Chapter 395: It Won’t Happen Again
Chapter 395: It Won’t Happen Again
"Since she has owned up to it, we will not press charges against her. Sign here and take her back. Do not commit it again."
Hearing what the police officer said, James turned his eyes upon Yvonne, who was sitting there in a sterile suit, head down.
Yvonne slowly raised her eyes to look at James for a moment. Then she hurriedly averted her gaze from him with a sense of guilt.
Seeing her like this, James did not ask more questions but turned to the police officer. "Thank you."
Then he signed his name on the bail bond.
Only after all the formalities were completed did James walk over towards Yvonne with his hand outstretched.
"Let’s go."
Yvonne paused for a moment before putting her hand in his warm clasp. James then pulled her up from the chair and toward the door.
Yvonne followed behind him, her hand firmly held by him.
James set off at a quick march, while Yvonne was trotting along behind him.
Yvonne could tell that he was furious.
James held the passenger door open for her, shoved her in rudely, and fastened her seat belt.
Then he shut the door with a bang.
Yvonne sat there, hardly daring to move. She could feel his anger through the door.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him sit in the driver’s seat and then start the car.
Only then did Yvonne breathe a long sigh of relief, but she still did not dare to look him in the eye.
Even when she rejected him so ruthlessly before, he didn’t blow up like this.
But this time she got him so mad.
Yvonne became even more apprehensive. She peeked at James from time to time and wanted to explain herself. But she simply did not know where to start.
All the way back, Yvonne didn’t find an opportunity to speak.
When she came in sight of the house, she summoned the courage to apologize, "I’m sorry."
Hearing this, James suddenly hit the brakes.
Yvonne did not prepare herself for that. Because of the inertia, her body leaned forward and almost bumped into the front windshield.
Yvonne was still in shock for a few seconds before she calmed down. She then looked at him in confusion.
"What are you apologizing for?" James spoke with sarcasm in his voice, his eyes staring angrily ahead of him.
Yvonne knew this was simply a demonstration of discontent.
She shouldn’t have been impulsive and ventured into the ICU. If the hospital had not let her off the hook, her medical license would have been revoked.
Yvonne paused and said, "I shouldn’t have done that. I won’t do it again."
"What on earth did you think you were doing?" James looked at her in the eye.
Yvonne didn’t understand what he meant.
James averted his eyes and snorted, "Did it even occur to you to tell me?"
He was angry, and his eyes kept that mocking smile. Yvonne felt a little uneasy.
James reached out and pushed open the car door and got out of the car.
Seeing this, Yvonne was about to follow him out of the car. But to her surprise, he shut the car door, then leaned on it, and quietly smoked a cigarette.
...
James took a long drag and exhaled clouds of smoke.
Yvonne then withdrew her hand from the car door.
She knew James was trying so hard to contain himself.
Hardly daring to get out of the car, Yvonne sat quietly in the car and stared at his back through the smoke.
After a long silence, James finally snuffed out the cigarette and returned to the car.
However, he didn’t start the car. Instead, he casually placed his hand on the steering wheel and knocked on it a few times before he said slowly, "I thought I could give you a better life, but I didn’t expect things to turn out like this. I’m starting to doubt if I have the ability to do so.
James smiled self-deprecatingly.
When Yvonne heard this, for some reason, she panicked. She quickly shook her head and said, "Don’t say that. Please don’t."
"Tell me. Are you happy with me?" James looked at her and asked rhetorically.
Yvonne was momentarily at a loss for words. She did not know how to respond.
Yvonne could only look away in a panic.
James said with a slight sneer, "In fact, I know the answer. You’ve got it written all over your face."
James cast his eyes down and looked out of the window.
Yvonne looked at the side of his face. Her answer was yes. She was happier than she had been for more than 20 years.
But she hadn’t avenged her mother yet. The gloom deepened.
Yvonne opened her mouth, but no words came out.
James looked out of the window. After a long while, he turned his eyes back to her and said slowly, "When I first met you, you were bold, enthusiastic, and resourceful. You were much brighter than you are now. And I got lost in your eyes."
James recalled how dazzling Yvonne had been, his eyes shining lively. But when he forced his mind back to the present and his eyes back on her lifeless face, the light went out of his eyes.
Her old self was animated like a blooming flower, whereas she was now gloomy and lifeless like a flower long past its prime. There was no vitality in her at all.
Yvonne was only in her twenties, the best time of her life. But she looked like she’d been through a hell of a lot.
Thinking of this, James couldn’t help closing his eyes sadly.
"But look at you now..." he felt powerless.
James loved and cherished her, but she didn’t feel happier than before. Instead, she had a cloud of worries hanging over her. He did not know what the problem was.
"What’s wrong...?" Yvonne met his gaze and felt a little uneasy.
James’s throat was dry. He tore off the tie and threw it aside.
Since she asked, he might as well say it all.
James said bluntly, "You look gloomy and dull, and you’ve been a bit distracted of late. Yvonne, you make me doubt myself. I wonder if I could give you a better life."
....
James couldn’t go on. He covered his face with his hands and restrained himself.
