should do as a daughter."
Her tone was a little firm.
If she couldn’t even do this, she would feel ashamed of herself.
Hearing this, James felt a little frustrated. He paused and said, "If you insist, I’ll join you. I feel so sorry for what I said before. I shouldn’t have forced you to say it all."
James was blaming himself.
Yvonne could understand how he felt. If she were him, she would do the same.
Yvonne did not blame James. After a pause, she said, "It’s all in the past."
Then they stayed quietly in the car for a while.
James was about to start the car when his phone rang.
James checked and found it was his assistant Hammer. He then quickly picked up the call.
"Mr. Taylor, Jeff is awake."
Hearing this, James was stunned. He then turned to Yvonne and said, "Jeff is awake."
Yvonne immediately responded, "Go to the hospital now."
"Okay."
James hung up the phone and started the car.
Soon, they arrived at the hospital.
They got out of the car and hurried to the ward.
Jeff awoke from a coma, and his physiological state returned to normal. Shortly afterward, he was sent to a general ward.
Hammer led James and Yvonne to the ward.
"Mr. Taylor, Jeff is inside."
James nodded. He looked at Yvonne and asked hesitantly, "Do you want me to go in with you?"
His tone sounded questioning. After all, what Yvonne wanted to know was so secretive. James was not sure if she would mind his company.
Yvonne looked at him and said blandly, "Come along."
Hearing this, James felt a little relieved.
Even if she refused to let him go inside, he could understand that.
But actually, he hoped that she could truly trust him.
James nodded, turned to instruct Hammer, and then walked in with Yvonne.
The ward was so quiet. Only the beeping sound emanating from the heart monitor could be heard.
Jeff lay on the bed. Some medical devices were still in place.
Yvonne and James slowly walked over and stopped in front of the bed, looking down at Jeff. Although his eyes were closed, they could see from the heart monitor that his heart rate returned to normal.
Jeff might pretend to be asleep right now.
"Drop the act. We know you’re awake," James said.
Sure enough, Jeff opened his eyes slowly. He pondered for a moment with his eyelids lowered before looking up at them.
When he saw Yvonne, his eyes were filled with gratitude. He then forced himself to sit up.
Seeing this, James stepped forward and pressed the button to raise the bed.
The head of the bed slowly rose, and Jeff raised himself into a sitting position.
"Thank you." Jeff sat back comfortably and then gave James a grateful look.
James ignored and returned to his original position with a poker face. James was not helping him but Yvonne.
Jeff could tell that everything about James suggested a carefully dressed authority, so he didn’t say anything else. Instead, he turned his gaze to Yvonne’s face with a mixture of feelings. "Thank you ... for saving me."
Yvonne replied coldly, "I saved you with a purpose. You know what it is."
Jeff did not speak but closed his eyes weakly.
Then he said, "You want to know ... what happened more than a decade ago."
"That’s right," Yvonne responded coldly.
Jeff paused for a moment before he continued, "Actually, even if you didn’t ask, I planned to tell you. I’ve been holding all inside for too long. If I could tell you the truth before I died, I could rest in peace."
As he spoke, he covered his mouth and coughed violently. He then spread out his hands and saw a mouthful of blood.
Yvonne knew this was a common symptom of stomach cancer. After a pause, she took out a wipe from her pocket and handed it to him.
Jeff reached out his trembling hand and took it, full of so much gratitude.
He then wiped away the bloodstains on his hands and said, "Years ago, I was a graduating senior. During the school anniversary, I took a shine to a girl. Later, I made a move on her. I sent her flowers and gifts, and I told her about my feelings at the door of the dormitory. I did a lot of crazy things, but unfortunately, she rejected me."
Jeff continued with a wry smile, "I was too naive. I thought she would be my girlfriend. Unexpectedly, not only did I fail to get her, but I got into trouble."
Jeff stopped to catch his breath and then continued, "It was a weekend. I asked her out, and she agreed. I thought she agreed to be my girlfriend, but something unexpected happened. She asked, ’Do you really like me?’ I was stunned for a few seconds and then nodded. She went on, ’Okay, as long as you help me with something, I will be your girlfriend’. I agreed."
He sneered, "One night, she called and told me that she was waiting for me in a hotel. When I arrived, I found another woman besides her there. That woman was your mother."
He looked at Yvonne with some shame.
Yvonne still stood there and listened to him quietly. Her hands, which were hanging by her side, tightened into fists.
Seeing this, James stepped forward and put his arm around her shoulder to give her strength.
Yvonne glanced at James gratefully and then said to Jeff, "What happened next?"
"Later, she told me what she wanted me to do. At first, I refused. I had my own principles. Besides, your mother had no consciousness. But that girl threatened me, saying that since I was already here, I had no way out. If I quit, she would call the police. I was afraid. I could only do what she said."
...
James noticed something was wrong with Yvonne. Although she did not overreact, her hands hanging at her sides were trembling. She looked as if she would punch Jeff in the face the next second.
