Chapter 389: Know Who’s Got Their Back Before You Act
Chapter 389: Know Who’s Got Their Back Before You Act
"What’s on your mind?"
He walked over and put his hand gently on her shoulder.
She paused for a moment before suppressing the uneasiness in her heart. She pretended to be fine and said, "Nothing."
She shook her head, but the tight grip on her hand betrayed the anxiety in her heart.
He saw that, but he did not expose her. Instead, he sat next to her and said, "I promised not to ask, so I won’t ask. However, you promised me that you would no longer worry about it."
As he spoke, he poured her a glass of hot water.
Hearing his words, Yvonne felt a little guilty. She had promised James not to think about it anymore, but sometimes she couldn’t help it.
She paused, reached out to take the glass of water, and held it in her hand. After a moment of silence, she said, "Actually, it’s not that I can’t tell you about it, but I have no idea how to say it. This man holds the key to my mom’s reputation, so I can’t take the risk without knowing the truth."
She looked worried.
He stared at her worried eyes and paused for a moment before saying.
"I know, but believe me. Even if Grace has any sensational secret, she has no time to disclose it at this time."
"Why?"
She was still bewildered.
He sneered, "Have you heard of creating a smoke screen?"
She did not quite understand.
"I have sent people to attack what she cares about the most, so all her energy is now focused on dealing with that matter. Naturally, she doesn’t have the energy bother with this."
Hearing his words, she immediately understood. No wonder he had reassured her earlier. He had a plan and had executed it.
But how did he do it in such a short time?
She suddenly had great admiration for her husband.
Just then, his phone rang. He took it out and glanced at it. Then he smiled at her and said, "Speaking of the devil."
He got up, walked back to his desk, and answered the phone. Knowing it’s Grace on the line, she got up and followed him. "Hello Ms. White. How are things?" He said sarcastically.
Grace was gnashing her teeth with hatred. He’d taken advantage of the fact that they were not prepared, to stab them on their back, yet he was still acting as if nothing had happened.
Grace had the urge to rush over and tear him apart, but when she thought of the current situation, she suppressed her anger.
"Mr. Taylor, if I’m not mistaken, you’re the one who released the news, aren’t you?"
Grace’s question was already expected by James, but he did not admit it. Instead, he pretended to be unaware and said, "Miss White, what are you talking about? I don’t understand."
"You don’t understand? You got your people to spread the news that the White Enterprise has cashflow issues. Do you think I don’t know?"
She snorted.
James pretended that he just got her point, "Ah! So that’s what you are referring to. I thought that’s known to all in the industry? Do I need to spread the truth?"
"You..."
Grace was livid, but she kept her temper in check. "It seems that Mr. Taylor doesn’t intend to let White Enterprise survive."
"Umm ... Miss White, I am afraid you have misunderstood me. I am after all the son-in-law of the Whites, and I have to consult Yvonne first before I can make such decisions."
As James spoke, he gave Yvonne a wink.
...
As she was hearing his conversation, she met his gaze.
It was not difficult for Yvonne to guess what was going on. She was curious how James pulled this off and she couldn’t help but give him the thumbs-up for his negotiation skills.
She could so imagine Grace’s ballistic facial expression.
It was truly enjoyable.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t see it.
Grace, on the other side of town, was about to explode. She could no longer suppress the anger in her heart.
"James Taylor, don’t be too arrogant. Do you think you can break the White Enterprise just by releasing such news? Let me tell you, the White Enterprise has a solid foundation of at least decades. It won’t be defeated so easily."
After that, she hung up.
Hearing the beep from the other side, he put the phone down on the table. He looked up and met Yvonne’s eyes, which were full of doubts. He chuckled and walked over.
"You must be curious about what I did."
She nodded.
He stepped forward, put his arms around her shoulders, walked her to the sofa, sat down on the sofa and said, "The Taylor Group has been blocking the news of the cashflow problem through various channels recently. We even created a faux prosperous front. This is the reason why Grace wants to cooperate with the Taylors. The moment the Taylors work with the Whites officially, all the rumors will automatically be dispelled. Unfortunately, the deal did not work out."
At this point, he deliberately stopped and glanced at her intently.
She looked away with guilt. It was her interference that had caused the White Enterprise to voluntarily give up the opportunity to work with the Taylors.
She thought she got away with it.
But he knew.
