Chapter 446: Chapter 445: IF Line: Did the Bigshot Fight for Favor Today? 14
Mu Tangfeng stared at Onyx in Jiang Xia’s arms and argued his case. "I saw Onyx first, so she should come home with me first."
Jiang Xia hugged the cat and stared at him warily, unwilling to let go. "But you’re the one who made Onyx cry. You were the first one to say she was ugly."
"You’re telling me you didn’t laugh?"
Mu Tangfeng wouldn’t give an inch, and neither would Jiang Xia.
The two went back and forth, starting an argument right there in the hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Jiang could already feel the gossiping stares of many people. A doctor even came over to remind them to be quiet.
Feeling utterly embarrassed, Mrs. Jiang slapped each of them on the forehead. "Alright, no more arguing."
After getting slapped, Jiang Xia and Mu Tangfeng’s previously fierce eyes instantly cleared up. They stared with wide, innocent eyes at Mrs. Jiang.
The Jiang and Mu families were close. Before getting married, Mrs. Jiang and Mrs. Mu had been best friends, so she showed no mercy when it came to smacking her best friend’s son.
The two finally shut up. Mrs. Jiang laid down the law. "You two can just take turns bringing her home. Xiaxia, let Tang Feng take Onyx first today."
Mu Tangfeng’s eyes immediately lit up. "Thank you, Auntie Jiang! You’re the best," he said in a sweet voice.
"Mom~! Are you even my real mom?"
Jiang Xia whined, tugging her hand back and forth pitifully, his eyes full of reluctance.
Mrs. Jiang stared at him coldly. "If you keep arguing, I won’t let you bring the cat home at all. Have you forgotten the stupid thing you did today?"
Hearing this, Jiang Xia immediately and obediently shut his mouth. "Okay, I’ll listen to Mom~"
With that, he reluctantly handed the cat to Mu Tangfeng. Cradling the cat, Mu Tangfeng felt like his life had ascended to a higher plane.
He affectionately rubbed his cheek against the cat’s face. Shi Lan’s feline face was already rather unique, and his rubbing scrunched it up. She let out a slightly displeased "MEOW" and pushed his face away with her paw.
"See? Onyx just loves me. Listen to how cute and soft her meow is. And her little paws feel so nice."
Mu Tangfeng completely misinterpreted her meow and repelling paw, shooting a proud, gloating look at Jiang Xia.
Jiang Xia seethed with jealousy.
"What’s so great about that."
He muttered under his breath, not meaning it at all.
Speechless, Shi Lan gave up and retracted her paw. ’It feels like no matter what I do, Mu Tangfeng will see it as a reward. Forget it. Whatever.’
’I’m just a little kitty. Considering how much money those two have spent on me, what’s a little petting?’
Shi Lan paid him no more mind. Mu Tangfeng, however, continued to cuddle the cat as if she were the rarest treasure.
...
After confirming that Jiang Xia was fine, the group went home.
The Mu Family was waiting for him to get back for dinner. Usually, their work and school schedules were all different, so they mostly ate on their own.
But for the past two months, Mu Tangfeng had been coming home at a very regular time, so Mr. and Mrs. Mu had simply taken to waiting for their son.
Today, however, Mu Tangfeng was half an hour later than usual.
The moment he walked in, Mr. and Mrs. Mu looked at him sternly and cut right to the chase. "Tang Feng, did you get into another fight today?"
Mu Tangfeng, who had been wearing a happy expression while holding the cat, looked puzzled at the question. He hurriedly covered the cat’s ears. "Mom, Dad, don’t say things like that. Am I that kind of person?"
’Onyx is still young. I can’t let her hear about my bad side.’ He hadn’t been in a fight for two months.
’Is fighting as fun as petting a cat?’
Shi Lan was silent. ’Does he really think I haven’t heard about his and Jiang Xia’s reputations as school tyrants?’
The corners of Mr. and Mrs. Mu’s mouths twitched speechlessly. Their son was truly thick-skinned to have the nerve to ask them that.
In the past, whenever he came home late, it was a sure sign something had happened. They had even picked him up from the police station a dozen times, almost becoming regulars.
