Chapter 267: Chapter 267: The Possessed Weasel and the Evolutionary Eagle

"I’m worried about that too." Xiaqing and Qi Fu were on the same page.

The insecticides used after the Natural Disaster were all biological agents, each one designed to counter a specific pest. The special insecticide from No. 9 Territory was effective against all lepidopteran insects, which meant it might be a chemical agent. Its toxicity would definitely be greater than a specialized insecticide.

If the insects were killed, would that lead to the mass death of the birds that eat them, triggering a terrifying chain reaction?

Xiaqing worked so hard at farming to eat well and live a stable life, so of course, she had to be extremely cautious when using chemicals. Even when she traded for insecticide from Zhang San, she would always ask for clear details.

Zhang San was much more reliable than Li Si in this regard. The soil insecticide Xiaqing had traded for from Territory Land No. 7 a while back had been specially formulated by the planting specialists there. They had tested the types of insect eggs in their territory’s soil and created a targeted insecticide that could kill most of the pests and eggs, though it couldn’t guarantee the eradication of all species.

That was the kind of medicine one could use with peace of mind.

Since they were allies, Xiaqing was direct with Qi Fu. "Tonight, Brother Qi, find a chance to ask Brother San. I sprayed the specialized insecticide I got from him in my greenhouse, and it’s already wiped out the corn borers."

Hearing Xiaqing’s frankness, Qi Fu felt much more at ease. "Is that the same insecticide Mr. Luo traded Yellow Light Deer meat to Brother San for? I was planning to trade for some after this harvest, but I guess I was too late."

"No, it’s one Brother San hasn’t mentioned on the Lord channel. The one Brother Luo traded for was a soil insecticide. I also traded for a few kilograms and have already used it in my fields. That’s why I haven’t found many leaf-miner moths or slug caterpillar moths in my farmland." After using the soil insecticide and discovering the corn borers, Xiaqing had specifically called her idol to ask for advice and traded for the specialized insecticide.

Thanks to Xiaqing’s incredible proactiveness—never procrastinating and acting on her thoughts immediately—she was ahead of the pest infestation this time. The crops in her greenhouse wouldn’t suffer any losses from it.

After bagging the pine cones from the roof and putting them in the warehouse, Xiaqing mixed up some chicken feed, intending to lure the chickens into the coop and lock them in. But the Green Light Chickens were all full from eating insects and had no interest in the feed.

Resigned, Xiaqing had no choice but to grab a stick, jump into the chicken run, and start herding the chickens toward the coop. The leading Black Feathered Rooster was defiant. It fluffed up its feathers, flapped its wings, and leaped up to attack Xiaqing.

Seeing such a small thing dare to jump up and challenge its authority, Sheep Leader, who was right behind Xiaqing, immediately charged forward. A chicken and a sheep began a chase inside the chicken run. Of course, it was Sheep Leader chasing and the Black Feathered Rooster running.

After Xiaqing herded the rest of the chickens into the coop, the Black Feathered Rooster also flapped its wings, trying to get back to the main flock, but Xiaqing snatched it by the neck.

"Leader, you truly are the lead sheep of our territory. Well done. If you hadn’t helped, I wouldn’t have been able to catch this chicken." Xiaqing first genuinely praised Sheep Leader for stepping up, then grabbed the Black Feathered Rooster’s wings and pointed at its pitch-black head, viciously scolding it.

"Let me tell you something. I’ve got five roosters in my territory, and at most, only two will live to see next spring. If you don’t learn your place, you’ll be the first one to get your neck slit and bled out!"

After speaking, Xiaqing tossed the gleaming black rooster into the coop. After tightly shutting the coop’s window, she mused to Sheep Leader, "This chicken is over five jin, big enough to be slaughtered for meat. We can use its feathers to make a duster, and the smaller feathers can be saved to make a cushion for you, Leader."