He did not reveal his awareness. Instead, he continued, "After losing the chance to cooperate with the Taylor Group, for the White Enterprise to stabilize its position in the industry, it must find a home ground from another perspective. You should know that in the business world, sometimes a groundless rumor can destroy a company. What’s more, the White Enterprise has suffered so much, it is almost down to the bones. I’m afraid that this is the reason why Grace is threatening you."
He looked at her.
She nodded. "Yes, she wants me to join the White Enterprise and announce to public my marital status with the Taylors."
Hearing this, James thought to himself that he was right on!
Grace did have some tricks up her sleeves.
She probably had this in mind when she tried to instigate Yvonne to marry him.
She wanted to make use of the Taylors’ influence to effortlessly dispel the rumors and win over others with their alliance.
However, it was a pity that she did not consider the emotions of the parties involved and had chosen the wrong method.
She hurt the person he loved most.
In that case, there could only be one ending.
He sneered and said, "And that’s exactly what I’m making use of. I’ll give her whatever she fears the most. I’m afraid that the news of the White Enterprise cashflow issue has already spread in the industry."
Yvonne finally understood after he explained.
Rumors were vicious, not to mention in the ever-evolving business world.
Any negative news was disastrous.
Grace was probably too preoccupied trying to manage the disastrous public relations (PR) crisis. The last thing she would do was to add fuel to the fire.
Brant was after all the CEO of the company. Any scandalous news about his deceased wife, would be a heavy blow to his reputation and the company.
...
Such bad PR would totally backfire on the stock market.
Grace would naturally not do such a stupid thing.
Yvonne finally completely relaxed.
"Relieved now?"
James asked.
She nodded and looked at him gratefully.
It was through this incident that she realized how powerful and smart James was.
In the past, she always thought that he was just lucky to inherit the family business.
Now, he had proven that he had gained all this by relying on his own capability.
She had underestimated him.
She felt ashamed of her previous prejudice against him.
"Thank you."
She said from the bottom of her heart.
Hearing her thanks, he frowned and said, "You don’t have to thank me. I just hope that whenever you encounter any difficult problems in the future, you can trust me and think of me first."
He was obviously referring to her distrust.
She nodded in embarrassment.
"Definitely."
She said.
Knowing that Grace will not divulge any scandals, Yvonne felt much more at ease. However, she knew very well that this matter was not over yet because the truth had yet to be disclosed.
The most important thing right now was to find Jeff Reed and get to the bottom of what had happened all those years ago.
Thinking of this, she turned to James and said, "Then... Jeff Reed..."
"I was about to tell you this."
He paused for a moment before continuing, "The men we sent to spy on them have sent back news that Jeff Reed has been missing ever since he was taken away. Now, we can confirm that Grace was the one who took him. However, we still don’t know where he is hiding. But, don’t worry. Our men are still investigating and will find out more. There will be news soon."
She nodded her head.
As long as they could stop Grace from leaking the scandal, they have time to find Jeff.
She only hoped to prove her mother’s innocence in her lifetime.
After taking care of the issue of Grace, Yvonne felt relieved enough to rest in peace for a couple of days.
When she returned home with James that evening, she drank the soup sent by Mrs.
Taylor.
Time flies. In the blink of an eye, it had been almost three months since she and James got married.
Still, there were no signs of pregnancy under the effects of the aphrodisiac soup.
This time, Mrs. Taylor was completely flustered.
On this day, she deliberately pulled James aside and whispered, "James, you and Yvonne have been married for so long, but she still hasn’t gotten pregnant. Have you ever thought about the reason?"
Hearing his mom mention this again, James was extremely annoyed.
"What’s the problem? We’ve only been married for a short period of time. Don’t exaggerate things."
James was about to leave when he was stopped by Mrs. Taylor. "I’m not done yet." He stopped impatiently.
Mrs. Taylors paused for a moment before saying, "I met Mrs. Sutherland of Chasey International a few days ago at the hospital. Her daughter-in-law couldn’t get pregnant for some time. After going for a check-up, they found out she had a fallopian tube block. She was treated and became pregnant in less than half a year. I was wondering if you and Yvonne should go for a check-up."
He couldn’t believe what his mom just said.
"Mom, are you suspecting that one of us have a problem with our bodies?"
Mrs. Taylor felt awkward. "I didn’t mean that. There’s nothing wrong with having a check-up."
