Farming After the End of the World

Chapter 200: Chapter 200: Lord No. 8 Goes Online
’Does this thing want to fight?’ Xiaqing drew her long knife and gripped it in her hand. She had never actually fought a wolf before; this would be good practice.
Although this wolf was formidable, Xiaqing wasn’t afraid in the slightest. She believed this pack wouldn’t attack her viciously until the Sick Wolf and the one with the broken waist had recovered. Even if this reckless one with the broken leg acted out, the injured Brain Domain Evolution Wolf lying at the cave entrance and the Head Wolf perched on top would stop it.
The broken-leg wolf didn’t need to be stopped by the others. Although Xiaqing had taken a fighting stance, it didn’t engage her. It just ran a few circles around her before continuing to tear around the valley, frolicking wildly. Wherever it passed, stones were sent flying, tree bark was shredded, and snakes, insects, and birds scattered in terror.
The claw marks the broken-leg wolf left on the tree trunks were identical to the ones left by a wolf with formidable combat prowess when the Wind and Cloud Team was wiped out by this pack last year.
So, this broken-legged fellow was one of the main attackers in the siege against the Wind and Cloud Team last year.
Amidst the chaos, Xiaqing sighed and raised her voice slightly. "Your Majesty, can you fucking control this maniac? If it keeps this up, the humans outside will find you, and you won’t be able to stay here anymore."
The Head Wolf squatting on top of the cave stood up, leaped forward to intercept the crazed brown-gray Evolutionary Wolf, and pinned it under its paw.
’Ho... ly... shit...’
’That skill, that Speed... Truly worthy of being the pack’s leader.’ Xiaqing felt she was no match.
The brown-gray Evolutionary Wolf rolled over, exposing its softest part—its belly—and wriggled and rubbed itself under the Head Wolf’s paw. Its every movement, every strand of flying fur, radiated excitement.
Two more wolves emerged from the cave to join the celebration. The four of them chased and played by the pond, but they were all restrained and didn’t make too much of a commotion.
Xiaqing took out her phone and called Hu Zifeng. "Captain Hu, the chaos in the Zone Three Valley is under control... Yes, the Evolutionary Wolf with the injured hind leg has recovered. It’s just a little excited now that the anesthetic has worn off... Understood. Thank you for your trouble, Captain Hu."
As Xiaqing spoke on the phone, her gaze was fixed on the camera on a large tree not far from the cave entrance.
The injured Brain Domain Evolution Wolf lying at the cave entrance glanced at Xiaqing, then at the tree she was staring at, a thoughtful look on its face.
After hanging up, Xiaqing noticed the Broken Waist Wolf on the ground was watching her. She pointed to the boundaries of the valley and explained to it, "This valley, and the cave behind it, you can use them. But you can’t be seen by the people outside..."
Xiaqing pointed toward the quarantine zone outside the valley, gesturing emphatically as she warned, "You can’t be discovered by the humans out there. They have weapons. They can tranquilize, capture, and kill you and all the others."
She chose to communicate with this wolf because she had discovered it understood human language better than the others. This was perhaps because it had spent a longer time recovering in the Third Territory, and she often spoke to it.
The Brain Domain Evolution Wolf looked in the direction Xiaqing was pointing, then turned to look at its companions. Judging by its eyes, it seemed to have understood.
Xiaqing pointed to the thick wooden board with pictures posted on it inside the cave and instructed it, "I need these two types of medicinal herbs. I need the roots, too. Dig them out of the ground and give them to me. Like this."
Xiaqing then used her hands to dig up a whole plant from the nearby slope to show the intelligent wolf. "Give them to me in exchange for medicine to save your companions."
The injured Brain Domain Evolution Wolf slowly got to its feet and moved to a plant. With its waist Protective Equipment shortened, it could move a bit faster. It dug twice with its front paws, unearthed the plant’s roots, and carried it back to Xiaqing.
"Yes, just like that." ’Communicating with a smart one really saves effort.’ Xiaqing took the plant from its mouth, ruffled the fur on the Brain Domain Evolution Wolf’s clever head, and walked into the cave. She pointed at a picture on the board showing the mature stage of an herb that grew among rocks. "I need it to look like this."
As for the herb that grew in the water, Xiaqing felt it was too risky to ask the Wolf Group to retrieve it.
As the Brain Domain Evolution Wolf stared at the picture, behind the camera, Chen Cheng said with conviction, "Boss, I’d bet anything it totally understood that."
