The saying goes, the transition from cold to warm is the hardest time to endure.

At this moment, Sylvan Cheney leaned against the chair, smoking, with his eyes closed, yet unable to sleep.

There was pain in his wrist, but it was nothing compared to the headache.

On the balcony, a cloud of smoke rose, and the ashtray beside him was already full of cigarette butts. This strong cigarette hit hard, the intense nicotine easily stimulated the nerves.

This stimulation made Sylvan even less sleepy.

He opened his eyes to gaze at the endless sky and tall buildings outside; the night was deep.

He didn’t know what time it was when he stubbed out the cigarette, threw a blanket over himself, and closed his eyes to sleep on the chair.

The lighting in the house was dim, and the balcony was even darker.

Sylvan lay motionless and fell asleep just like that.

In a daze, he had another shallow dream...

In the dream, there was a luxurious villa in the mountain; he sat on the couch in the living room, silently looking at the entrance, until a teenage girl appeared.

The young girl resembled Jasmine Yale, but she looked innocent, carrying the unique baby fat and naïveté of a seventeen or eighteen-year-old.

"Where have you been?"

The girl looked up, startled: "You... when did you come back?"

"This is my home; I come back whenever I want."

"I... I just came back from school. I’m going upstairs to do homework."

"Stop." He sat on the couch, unmoving, his sharp eyes scanning her, "Your homeroom teacher called me."

"Ah... homeroom teacher? What did she say?"

"She said you’ve recently been very close to a tall boy in your class, like an early romance."

"No, the homeroom teacher is wrong; we aren’t close! He’s the sports committee member and not good with academics, so sometimes he asks me about the assignments, and I just help him." The girl explained anxiously.

"Oh? It seems you indeed are quite close to that boy."

"You! You tricked me! How could you!"

"What did I say before, hmm?"

"How am I supposed to remember everything you say? You say so much, am I meant to remember it all? You’re not an exam answer, why should I remember your words?" The girl was angry, standing at the foot of the staircase, glaring at him.

"I rarely come back, and this is how you talk to me?" He looked at her, his expression unchanged, but a shadow of gloominess in his eyes.

"You rarely come back just to trick me, interrogate me, and how are you any better? It’s always like this. Why don’t you ask how my exams went or if I’m eating well at school."

"Your exam results, do I need to ask?" He sneered, full of disdain.

"No need, so don’t meddle in my school affairs either!" Her voice rose, shouting at him.

"You’ve grown bold, do you think just because you’ve lived in my house for ten years, I won’t kick you out? Hmm?"

"What are you trying to say? You come back and act like this, finding it interesting? Is bullying a little girl fun for you?" Her voice carried a sob, looking truly upset at his words, yet still obliged to go along with his threats.

"Little girl... do you still consider yourself one? You’re an adult now, capable of independence, it seems like I no longer need to support you."

"Who asked you to support me? Did you come back this time just to drive me away?" She tightened her grip on her backpack, looking at him, "I have dignity too, I don’t need you to drive me away, I’ll leave on my own."
