Chapter 324: Medical Station Tour
Chapter 324: Chapter 324: Medical Station Tour
After asking the classic pregnancy question, Vina began to give the newly arrived medical team a tour of the medical station.
The medical station was quite large, divided into numerous sections: a lounge, a snack area, treatment wards, an equipment and drug dispensary, and more.
As for a cafeteria, it wasn’t practical to hire new male staff just to open a separate one within the medical station, so both females and males ate at the public cafeteria.
After finishing the tour, Vina led them to the living quarters. "The rooms here are all private, and they have various simulated themes. Take a look and see which one you’d like to pick."
’Simulated themes?’
Shi Lan’s interest was piqued. She curiously opened one of the doors and peered inside. She discovered the floor was a lawn and the walls were covered in hyper-realistic natural landscapes. There even seemed to be a breeze, causing virtual trees to sway gently. A bed was placed to one side, making it feel as if it were truly in an outdoor setting.
She stood there, stunned. It was the first time she had ever seen something so magical, and her mouth fell open in surprise.
The other females were just as astonished.
Vina smiled and explained, "If you’re interested, you’re welcome to switch to any empty room whenever you like. The weather on the Border Defense Star is so monotonous—nothing but snow and harsh sun, with no greenery at all. Without these simulated themes, staying here long-term would get incredibly boring and could easily lead to psychological issues."
Life on the front lines might be repetitive and a bit dull, but it was true that whenever the nation developed something good, it was prioritized for the front.
The women nodded in understanding, then couldn’t resist opening the other empty rooms to see what was inside.
There was a dinosaur world, a Mecha world, deep space, a sea of flowers... every imaginable virtual theme was available.
Shi Lan loved them all, but ultimately chose the Mecha world theme.
She chose this room because she had never piloted a Mecha herself. She’d had the good fortune of riding in someone else’s once, but that couldn’t compare to the thrill of experiencing it firsthand.
As it happened, the room offered a simulation. It still felt a bit lacking, though. At least here she didn’t need to expend spiritual power to balance the Mecha; it was more like playing a racing game at an arcade.
Still, Shi Lan indulged her craving for a bit. The room’s decor was a sort of cyberpunk mechanical style, with numerous Mecha models on display. She touched each one, thinking they were all cool. They had a premium texture and felt heavy and substantial when she picked them up.
’Come to think of it, I wonder if He Hanshi has a Mecha. I’ve never seen it.’
The thought lasted only a moment before Shi Lan dismissed it. Medical work on the Border Defense Star was demanding. They had only been in the living quarters for a few minutes when the other Military Doctors departed. Vina, bringing up the rear, said, "Come with me. Let’s get you familiar with the situation so we can aim to have you start treatments tomorrow."
"Okay."
The women had no objections and immediately followed her.
Military Doctors on the Border Defense Star possessed the skills of both a conventional doctor and a spiritual soother. Worried that the newcomers’ conventional medical skills might be lacking, Vina said, "For now, just focus on performing the basic soothing work. Today, you’ll follow me to get familiar with the procedures."
They all nodded again.
As they walked past the medical station’s treatment rooms, Shi Lan saw numerous males lying in beds. Some had wounds from the Insect Clan’s corrosive attacks that hadn’t yet been treated in a Treatment Pod. They couldn’t endure the agony of their spiritual power collapsing, so they had come here for relief first.
Spiritual power collapse was actually quite a painful affair. Depending on its severity, a high-risk collapse could easily trigger a violent rampage, which could be fatal. Even when a collapse wasn’t actively flaring up, the victim’s mind would often be muddled and racked with throbbing pain.
He Hanshi and his men had been like that. But after three years in prison, they had grown accustomed to it, living in a constant state of pain. That’s why Shi Lan hadn’t initially sensed the torment they endured from their spiritual power collapse.
As for a Middle Level spiritual power collapse, the males described it as feeling like ants were gnawing on their brain and limbs. Of course, the pain wasn’t constant. It came in waves, and the urge to scratch an itch deep within one’s very bones, a place that could never be reached, made it all the more unbearable.
A low-level spiritual power collapse was more manageable, akin to a simple migraine that could almost be ignored.
Hearing their pained moans and seeing their wounds, Shi Lan’s expression filled with compassion.
Even though the Treatment Pods were highly effective, the pain from the wounds themselves was still very real.
The other female members of the team standing behind her also looked pale. Having been stationed on the Capital Star, the males they usually treated were in relatively good condition. At the very least, they didn’t have extensive wounds like those inflicted by the Insect Clan.
Seeing this for the first time, they were all stunned and a little frightened.
As an experienced Military Doctor, Vina was unfazed. The Beastmen who had come in today were probably holding back out of consideration for the new females; their injuries were all considered minor. In the past, she had treated wounded soldiers with corrosion that went right down to the bone.
Thankfully, the Beastman constitution was robust. A few more sessions in the Treatment Pod, and they would be good as new.
Noticing the females staring from outside the room, a male who had been crying out from the pain of a Middle-Level spiritual power collapse shamefully bit his lip, not daring to let out another sound.
’Ugh, so humiliating for a male!’
Fortunately, Shi Lan and her team didn’t linger for long. Vina soon led them to the front desk.
For the rest of the time, the women followed her closely, quickly absorbing the Military Doctors’ treatment procedures. Fortunately, they would only be responsible for Basic Healing, and the methods were not much different from what they were used to, so it was all easy to pick up.
However, after Shi Lan slowed down to observe the others, she noticed that everyone’s Basic Healing speed was indeed very slow. Vina was a relatively outstanding S-level female and currently the only one among the Military Doctors.
At her speed, half an hour of treatment could only reduce a patient’s collapse value by 3%.
In contrast, Shi Lan, with her current abilities, could reduce it by over 10% in the same amount of time.
Moreover, after treating a patient for a while, they needed a ten-minute break before they could continue.
Therefore, for them to achieve the same 10% reduction that Shi Lan could, it would take them at least two hours. And from her quick glance earlier, there were only a dozen or so Military Doctors on staff.
Back when the Insect Clan rarely troubled the Border Defense Star, a dozen or so medics would have been perfectly sufficient. After all, once a male was treated, he typically wouldn’t need to return for at least a month.
But now, with the surge in the Insect Clan’s numbers and their new attacks on the Border Defense Star, there was a critical shortage of medical personnel.
Of course, Shi Lan’s team wasn’t the only one. Other medical teams were scheduled to arrive as reinforcements over the next few days.
Half an hour passed, and it was time for lunch on the base.
The males who hadn’t been treated yet immediately sat up in their beds. "Chow time! Doctor, you should go eat too. I’m heading out."
’Anyway, my spiritual power collapse just hurts a little. It’s not like I’m dying. Getting treated a bit later won’t make a difference.’
With that, he casually wiped at his wounds and hurried off to the cafeteria.
The base’s cafeteria had strict meal times, a measure to instill discipline in every soldier. After the designated time, males would no longer be served a proper meal, though an exception was made for females.
The other Military Doctors were used to this sight, but Shi Lan and the other newcomers could only stare with their mouths agape in surprise.