Hu Zifeng was petting a small kitten cradled in his hands. He held it up to the screen. "See that? When our Old Wu grows up, don’t go play in the Zone Three Valley. There are wolves there."
Chen Cheng was itching to get his hands on it. "Boss, your hands must be tired from holding it for so long. How about I hold it for a while?"
"Get lost!" Hu Zifeng scooted to the side, determined not to let the guy’s stinking hands touch his sweet-smelling little kitten. He failed to notice that the little white-booted kitten cradled in his palms was staring at the screen with its big, round, glistening gray eyes.
After pacifying the Wolf Group in the valley, Xiaqing turned and walked out along the riverbed.
Every one of her steps was steady and composed.
This pack of wolves wouldn’t attack her now. But later?
’Who knew?’
If they became enemies, she would fight. If they became allies, they would cooperate for mutual benefit. She couldn’t even place absolute trust in humans, who were her own species and spoke her language, let alone a pack of Evolved Fierce Beasts from the Evolution Forest that couldn’t speak and were of a different species.
As she exited the valley and crossed the quarantine zone, Xiaqing heard familiar footsteps from a distance on the eastern slope and stopped in her tracks.
Tan Junjie was leading the patrol team along the base of the slope by the quarantine zone of Territory No. 4’s Northern side. He saw Xiaqing standing on the quarantine line and gave her a slight nod.
Su Ming waved a cheerful greeting. "Sister Qing!"
Xiaqing explained to the patrol team, "I was on Mountain No. 49 looking for supplies. I already cleared it with the No.1 Territory."
The Evolution Forest Area north of the Third Territory’s quarantine zone was the Green Dragon Team’s field training base. The Green Dragon Team had already made a public announcement and put up signs prohibiting anyone outside their team from entering. Although the Green Dragon Team hadn’t fenced off the mountain, no one dared to trespass.
Because if you were photographed trespassing, you would have to compensate the Green Dragon Team with at least four thousand points. And the maximum? That would depend on how much damage your trespassing caused the Green Dragon Team.
Tan Junjie nodded and reminded Xiaqing, "Be careful."
"Understood. Thanks, Captain Tan."
After the patrol team passed, Xiaqing used her keen hearing to overhear Yuan Rui, the team member with an evolved sense of smell, report in a low voice to Tan Junjie, "Xiaqing has the scent of wolves on her."
The fact that there were wolves in Xiaqing’s territory couldn’t be hidden from the patrol team that guarded Territories One through Ten twenty-four hours a day.
Both Xiaqing and Luo Pei had given the patrol team a heads-up. Xiaqing had assured Tan Junjie that the wolf recovering in her territory would never attack other territories, so Tan Junjie turned a blind eye and didn’t report it up the chain of command.
Xiaqing wasn’t afraid of the wolves in the Third Territory being exposed now. The Old Wolf in her territory, which was on the verge of dying from sickness, had already been discovered by Zhang Yong, Xu Juan, and the Su Feng Team.
If anyone other than the patrol team detected the scent of wolves, Xiaqing would just bring the matter out into the open. A single, sick, slow-moving Old Wolf wouldn’t cause a major stir. At most, Zhao Ze would make a big fuss about it, and Tang Huai would make a few sarcastic remarks.
Tan Junjie remained silent. Xiaqing heard Su Ming mutter under his breath, "The wolf recovering in the Third Territory still isn’t better?"
Hu Zi replied, "What’s so strange about that? The Evolved Sea Eagle recovering in the No. 8 Territory isn’t better either, is it?"
Hearing them mention it, Xiaqing was reminded that Lord No.8, Xin Yu, was raising an evolved bird of prey. If the Evolved Sea Eagle didn’t leave after its injuries healed, Xiaqing would have to give the Lord of Territory No. 8 a heads-up.
The fish, poultry, and even the Sheep Leader in the Third Territory were all on the Evolved Sea Eagle’s menu. If the Evolved Sea Eagle from No. 8 Territory flew to the Third Territory to hunt, Xiaqing would absolutely shoot it down. Therefore, she would have to ask the Lord of Territory No. 8 to keep her Evolutionary Animal in check.
Before Xiaqing could contact the Lord of Territory No. 8, Xin Yu suddenly spoke up during the lord exchange period after the evening agricultural broadcast. "Is the Lord of Territory No. 1 present? This is Xin Yu, the Lord of Territory No. 8."
