Farming After the End of the World
Chapter 308: Green Light Soybeans
Chapter 308: Chapter 308: Green Light Soybeans
Harmful Element-susceptible plants were those that had no resistance to the Harmful Element. When exposed to an atmosphere containing the Harmful Element, the plant’s Harmful Element content would increase, causing it to become a Red Light or Qiang Evolved plant variety.
After the great evolution of life on Blue Star, vegetables like carrots, cabbages, and lilies evolved into Harmful Element-susceptible plants, effectively disappearing from the human diet.
Xiaqing was searching for a successfully evolved, non-susceptible carrot variety. "I was thinking that some Lords might have discovered a non-susceptible, evolved carrot in their territories."
Assistant Liu was an outstanding customer service representative. Their voice, full of warmth and understanding, was very pleasant to hear. "Like you, Miss Xia, I hope we can discover this kind of evolved carrot, but reality is often disappointing. The reason our territory spent so many points building a laboratory was to quickly cultivate a carrot that could be grown in a normal atmospheric environment."
When Xiaqing didn’t respond, Little Liu stated the trade price directly. "Miss Xia, according to statistics, the hatching rate for Green Light Eggs is 70%, and the survival rate for the hatched chicks is also about 70%. So, by a combined calculation, it takes two eggs to raise one chicken. Can we trade one pound of carrots for two eggs?"
Xiaqing had Yi Stones and could create the Harmful Element-free environment needed for the susceptible carrots to grow, but she didn’t have enough Yi Stones to use them that way.
"Assistant Liu, I want to trade for a carrot variety that I can plant in my territory. Your carrots don’t meet my needs."
Assistant Liu replied politely, "Miss Xia, if these were carrots that could be planted directly in a territory, they wouldn’t be this price."
Xiaqing also replied politely, "I understand. But at 500 points per pound, trading for Green Light food that can only be eaten as a vegetable is still too extravagant for me. I’m sorry."
Seeing the deal was about to fall through, Assistant Liu switched to offering points. "Could we use points to purchase two Green Light Eggs at a price of 750 points each?"
Xiaqing had just refused Tang Huai, so of course she wasn’t going to agree to a trade with No. 9 Territory now. "Sorry, I only want to trade for Green Light Soybeans and Green Light carrot seeds. And I need to personally inspect the quality of the Green Light Soybeans."
Xiaqing had no desire to trade for a pile of Iron Soybeans that couldn’t be steamed soft, boiled tender, pounded flat, or stir-fried open.
Seeing that Xiaqing had made up her mind, Assistant Liu could only offer the supplies she wanted. "Our Green Light Soybeans will take half a month to deliver. Based on the trade price of 20 points per Green Light Seed, can we trade 70 Green Light Soybeans for your two eggs?"
Not everyone was as generous as her idol, Zhang San, who would trade high-quality seeds by the pound. This was the standard price for Green Light Seeds, so Xiaqing agreed. "In half a month, I should have over a dozen eggs. Can I trade for more Green Light Soybeans?"
"I need to request approval. Please wait a moment, Miss Xia."
While Assistant Liu went to consult whoever they needed to, not a single person spoke in the Lord channel. Everyone was waiting for the outcome of this trade.
Three minutes later, Assistant Liu finally responded. "Green Light Seeds don’t have a high germination rate, and some are lost during the Harmful Rains. I completely understand why you’d want to trade for more seeds, Miss Xia, but our own supply is limited. Therefore, the most we can trade you is 350 seeds."
seeds was already more than Xiaqing had expected. She thanked them sincerely.
After finalizing the trade, before Xiaqing could even get up from the ground, she received a call from Zhang San. "Xiaqing, the day before the trade, I’ll give you ten eggs. You use those eggs to trade with No. 9 Territory for the seeds."
Xiaqing’s heart skipped a beat. "Brother San, is there something wrong with the eggs my chickens are laying?"
After her chicken laid its first egg, Xiaqing had used her Yi Element Detector to test it. She had confirmed the Yi Element content was only two parts per ten thousand and hadn’t seen any problem.
Zhang San replied lazily, "The chickens you’re raising are doing well. The eggs have higher levels of four trace elements beneficial to the human body than mine do, and they taste better."
’The only factor that could make her chickens better than Zhang San’s was the Pollution-free Spring Water. It seems that until I reveal the secret of the spring, I can’t publicly trade anything that’s been exposed to it—not the crops irrigated with it, not the animals that drink it, and not even their eggs or offspring.’
Zhang San didn’t ask why Xiaqing’s eggs were higher quality, so Xiaqing didn’t say anything, only sincerely thanking her idol for his righteous help. "Okay, thanks, Brother San."
Zhang San, in a good mood, proposed an exchange. "Just in case, from now on, whenever you trade eggs with someone, get them from me."
"Understood. Thanks, Brother San." ’This trade is a win-win. My idol gets to eat better-tasting eggs, and I get to protect the secret that the animals in my territory are better quality than those in other territories.’ After settling the matter of the eggs, Xiaqing brought up the cameras. "Brother San, could you spare another camera for me? I’ve realized four aren’t enough."
Xiaqing currently had a total of four cameras installed in her territory: one on the Big Chuntun Tree on the High Slope, one at each of the east and west ends of the farmland south of the reservoir, and one at home.
After Da Ya left, Xiaqing had checked the surveillance feed on her phone and realized that the camera on the Big Chuntun Tree was installed too far north, failing to cover the entire low-slope greenhouse. If she moved the camera from the Big Chuntun Tree to the south of the high-slope greenhouse, she wouldn’t be able to monitor the Green Light Fruit Garden and the Northern Isolation Zone.
That was why Xiaqing wanted to trade for another camera from Zhang San to install near the low-slope greenhouse. The low-slope greenhouse contained her pollution-free spring, her territory’s most important asset and a key area that needed protection.
Zhang San’s territory already had a surveillance system and dedicated personnel for protection, so he didn’t care much about this batch of new-material cameras and agreed immediately. "Sure. I’ll have Ji Li bring it to you later."
"Thanks, Brother San." After hanging up, Xiaqing turned to look at Sheep Leader lying beside her, and her mouth couldn’t help but water. ’Sheep Leader has been drinking the spring water all this time. Its meat must be much more delicious than an ordinary Green Light Sheep...’
Lying nearby, Sheep Leader keenly sensed something was off with Xiaqing’s gaze. It narrowed its eyes and jumped up, ready to continue their fight.
Having already tested her shoulder muscles and confirmed they were in better shape than before her bath, Xiaqing didn’t want to fight. She stood up, about to head home, when she heard a noise from the High Slope to the north of her territory. Xiaqing pulled out her phone and opened the feed from the High Slope camera.
The High Slope camera was installed on the Green Light Big Chuntun Tree, 250 meters from the Northern Isolation Zone, at a height of five meters. Its location was well-hidden, and the camera itself was camouflaged. A non-Visual Evolver standing at the isolation zone would be unable to spot the camera without carefully searching with binoculars.
Xiaqing swiveled the camera using her phone and quickly found Tang Huai standing at the isolation zone with his hands in his pockets, kicking a tree repeatedly.
’Looks like Tang Huai really does need to see me about something.’
