Farming After the End of the World
Chapter 178: Are These Really the Wolves That Wiped Out the Wind and Cloud Team?
Chapter 178: Chapter 178: Are These Really the Wolves That Wiped Out the Wind and Cloud Team?
Xiaqing pinched the Sick Wolf’s mouth shut with one hand and grabbed its back with the other, carrying it into the cave.
The two people from Territory Land No. 7 followed her in. One injected the Sick Wolf with an anesthetic while the other immediately disinfected the cave, fumigated for pests, and set up a tent with surgical equipment. "Miss Xia, please don’t let the Wolf Group inside. We’re starting the examination and surgery now. It should take about an hour."
"Alright. Thank you both for your help." After Xiaqing handed the Sick Wolf to them, the two zipped up the tent, turned on a light, and began the treatment.
Although a light was on inside, not a single ray leaked out. Xiaqing had seen this type of tent before—it was a military field medical tent. Territory Land No. 7 had so many good things it made Xiaqing drool with envy.
"Evolution Grass Seeds have pierced both eyes and already started to root. Disinfect the eye area, shine a light on its pupils. Surgical forceps."
"Shave the fur on the left foreleg. Administer the Insect Repellent."
"It’s reacting. Increase the anesthetic dose."
"..."
Listening to the calm dialogue from inside the tent and the DRIP... DRIP... of the Insect Repellent in the IV tube, Xiaqing thought, ’This wolf... it might actually be saved.’
An hour later, when the tent opened, the light inside was already off. The heavy smell of disinfectant washed over her.
One of the people from Territory Land No. 7 handed Xiaqing a large bag of medicine. "Over the next few days, the wolf will excrete parasites from its body. These are eye drops, to be applied once every eight hours. This bag contains oral medication, also to be fed once every eight hours. This last one is for the wolf with the back injury..."
Xiaqing carefully committed the instructions to memory and asked, "Will the wolf’s eyesight recover?"
The other person gave a definitive answer. "The Evolution Grass Seeds pierced its eyes the day before yesterday. They were just showing signs of taking root, and we’ve removed them. We saved its eyeballs and corneas. As long as no infection or deterioration occurs during treatment, its sight will recover."
Xiaqing thanked them again. After seeing the people from Territory Land No. 7 off, she conferred with the Head Wolf. "This Sick Wolf needs medicine three times a day, and we have to prevent bacterial infections. I’ll have to take it back to my territory for treatment."
"There are enemies waiting outside the territory right now; it’s very dangerous. Queen, you don’t need to bring it food. I’ll be responsible for its food."
In less than an hour, it would be dawn. Xiaqing had to return to her territory before daybreak. She picked up the frail Sick Wolf, placed it in a sealed bag, and stuffed it into her backpack.
Of course, she had to leave an air hole in the sealed bag and the backpack, otherwise the wolf would suffocate.
As Xiaqing passed the cabin by the farmland on her way back to her territory, the three people inside still caught a foul stench, even though none of them were Olfactory Evolutionaries.
Hu Zifeng came out and asked in a low voice, "What took you so long?"
Xiaqing replied in a whisper, "The Wolf Group brought another wolf that was extremely sick. The surgery took a lot of time. I brought the Sick Wolf back with me. It’s very weak right now, so it won’t be a big problem even if someone finds it."
After the Great Evolution of Blue Star’s organisms, humans had always tried to tame powerful combat-oriented Evolutionary Animals. Picking up sick or heavily injured Evolutionary Animals to tame was a common method.
The two injured wolves couldn’t be discovered because although they had external injuries, they were still strong, and one of them was a rare Brain Domain Evolver. But if this old, near-death wolf was seen, people would only laugh at Xiaqing for picking up a piece of trash and wasting time and points.
Even if a wolf like this was saved, how much combat power would it have?
Hu Zifeng held his breath and looked at Xiaqing, momentarily at a loss for words.
’This wolf itself isn’t a huge problem,’ he thought, ’but the Third Territory raising a mad sheep is already weird enough. Adding a sick wolf is even weirder.’
