Farming After the End of the World
Chapter 331: A Sense of Oppression
Chapter 331: Chapter 331: A Sense of Oppression
’Nine of them?’
Recalling the first time the Head Wolf had led a pack to her territory, Xiaqing paused for two seconds before asking, "Are there any injured or sick ones in the Wolf Group?"
"No," Hu Zifeng answered with certainty, emphasizing, "They’re all very strong. Their combat power is formidable."
Xiaqing replied, "Let them come. Don’t intercept them."
Hu Zifeng, who was in charge of protecting the Third Territory, was worried. "The Wolf Group’s offensive capabilities are extremely high. Can you handle them? Should I request permission from Brother Luo to bring two teams over?"
Even through the camera, the sight of the Wolf Group moving through the dense Evolution Forest in the rain gave Hu Zifeng an intense feeling of pressure. Although they hadn’t clashed head-on, Hu Zifeng knew very well that his ten-man squad was no match for these wolves.
The Evolution Cat, Little Fifth, peeked its small, furry head out from inside Hu Zifeng’s Protective Suit. Its round, black eyes stared at the Wolf Group on the camera feed. Afraid the kitten would be scared, Hu Zifeng gently scratched its tiny chin.
If Hu Zifeng and his men came over, armed and ready, the Wolf Group might be provoked into a fight. Xiaqing directly told Hu Zifeng the purpose of their visit. "Yesterday, the Broken Waist Wolf came to trade some things with me. Because the items are quite bulky, it needs a few more wolves to carry them away. They’re just here to move things."
’What could the Wolf Group have traded with Xiaqing that requires so many Evolutionary Wolves to transport?’ Hu Zifeng racked his brain. He figured the only thing in the Third Territory with that kind of weight was the micro-tiller.
’Does the Wolf Group need a micro-tiller? Obviously not.’ He suppressed his curiosity and replied, "Alright. Contact me immediately if anything happens. I’ll be on standby here."
After hanging up, Xiaqing filled a bucket with water and went home. She saw the Head Wolf still soaking in the bathtub, not shivering or showing any signs of enduring great pain.
’Has the medicine’s effect weakened so much?’
"Queen, is the water cold? Does it need to be reheated?" Xiaqing took off her protective gloves and dipped her hand into the tub for a few seconds. She didn’t feel the tingling numbness of the medicine seeping into her skin.
Theoretically, it shouldn’t be completely ineffective; she probably just hadn’t soaked her hand long enough. But Xiaqing didn’t dare to keep it in for longer. First, Zhang San had set a strict time limit for the medicinal bath. Second, the Head Wolf was staring at her fingers, looking a bit displeased.
’I have to say, with her head all wet, the Head Wolf doesn’t look majestic at all—in fact, she looks pretty comical.’ Xiaqing pulled her hand back and said with a straight face, "The water temperature is perfect. Queen, you should get out in another twenty minutes. Soaking in this medicine for too long isn’t good for you."
Xiaqing went into the kitchen and started making breakfast.
The Sick Wolf still had meat congee, while she had last night’s bone and radish soup with two mixed-grain steamed buns. With the Yi Stone Refrigerator that could preserve food, Xiaqing could now cook two meals at once and steam enough buns to last for days, saving her a lot of trouble.
After putting the congee on to cook, Xiaqing went to check on the wooden door she had left under the eaves.
She hadn’t noticed it before, but one look gave her a shock. On the wooden door, which she had just coated with clear varnish last night, were two muddy Wolf Claw prints, stamped there at some unknown time.
Xiaqing didn’t even have to guess which wolf had done it. Of the three wolves, only one was interested in the wooden door.
’Why would the Broken Waist Wolf leave its paw prints on the door? To mark its territory?’
Xiaqing fetched the clear varnish and reapplied a coat over the damaged section with the claw prints. Then she called the Sick Wolf over. "Broken Waist is heading for our territory with a pack of wolves. Second, you have to stand by my side later and give me some courage."
Facing nine Evolutionary Wolves at once, even though she knew one of them, still made Xiaqing’s heart pound with fear.
After she finished speaking, Xiaqing saw the Sick Wolf’s ears twitch as it looked out toward the courtyard.