Once the chickens were secured, Xiaqing reminded the Broken Waist Wolf and the Sick Wolf in the sheep pen, "I’m going to be spraying the insecticide soon. If you two don’t want to be locked in the sheep pen, go wait in the living room. I’m going to let the Queen know, and I’ll be right back. Leader, you go rest inside too."

As Xiaqing headed out, she noticed Sheep Leader had followed her. "You’re not full, Leader? Want to go eat some pasture grass? I’ll cut two armfuls and bring it back later. You can just wait at home."

Sheep Leader narrowed its eyes and continued to follow. Xiaqing didn’t try to persuade it further. The two of them, person and sheep, walked to the riverbank. Sheep Leader changed direction and went up the High Slope, while Xiaqing followed the valley between the Third Territory and Territory No. 4, heading north toward the abandoned cave in Zone 3.

Just as she reached the edge of the quarantine belt, Xiaqing heard a noise from the east and immediately ducked behind a tree to observe.

A single glance was enough to leave Xiaqing stunned by the bizarre scene before her.

About a hundred meters away, under the buffer shrubs of Territory No. 4, crouched an Evolved Wild Rabbit with the exact same stunned expression as Xiaqing.

Four or five meters in front of the rabbit, on the quarantine belt, was a Weasel that was leaping, tumbling, and performing all sorts of movements no respectable weasel would ever make. It looked as if it were possessed.

Xiaqing watched for a moment and understood, but the Evolved Wild Rabbit didn’t. It just kept crouching there, staring with its big rabbit eyes.

The more the tumbling, convulsing Weasel thrashed about, the closer it got to the rabbit. When it was only a meter away, the Weasel suddenly lunged forward and bit down on the Evolved Wild Rabbit’s neck, capturing prey more than twice its size.

The scene was so brilliant that Xiaqing felt like applauding this Plucking Weasel. She never expected it had such a skill. ’The Head Wolf’s pack truly has no weaklings,’ she thought.

But Xiaqing didn’t dare, afraid that she might startle the Weasel and get sprayed with its noxious gas.

The Weasel quickly began dragging its captured rabbit toward the Evolution Forest on Mountain No. 49. But just as it reached the middle of the fifty-meter-wide quarantine belt, a dark spot on the ground began to expand rapidly. Above, an Evolutionary Eagle folded its wings and dove, its shadow engulfing both the Weasel and the rabbit.

The Evolutionary Eagle’s target was precisely the Evolved Wild Rabbit being dragged by the Weasel!

An Evolved Weasel and an Evolutionary Eagle were not in the same weight class at all. Unwilling to lose its prey, the Weasel grew frantic. It dropped the rabbit and let out a desperate, rapid shriek toward the large tree where Xiaqing was hiding.

"KAK! KAK KAK!"

Xiaqing, who hadn’t intended to interfere in a fight over food between animals, immediately revealed herself from behind the tree upon receiving the Weasel’s cry for help. She raised her hand and fired a shot.

"BANG!"

The diving Evolutionary Eagle had no time to dodge. After being hit by the bullet, it flapped twice in the air and fell.

The crisis was averted. The Weasel dragged the rabbit and ran into the Evolution Forest on Mountain No. 49.

As Xiaqing walked toward the floundering Evolutionary Eagle, Tang Huai’s voice came through the walkie-talkie she carried. "Third Territory, Xiaqing, what’s the situation?"

Xiaqing’s reply wasn’t just for Tang Huai, but also to inform the Danger Investigation Team. "An Evolutionary Eagle attacked my animal companion. I shot it down."

Tang Huai immediately asked, "Which animal companion? The sheep or the squirrel?"

Before Xiaqing could reply, the voice of Lord No. 8, Xin Yu, unexpectedly crackled over the Lord channel. "Xiaqing, is the Evolutionary Eagle you shot down dead?"

Xiaqing raised an eyebrow and pressed the button. "No, but I broke one of its wings. Is this your tamed beast? I don’t see a leg band on it."

Tamed birds usually wore leg bands, which were engraved with information about their ownership.