Inside the cabin, the Speed Evolver teammate Eryong couldn’t help but complain, "The leader is missing part of an ear, and its members either have broken backs and legs or are on death’s door. Is this really the same Wolf Group that wiped out the Wind and Cloud Team last year?"
Xiaqing...
The other Speed Evolver teammate, Jing Kuan, actually thought this Wolf Group was formidable. "This Wolf Group has indeed had a rough time lately, but the Head Wolf hasn’t abandoned its injured members. It even risked bringing them into human territory for treatment. For that courage and responsibility alone, it deserves the title of Head Wolf. It’s only a matter of time before this Wolf Group becomes powerful again."
"Brother Jing is right." Although she had clashed with the Head Wolf, Xiaqing also agreed that it was an excellent leader.
Hu Zifeng lowered his voice and told Xiaqing to go back and rest. "You’ve been busy all night, and it’s almost dawn. You should hurry back and get some rest."
It would be dawn in another hour. Xiaqing didn’t plan on going back to sleep. She had gotten four hours of sleep last night and had enough energy to get through the day.
After returning home, Xiaqing decided to give the Sick Wolf a bath while the anesthetic was still in effect. Although she wasn’t an Olfactory Evolutionary, the Sick Wolf’s smell was so awful that she didn’t dare take off her Protective Mask without bathing it.
Xiaqing pulled the sealed bag containing the Sick Wolf directly out of her backpack and took it into the bathroom. She decided to use the large bag as a bathtub, pouring warm water into it.
The Sheep Leader entered the bathroom and pawed at its own bathtub with its hoof, gesturing for Xiaqing to use its tub to wash the wolf, indicating that it was much more comfortable.
Xiaqing explained, "We can’t share bathtubs. Everyone uses their own. Leader, go wait outside. Your wool is getting all wet from the splashing."
The Sheep Leader didn’t move, just stood by the side and watched.
While washing the wolf, Xiaqing made idle chat with the Sheep Leader. "Before you met me, were you always with the Wolf Group? Why weren’t you with the Wolf Group this spring?"
Of course, the Sheep Leader didn’t answer.
Once the Sick Wolf’s sparse, dull fur was wet, it looked even thinner. Afraid it would get cold, Xiaqing quickly washed and dried it, then placed it on a straw mat in the sheep pen.
The August sun rose from the eastern mountains, shining into the sheep pen. The Sheep Leader entered the pen and lay down beside the Sick Wolf. Its glowing white wool was a stark contrast to the Sick Wolf’s dull, dark fur.
Xiaqing yawned and officially began her busy day.
First, she went back inside and meticulously rinsed her Protective Suit, sterilizing and disinfecting it. She also took the opportunity to wash and disinfect the new Yi Stone she had acquired. Then, she took off the Protective Suit, opened the windows in every room to air them out, and only then went to the kitchen to cook a pot of corn-flour porridge and mix a batch of dough to let it rise.
After communicating with the three female Lords of Territories No. 5, No. 6, and the Tenth Territory on the Lord channel, Xiaqing had learned the trick of using baking soda to leaven dough. Now she could steam buns and griddle leavened flatbreads.
She had expended a lot of energy last night and wanted to reward herself with a hearty breakfast. After mixing the flour into a ball of dough, Xiaqing took off the small piece of Yi Stone she wore around her neck and placed it next to the mixing bowl.
This way, it could block the Harmful Element from corroding the dough, and the resulting flatbread would have a better texture. This wasn’t a trick someone else taught her; Xiaqing had figured it out herself.
Once she had more Yi Stones, she would put one in every room to block the tyrannical Harmful Element from getting inside.
’What can I say? A girl’s gotta be this extravagant.’
To achieve that ideal state of living, she had to make sure that Sick Wolf survived.
Xiaqing went down to the cellar to check the temperature and humidity. The results were still not ideal. Under these conditions, even if she hung a Yi Stone, the food and seeds wouldn’t last until next year’s planting season.
A new plan formed in Xiaqing’s mind. She took the chicks and goslings out of the cellar and put them in the chicken coop. Only one Red Light gosling remained, and it was being completely dominated by the little black-feathered cockerel. Xiaqing couldn’t be bothered to separate them into different cages or pens, so she just let the black-feathered cockerel lead them all.