Xiaqing had long since discovered that the Sick Wolf had excellent hearing. ’Does this movement mean the Wolf Group is coming?’ Taking a deep breath, Xiaqing took out her phone and opened the surveillance feed from the High Slope camera.
Half a minute later, the Broken Waist Wolf, wearing its Protective Suit, was the first to appear on the monitor. It was followed by gray, black, brown, and dark-brown wolves, appearing one after another on the screen. Even while just traveling, this Wolf Group maintained a formation that was ready for both attack and defense.
The camera detected the unfamiliar moving intruders one by one, sending repeated alerts to her phone. Xiaqing’s heart trembled with each warning sound.
This was the Evolution Wolf Group that had effortlessly wiped out an entire combat team last year. Damn, the pressure was intense!
’Damn it, they’re just here to move a wooden door! Is it necessary to make such a big show of it? This is terrifying.’
Huh?
Just as she was feeling tense, Xiaqing saw the brownish-gray Evolutionary Wolf at the back of the pack, leaping and bounding all over the place. Half of her anxiety vanished.
’Well, well, if it isn’t broken leg wolf. Long time no see.’
The Wolf Group didn’t even use the stone slab bridge to cross the river; they just leaped over it. They cleared the four-to-five-meter-wide expanse of water in a single bound. Each wolf’s movements were so effortless and cool that Xiaqing watched with envy.
Then, Xiaqing saw her companion, Sheep Leader, go forward to greet them. It sniffed the Broken Waist Wolf, and the Broken Waist Wolf sniffed back. It then casually blended into the Wolf Group. The whole scene was utterly surreal.
The Sick Wolf nudged Xiaqing’s leg, then ran out into the rain to welcome its companions. At that, Xiaqing’s nervousness completely disappeared.
She checked the time, went inside, and conferred with the Head Wolf. "Queen, you should get out now. Your subordinates will be here any second."
Seeing that it didn’t move, Xiaqing put on a stern face and urged again, "You can’t soak in this medicinal water for too long, or it will harm your body. Get out."
The Head Wolf stared at Xiaqing for two seconds, then leaped directly out of the bathtub and looked up at her.
"Okay, right away." Xiaqing used heated, filtered water to rinse the medicinal liquid from its fur. "Alright, Queen, give yourself a good shake. Then I’ll dry you off and brush your fur."
The Head Wolf did as she said, vigorously shaking its body and head to fling off the water droplets.
Watching this, Xiaqing finally confirmed that this wolf’s tolerance for pain was even greater than the Sick Wolf’s. After soaking for so long, it acted as if nothing was wrong. "Queen, all your subordinates are here. Shall we go out?"
But as soon as the Head Wolf took a step, Xiaqing realized she had overestimated it. The pain made its movements uncoordinated. No wonder it had just leaped out of the tub earlier.
The Head Wolf was very proud, so Xiaqing didn’t dare to carry it out directly. She just followed it outside.
The Wolf Group had already arrived. However, the Broken Waist Wolf had left the other wolves outside the courtyard, bringing only the broken leg wolf inside. It was currently washing its feet under the eaves.
"Long time no see, broken leg," Xiaqing said, turning her attention from the ferociously wild Wolf Group to greet the broken leg wolf.
The broken leg wolf, which had been splashing in the water with the Broken Waist Wolf, got so excited upon hearing Xiaqing greet it that it kicked the water basin over. The startled Wolf Group outside the courtyard immediately assumed attack stances, baring their fangs.
Xiaqing was speechless.
"GRRR—"
The Head Wolf let out a stern, low growl. The broken leg wolf immediately behaved, lowering its head and standing perfectly still, not daring to move. The Wolf Group outside also retracted their fangs and stood quietly.
The Broken Waist Wolf finished washing its paws, wiped them on the dry grass, and walked over to exchange sniffs with the Head Wolf. Then, the Head Wolf lay down on the dry grass under the eaves to rest.
The Broken Waist Wolf walked up to Xiaqing and lifted its head, gesturing for her to check the pocket on its suit.
Xiaqing grew excited when she saw the bulging pocket on the Broken Waist Wolf’s Protective Suit.