"Then why are you so late today?"
Mr. Mu asked, while Mrs. Mu called for the butler to set the table for dinner.
Seeing that they had dropped the subject of fighting, Mu Tangfeng relaxed and uncovered the cat’s ears. He couldn’t possibly corrupt his adorable, well-behaved Onyx.
He explained what had happened with Jiang Xia. Upon hearing the story, concern flickered in his parents’ eyes, and they only breathed a sigh of relief after learning he was okay in the end.
Still, their son really had turned over a new leaf these past two months.
With this thought, Mr. and Mrs. Mu looked at the cat in Mu Tangfeng’s arms. They had noticed her the moment he walked in.
Mrs. Mu had seen this cat once before and recognized her as Onyx, the reason for her son’s recent transformation.
Mr. Mu only knew his son was raising a cat somewhere; he hadn’t seen her yet. He had been tied up with work the last time Mrs. Mu went to the school.
After studying her for a moment, he looked at his son with some hesitation. "This cat... is this the one you’re raising?"
Mu Tangfeng nodded excitedly. "Yes, her name is Onyx. Isn’t she cute? Isn’t she beautiful? Better than my sister’s Chinchilla cat, right?"
Hearing this, both Mr. and Mrs. Mu began to question their son’s sense of aesthetics.
The cat their eldest daughter raised was a fine specimen, worth over ten thousand yuan. The one in their son’s arms was just... an ordinary cat, wasn’t it?
Mr. Mu sized up Onyx, finding it hard to agree.
Mrs. Mu, however, saw Onyx as a lucky star after witnessing her effect on their son, so she was seeing the cat through a slightly biased lens.
While Onyx wasn’t much to look at at first glance, she wasn’t ugly upon closer inspection. The fur she’d grown lately was glossy and smooth, and after being washed, it was fluffy and soft. The longer you looked, the better she seemed.
Mrs. Mu nodded with a smile and quickly agreed, "Yes, Onyx is a beautiful little kitty."
"I’ll go to the kitchen right now and have the chef prepare dinner for Onyx."
Onyx was the great hero of their household; she had to be rewarded well.
With that, Mrs. Mu bustled off excitedly. It was rare for her to go to the kitchen personally. Watching his wife’s retreating back, Mr. Mu recalled her praise, which was identical to their son’s, and couldn’t help but question someone’s sense of aesthetics again.
Only this time, the one he was doubting... was himself.
He stared at Onyx for a long time, trying to find something beautiful about her. In the end, however, he just cleared his throat and awkwardly changed the subject. "Go wash your hands and get ready for dinner."
Mu Tangfeng pouted and blocked his father’s way. "Dad, you haven’t complimented Onyx yet."
His Onyx was a vain little cat; otherwise, he wouldn’t have caught her looking at herself in the mirror the first time they met.
Embarrassed, Shi Lan wanted to cover her face. She couldn’t bring herself to look Mr. Mu in the eye and hung her head in shame.
’With the way I look now, there’s no need to force a compliment. Who acts like Mu Tangfeng, anyway?’
Mr. Mu hadn’t expected this from his son. He sized up the cat again and said carefully, "Mm, she is indeed a good cat. She looks very intelligent in the eyes."
"Right? You also think Sis’s Chinchilla is a dumb cat? Not like my Onyx, the smartest cat in the whole world! She doesn’t even splash milk everywhere when she drinks. Even when she’s brought to school for a whole day, she doesn’t make a racket inside the desk..."
Once Mu Tangfeng started, he couldn’t stop praising her, going on and on. Before, when his wife had told him how much their son loved the cat he was raising, Mr. Mu hadn’t thought much of it. But now, seeing this scene with his own eyes, he finally believed Mrs. Mu’s words.
It was truly strange. His son used to avoid cats like the plague, but this time he had taken the initiative to adopt a stray.
Thinking of this, Mr. Mu gave Onyx another curious look. Finally, his gaze landed on that cat face—with a right eye that looked like it had been punched, giving it a slightly weird appearance—and he began to suspect his son’s interest was purely a case of morbid curiosity.
