Farming After the End of the World
Chapter 194: A Refreshed Understanding
Chapter 194: Chapter 194: A Refreshed Understanding
At the security door stood a rooster with magnificent plumage, far more beautiful than the one the Weasel was plucking.
When Xiaqing came out, the Head Wolf glanced at her and pressed its paw down on the Sick Wolf’s paw.
"Thank you for the chicken, Queen. You’ve worked hard. Your companion is feeling much better after taking the medicine. At dawn, I’ll take it and the two wolves from the cave to that other territory for a check-up." Xiaqing gestured toward the wolf’s lower back. "The same place I took the wolf with the injured back for its surgery."
After she finished speaking, Xiaqing picked up the pheasant and showered the Head Wolf with praise before going back inside to message Ji Li. Without plucking a single one of the chicken’s beautiful tail feathers, she sealed it up and took it to the North Isolation Zone of No.3 Territory.
The people from Territory Land No. 7 were always punctual. Ji Li and a man Xiaqing had never seen before were already waiting with four large boxes. Xiaqing greeted Ji Li warmly, "Brother Ji, long time no see."
Ji Li nodded and asked Xiaqing, "This is the equipment you wanted. Do you know how to install it? If not, I’ll have Da Ya help you. He’s in charge of food storage in our territory and is an expert in this area."
Meeting an expert, Xiaqing naturally wouldn’t pass up the chance to learn. "I’ve never installed this before. I’ll have to trouble you, Brother Ya."
Da Ya nodded.
Because he was wearing a Protective Mask, Xiaqing couldn’t see his face clearly. She could only tell that he was a short, middle-aged man—or perhaps not yet middle-aged. These days, you couldn’t simply judge age by appearance.
Ji Li took the sealed pheasant and handed Xiaqing a small packet of medicine. "This is an anesthetic. Our Lord wants you to come over at 9:45. Do you need any help?"
Xiaqing nodded. "Please, Brother Ji, send someone to the abandoned cave at the Wild Boar Breeding Center at 9:20 to help me carry the wolves."
Although Xiaqing was strong, the path was difficult. She couldn’t carry three wolves on a wooden board by herself and keep it steady.
After Ji Li left with the pheasant, Xiaqing picked up two of the boxes he had brought and led the way. "Brother Ya, there are no proper roads in my Buffer Forest, so please watch your step."
"Alright," Da Ya replied, picking up the remaining two boxes and following behind Xiaqing.
Reaching the village entrance, Xiaqing reminded him, "I have two wolves at my house. They don’t hurt people. Just follow me inside, Brother Ya."
"Alright." Da Ya felt no fear toward this pack of wolves that delivered Green Light prey, only curiosity and envy.
’A pack of wolves like this... I’d want one too.’
Leading Da Ya near her house, Xiaqing was not surprised to see the Head Wolf standing on the ruins of a house outside her yard, staring at them. Xiaqing took the initiative to greet it. "Queen, this is the supplies I just traded for. I couldn’t bring them back alone. This is Brother Ya, who helped me carry them."
Da Ya found Xiaqing’s introduction novel. He formally greeted the wolf on the ruins, "A pleasure to meet you."
’Queen... that’s an even more embarrassing title than Cat Princess.’ Da Ya couldn’t bring himself to say it out loud.
Watching the wolf vanish in a single leap, Da Ya finally felt a surge of fear. "A High... a High Level Speed Evolver?"
"I think so."
Xiaqing led Da Ya past the sheep pen and, as expected, found the Sick Wolf lying inside. The Head Wolf stood in front of it, acting as its protector. The Weasel that had been plucking feathers was gone, and a plucked chicken now sat at Xiaqing’s door.
Xiaqing greeted the two wolves again, picked up the chicken, and opened the security door. "Brother Ya, the basement is under this house."
"Alright." As Da Ya passed the front of the sheep pen carrying the boxes, his muscles tensed up.
Xiaqing went inside, turned on the lights, and greeted the Sheep Leader, which was lying on a tatami mat. "Leader, this is Brother San’s companion. He’s here to help us install the equipment."