His face looked extremely strained especially when he saw Yvonne at the police station.
Seeing him like this, Yvonne felt full of remorse. She wanted to explain but didn’t know where to start.
"I’m sorry..."
"You don’t trust me with your life?" James moved his hands away and interrupted.
James could tolerate being ignorant of why Yvonne had to find Jeff. And he would like to give her time to explain it. But she refused to open up to him. His tolerance for that was minimal.
Yvonne fell silent. She didn’t know how to explain to James. Was she really going to tell him about her mother? Minutes passed in silence, but Yvonne never responded.
James’ heart sank. He didn’t want to force her to say it, but he could not bear to see her go on this way any longer.
Yvonne was still mute. Did James have to be more heartless?
James closed his eyes. It was a real struggle to decide.
He thought he could not do that.
Finally, James gave up and couldn’t help but sigh. Forget it. There was nothing he could do.
If he went on like this, he would be driven crazy.
James calmed himself down and turned to start the car, but then Yvonne reached out to stop him.
"Now I’m going to tell you everything I’ve hidden in my heart."
With great determination, Yvonne suddenly opened her mouth as if she had made a big decision.
Only then did James slowly remove his hand from the steering wheel.
"Do you know how my mother died?" Yvonne asked slowly.
James was stunned and turned his eyes to her face.
James only knew that Yvonne’s mother had passed away when Yvonne was very young, but the cause of death was not known.
James slowly shook his head.
Yvonne thought to herself, "Sure enough, someone blocked access to the news in time."
All the secrets the rich and powerful kept would come out one day.
But James had no clue how Yvonne’s mother died.
With money and power, the White family hid any information about it from the whole world.
If Yvonne hadn’t seen her mother jump down from upstairs with her own eyes, she would have probably been kept in the dark until now.
Thinking of this, Yvonne said with a heavy heart, "She jumped off a building."
Hearing this, James was shocked, his eyes open wide. His heart went out to her, and it swelled with guilt and compassion.
Yvonne did not look at him in the eye, but she knew exactly how he felt.
Yvonne didn’t want him to look at her like that, so she refused to talk about her mother earlier.
Yvonne continued calmly, "That day was her birthday. I got a little surprise for her. But I didn’t expect to go through such a terrible moment. She jumped and fell at my feet. Her face was just a mass of blood."
She looked detached, but her hands squeezed into fists, and her nails dug into her flesh. She gritted her teeth and endured the excruciating pain.
James noticed something wrong with her. He found her hands under the chair and forcibly pried her fists open. When he saw the blood dripping from her hands, he froze.
If he had known she had been in such distress for so long, he would not have interrogated her.
James hurriedly got some medicine and gauze from a survival kit. Then he carefully cleaned her wounds with cotton swabs, for fear of hurting her. However, he found that her face was not etched with pain.
Yvonne showed remarkable endurance in front of him.
James was heartbroken. How much he wished she could show weakness!
Yvonne stared expressionlessly at his hand. She did not feel any pain when he helped her stop the bleeding.
Yet her heart was aching.
Yvonne stared at her wounds and continued, "Why don’t you ask me why she jumped?"
James stopped having her wounds dressed and said in a rigid voice with distress, "We are done here, okay?"
"No, I want to continue." Yvonne’s eyes met his, hers naked with determination.
She made up her mind to say it all.
She then continued, "If we’re getting married tomorrow, I’ll tell you she jumped because she couldn’t cope with depression."
Yvonne always thought that depression killed her mother.
"But in fact, she was killed by someone," Yvonne added with a poker face.
Hearing this, James paused again. After a while, he quickly bandaged up her hands. He looked up at her, his eyes full of pity. He opened his mouth to stop her, but no words came out.
Finally, he decided to listen to her carefully.
Yvonne glanced at her bandaged hands and gradually calmed down. She paused for a moment before continuing, "There were some indecent photos. I don’t know where they came from. The only thing I know is that they have something to do with Jeff. That’s why I can’t let him die."
After she finished speaking, she closed her eyes as though a heavy burden had been lifted from her shoulders and leaned against the back of the chair.
This thing had been weighing upon her like a great stone.
She tried to tell him about it, but she couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Now she made it. It was not a hard job.
Yvonne had been worried about what James would think of her mother.
But now she no longer cared.
Because she always believed that her mother was innocent.
"This is the secret that I’ve been hiding within myself. And it explains why I agreed to marry you. I do not know exactly what the truth is, but I’m sure that Grace is behind the whole thing. Earlier, I wanted to avenge my mother with your help. Now you know everything. It’s okay if you don’t want to help."
Yvonne then looked out of the window.
James stared at the side of her face silently. In fact, when she mentioned that her mother had committed suicide by jumping off a building, he no longer wanted to know the ins and outs of this matter.
He did not stop her from continuing because she had been holding all inside for too long.
She needed a sympathetic listener even though she was strong.
James paused for a moment and said, "We are a couple. Your business is my business. Leave it to me. I’ll get someone to look into it in secret. You don’t have to worry about it anymore."