Seeing this, James hurriedly reached out to press her fists and said soothingly, "Calm down."
Hearing this, Yvonne slowly unclenched her fists.
Jeff took notice and hurriedly explained, "Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t do anything to her."
He did not look like he was lying. Yvonne then gradually calmed down.
"What did you do after that?" Yvonne asked through her gritted teeth.
Jeff then continued, "After the girl left, I took some photos with your mother. But I swear I didn’t even touch her."
"You mean you posed for those photos?" Yvonne hurriedly rushed over and grabbed his shoulders.
Taken aback, Jeff coughed and nodded with a pale face.
Yvonne then let go of him. Her mother turned out to be innocent.
She knew it.
Yvonne couldn’t help shedding tears. She was scared to death before, afraid to hear something unacceptable.
It took her a while to calm down. Suddenly, she remembered something else and asked, "Tell me. Was it Grace who threatened you to do all this?"
Jeff was slightly surprised. Then he nodded slowly.
Yvonne thought to herself, <Sure enough, Grace was behind the whole thing.
One more thing. The White family never suspected a ruse.
Did they just look at the photos and then make a judgment?>
Thinking of this, Yvonne asked, "No one approached you for confirmation?"
Jeff paused and said, "After that day, Grace gave me a large sum of money and told me to find a place to hide. I was so scared. I hid in the mountains, and no one could find me."
Only then did Yvonne realize something.
Grace did not give Kathy a chance to speak.
Kathy killed herself. Everyone thought she did this because she felt ashamed. So no investigation was carried out.
Grace came up with such an elaborate plan at a very young age. She was deep and scheming.
What a horrible woman!
"Yvonne, are you okay?" James looked at her pale face and asked worriedly.
Yvonne then looked back at him and shook her head.
After leaving the hospital, Yvonne kept pondering. Since she figured out what happened back then, she had nothing to fear from Grace.
Yvonne said to James, "I have to go meet the Whites."
James responded immediately, "I’ll go with you."
"No need," Yvonne said, "I can handle it myself."
Her face was bright with determination.
James did not insist. "Okay, I’ll let Hammer keep you company."
Yvonne nodded in agreement.
That night, Yvonne went back to the White’s, followed by Hammer.
They arrived soon. Yvonne walked in the door, while Hammer was waiting for her outside.
It was dinner time. Just as she walked in, she heard the noise coming from inside.
There was a lot of laughter.
It was a weekend. The White family had an unwritten rule that there should be a family reunion every weekend night.
Sure enough, all the Whites were around the table except Yvonne.
The White family was in a life-or-death situation, but they were still in the mood for a family reunion.
Yvonne let out a sneer and walked over to them.
"Yvonne?" Lisa was the first one to see her and get up in surprise.
At this, everyone stopped eating and looked over towards her with surprise.
Her father Brant, in particular, was almost speechless. Only after a long moment did he get up and order a maid, "Go get Yvonne a set of cutleries."
Brant then came over and said excitedly to Yvonne, "Yvonne, why didn’t you call me? I didn’t prepare your favorite food."
Before Yvonne had the chance to speak, Grace put in sarcastically, "Yvonne is Mrs. Taylor now. She has tried all kinds of delicacies. I’m afraid she won’t like the dishes you prepare."
The crowd cast their disdainful yet envious eyes over her.
Yvonne didn’t care. She wasn’t here for dinner anyway.
Brant tried to conceal his annoyance and said, "Yvonne, don’t listen to her. Come join me."
He pulled her towards the table, but she didn’t move at all.
Brant was somewhat embarrassed. "Yvonne, sit down and talk."
Yvonne still stood there.
Brant looked more awkward.
At this time, Lisa came over and said, "Brant, I think Yvonne must be very tired. Let her have some rest."
Yvonne was aware of Lisa’s good intentions. Yvonne kept her promise to find a good job for Lisa’s worthless son. Naturally, Lisa sided with her.
Even with this put aside, Yvonne still felt grateful to Lisa.
Thinking of this, Yvonne did not make things difficult for Lisa but said to the crowd seriously, "I’m not here for dinner. I have something to say."
The Whites all looked over her.
Looking at Yvonne through the narrow slits of her eyes, Grace wondered if she had any suspicion.
Surveying her confident face, Grace was instantly alerted.
Grace had confronted Yvonne.
Yvonne dwelt on her mother’s death, and she had almost no scruples about Grace.
From the moment Yvonne entered, Grace noticed that she came prepared with an aura of righteous anger.
So why was she here today?
Grace couldn’t help but remember the suggestion she had given Yvonne earlier.
In the past few days, Grace had been so busy setting those rumors against the company to rest. She hadn’t had time to deal with that matter.
Could it be that Yvonne suddenly returned because of that? Grace thought it was impossible, but she had to be on guard.
Grace sneered, "You’re in the White’s house. Don’t play all high and mighty with me."
After that, she turned to the crowd and said threateningly, "Are you going to eat or not?"