Having just been startled by wolves twice, Da Ya’s perception was once again shattered by the "mad sheep" lying on a straw mat in the living room. He nodded, somewhat numbly. "Sheep Leader, I’ve heard a lot about you."
This wasn’t just polite talk from Da Ya. The "mad" Strength Evolution Sheep in the Third Territory was famous in the neighboring territories. Xiaqing had nearly gotten into a fight with the Second Territory over it.
However, since the sheep never left the territory, everyone had heard of it, but no one had actually seen it. Da Ya hadn’t expected it to be so fat. ’What a pity it’s not a Green Light animal,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, all this meat would be enough for Brother San to feast on for a dozen meals.’
"BAA—"
The Sheep Leader, displeased at being stared at by Da Ya, stood up and began pawing the ground, ready for a fight. Its cry was a clear call for the Head Wolf and Xiaqing to back it up.
Da Ya immediately shielded the boxes, terrified the sheep would go berserk.
"Don’t cause trouble. Brother Ya is here to help us," Xiaqing said, quickly scooping up the Sheep Leader and carrying it to the sheep pen. "Queen, can you watch the Leader? I need to install the equipment."
After one look from the Head Wolf, the Sheep Leader stopped pawing the ground and its defiant gaze vanished, becoming completely docile.
Back inside the house, Xiaqing turned on the light in the tool shed. "The cellar was built under this room. Brother Ya, could you please help me move one set of equipment in? I’m going to prepare the chicken first before it’s no longer fresh."
Xiaqing quickly cleaned the giblets from the plucked chicken, placed the whole thing in a pot, added water, and set it to stew. Then she entered the cellar under the tool shed and saw Da Ya unboxing the equipment in the food storage chamber.
Xiaqing asked for his opinion, "Brother Ya, do you think this storage chamber is usable?"
To accommodate the equipment, Xiaqing had built a wall in the underground storage area and installed a door, separating the chamber from the outer passage. The interior walls of the chamber were coated with two layers of insect-repellent putty, making the room look very white and bright.
The Yi Stone that used to hang in the cellar’s food storage chamber had been put away by Xiaqing. The room was empty except for a sealed bag of grain on a shelf against the wall.
By the standards of Territory Land No. 7’s food storage facilities, this cellar in the Third Territory was completely substandard. But the fact that Xiaqing had managed to build it to this state was already quite impressive. Da Ya nodded. "It’s usable."
Da Ya first widened the hole Xiaqing had already made in the wall for the indoor and outdoor units. This was necessary to pass the bundle of connection wires—for the neutral line, compressor, cooling fan, and four-way valve—through the hole to connect the two units.
After drilling the hole, Da Ya installed the temperature and humidity monitor and the indoor unit first, then mounted the outdoor unit on the exterior wall. Finally, he connected it to the battery Xiaqing had brought over.
When the machine was powered on and started running, Xiaqing was pleasantly surprised.
The sound of the outdoor unit’s fan was less than thirty decibels. With noise that low, anyone entering the yard wouldn’t hear the equipment running unless they were an Auditory Evolver of Level 4 and above!
After teaching Xiaqing how to use the temperature and humidity monitor, Da Ya explained, "Once you set the temperature, humidity, and ventilation frequency, the monitor will automatically track the indoor conditions. The machine will only run when the air quality drops below the standard or when it needs to ventilate. Just make sure the power supply isn’t cut. These two sets of equipment are brand new. As long as they’re kept free of water and insects and aren’t damaged by external force, they should run without issues for five years. If a problem does come up, just let Brother San know."
Yan Long, Ji Li, and the person in charge of Territory Land No. 7’s external communications for the past half-month all referred to Zhang San as "our Lord." Da Ya, however, called him "Brother San." Based on this address, he was likely part of Brother San’s inner circle.
Xiaqing continued to seek his advice. "Thank you, Brother Ya. Do you see any other ways I can improve this cellar?"
