Chapter 394: He Pretended To Know Nothing
Chapter 394: He Pretended To Know Nothing
So before Yvonne arrived, Hammer had already disinfected the room under James’ orders.
That bewildered Yvonne. Did they do that just because the room was dirty and messy?
A cough broke into Yvonne’s thoughts.
It came from inside.
Jeff must be coughing.
He sounded quite sick.
With that thought in mind, Yvonne slowly walked over.
Yvonne stopped at the bedside and looked down at the man lying on the bed. As thin as a matchstick, Jeff was coughing, with his chest heaving and swelling. He seemed to have a lung disease.
Yvonne instinctively patted his back to help him bring up phlegm.
Yvonne was a doctor. This was her first reaction. It had nothing to do with who he was.
Jeff felt better now. Yvonne then poured him a glass of water and handed it to him.
She didn’t step back until he finished drinking the water.
"Excuse me, are you Jeff Reed?" Yvonne asked.
Hearing this, Jeff, who felt much better, slowly raised his eyes to stare up into Yvonne’s face. Instead of answering her question, he said weakly, "Thank you."
Yvonne continued, her face expressionless, "You don’t have to thank me. I’m a doctor. I was just doing my job. Also, I’m Kathy Perry’s daughter."
Jeff leaned his head on the bed with his eyes half-closed. When he heard Yvonne mention Kathy, his eyes fluttered open. Then he pretended to cough to divert her attention.
But he failed. Yvonne took notice. He still remembered her mother.
Thinking of this, Yvonne continued, "You must remember her. She’s Brant’s wife."
Yvonne surveyed his face as she spoke. However, she could no longer read any emotion from his thin white face.
Yvonne didn’t give up. "You still can’t remember? Fine. Do you know Grace? Grace White."
As expected, a muscle in his face twitched and his eyes darted back and forth. He looked a little scared.
Yvonne hurriedly said, "Don’t be afraid. She didn’t send me. I just want to know what
happened between you and my mother back then."
At that, Jeff started trembling.
"I... don’t know..."
He shook his head desperately.
Yvonne was a little anxious. "How could you not know? Try a little harder. Did Grace threaten you? Don’t be afraid. She won’t dare to hurt you."
Jeff put his head in his hands, avoiding eye contact with her. "I don’t know... anything..."
His eyes were full of fear, and he began to cough violently.
Yvonne was anxious and angry. She finally met him. She must get him to say what he knew.
She would never give up.
"There’s no way you didn’t know anything. You’re in that photo. Tell me! What happened between you and my mother? Say something!"
Jeff kept coughing, and his entire body started twitching.
"Yvonne,"
....
At this time, James, who was waiting outside the door, heard her hissing and then rushed in. Yvonne was a little out of control. James hurriedly pulled her to the side.
"Yvonne, calm down."
"How am I supposed to calm down? Jeff’s playing dumb. He obviously knows everything, but he just doesn’t tell me."
Yvonne pulled James’ hand away and rushed to Jeff, her eyes red from howling. "Tell me! What happened with you two?"
She lost her mind.
Jeff couldn’t stop coughing. Suddenly, he spat out a mouthful of blood and then fainted.
Yvonne was stunned, glancing down at the small pool of blood and then up at Jeff, who was lying motionless on the bed.
Only then did she react. "Call an ambulance!"
An hour later, in the corridor outside the emergency room door.
Yvonne was sitting on a bench, pale and dull.
James, sitting right next to her, held her hands tight and said reassuringly, "It’s not your fault. He’ll be okay."
Hearing this, Yvonne closed her eyes in painful silence. She didn’t mean to yell at Jeff. She just wanted to get to the bottom of what happened years ago.
As a doctor, she couldn’t forgive herself for being selfish at that time.
Just then, the door of the emergency room flew open. And the doctor in a white coat slowly came out from inside.
"Doctor, how is he?" Yvonne hurriedly got up and asked.
The doctor took off his mask and said, "The patient has advanced lung cancer. The cancer cells have spread to the whole body. I’ve done everything I can, but I’m not sure if he can make it."
At that, Yvonne could barely stand up. <How could this happen?
Jeff can’t die.
If he dies, the truth will never come out.>
Thinking of this, Yvonne said, "Please save him."
"I’ll try my best."
After saying that, the doctor strode away.
Yvonne stood rooted to the spot as if she had lost her soul.
Staring at her, James was heartbroken and a little confused at the same time.
James knew Yvonne needed to ask Jeff something, but he didn’t know what it was.
Only when he saw her reaction did he realize that it must be something extremely important to her.
Thinking of this, James slowly went up and took her shoulders. "Don’t worry. I’ll get him to the best doctor. He’ll be fine."
Yvonne was exhausted, both physically and mentally. When she heard James say this, she slowly nodded and then closed her eyes.
This was the only way to go now.
Jeff was still in a coma. James and Yvonne did not stay but left Hammer to keep watch over him.
Soon, they arrived home. Yvonne went straight upstairs in low spirits.
Yvonne was fine when she went out, but she came back with a heavy heart. Seeing this, Mrs. Taylor drew James aside and asked, "What’s wrong with Yvonne?"
In response to her curiosity, James could only shake his head.
After all, he didn’t know much about the details.
He only said Yvonne was tired before he followed her upstairs.
When he entered the room, he did not see Yvonne there.
...
James searched around the bedroom but did not find Yvonne. It was strange. He watched her come upstairs. Where was she now?
His eyes swept over the closed bathroom door. Then he slowly walked over and knocked on the door.
"Yvonne, are you in there?"
Yet there was no response inside.
James paused for a moment and went to open the door but found it was locked from the inside.
James then realized that Yvonne was inside.
It seemed she didn’t want to be disturbed. With that thought, James sighed and turned away.
In the bathroom, Yvonne sat on the toilet, staring vacantly at the wall.
Yvonne couldn’t figure out how things could have turned out this way.
Yvonne thought once she found Jeff, she would be able to find out the truth about the past. But things didn’t go as expected. Jeff was found to have cancer.
She wanted nothing but the truth. That was all.
The more Yvonne thought about it, the more she suffered internally.
Those racy photos of her mother filled Yvonne’s head. Then she could not help recollecting the details of her mother’s diary.
"I’m innocent. I’m wrong," Yvonne’s mother wrote.
Then Yvonne’s mind flitted back to that day when her mother jumped off roofs and lay in blood.
The scene kept sticking in her brain.
Yvonne just couldn’t get it out of her head.
She only felt like her head was going to explode with pain.
She could not bear it anymore. She sank her head into her hands and burst into tears.
Outside the door, James still stood there and checked his watch many times.
Yvonne stayed inside, and James was a little anxious. He went up to knock on the door.
"Yvonne, come out and talk to me, okay?"
James became even more impatient at the lack of response.
"Yvonne, don’t hold it all inside. Come talk to me."
There was still no response from Yvonne. James then turned around to get the key.
Suddenly, the door opened from the inside.
Yvonne came out, her eyes red-rimmed and face tear-stained. She cried just now. James hurried up to her. "Yvonne."
Yvonne looked up at his tense face and said hesitantly, "I’m fine. Don’t worry." She looked calm.
James was still a little uneasy. "You must have your reasons for hiding something from me. But I can’t bear to see you suffer. Talk to me now."
James hated himself for being powerless. He must do something.
Yvonne could feel how worried he was, but he could not offer help this time.
James had done everything he could.
It was time for Yvonne to take care of the rest.
Thinking of this, she said, "I’m really fine."
She obviously did not intend to say it.
James’ hands slowly moved away from her shoulders, then hung at his sides, and squeezed into fists.
"Okay, I won’t ask again. Relax. Hammer is looking after Jeff in the hospital." Hearing this, Yvonne nodded.
"Get some sleep. I’ll call you when there’s news from the hospital."
After James finished, he turned around and walked towards the bedroom despondently.
Yvonne stood there, watching his retreating figure. Tears spilled out of her eyes. "I’m sorry, James. There is something I can’t share with you." She closed her eyes in pain.
For days on end, there was no news about Jeff from the hospital.
Yvonne knew very well in her heart that Jeff probably could not make it.
She had waited too long to find Jeff, a key witness. How could she give up easily? She decided to make a trip to the hospital.
Yvonne arrived and went straight to the intensive care unit where Jeff stayed.
With a sterile suit on and her old I.D. badge in hand, Yvonne fooled all the staff and went inside.
Yvonne was more than familiar with the instruments there.
She observed the data and then went towards Jeff, who was lying on the bed with his eyes tightly closed. Then she said in a cold, pointed tone, "Jeff, I know you can hear me. Listen, you can’t just die like this. You are the only witness who knows the inside story. Wake up now."
"Because of you, my mom killed herself in the prime of her life. Don’t you feel guilty? Open your eyes! Atone for your sin!"
Yvonne said while monitoring his heart rate. Originally, there was no fluctuation, but now his heart started beating faster.
That was exactly what she wanted.
Yvonne continued, "You’re afraid of Grace, aren’t you? I’m crueler than her. If you die, I’ll dig your body out and whip it hard."
Unexpectedly, the alarm went off, which meant that someone found her as an interloper.
Yvonne had to leave immediately.
But Jeff had not yet regained his regular heartbeat. Yvonne was reluctant to leave. She said through her gritted teeth, "Jeff, you heard everything. Open your eyes, or I won’t let you off."
Before she could finish her sentence, the door to the ICU was opened and several staff members in sterile suits rushed in and dragged her out.
It was already half an hour later when James received a call from the police station.
He hurried there and saw Yvonne sitting alone with her head bowed. A few uniformed police officers stood beside her with serious faces.
James’ heart was jumping. When he received the police call, he once thought it was a mistake.
But now he had to believe that it was true.
James walked over with his brows knitted. After checking on Yvonne, he looked at the police officers and asked, "Excuse me, may I ask what’s going on?"
The police officers then looked over and asked, "You’re her family?"
"Yeah, I’m her husband," James answered.
"Well, then, now we’ll explain the situation to you. Your wife entered the ICU without permission. This is a serious breach of the peace."
