Farming After the End of the World
Chapter 156: The War Begins
Chapter 156: Chapter 156: The War Begins
The next morning, Xiaqing was woken by the chirping and squawking of chickens and geese.
Xiaqing went downstairs and saw the Sheep Leader was still asleep. She tiptoed to the tool shed to turn on the lights for the poultry, put out their feed and water, and then heard a "THUD... THUD..." from outside. Something heavy had hit the ground.
The Wolf Group had arrived.
The Wolf Group had brought two small wild boars. They left one in front of the sheep pen and the other in front of her security door.
Xiaqing was stunned. She went outside, pointed at the small wild boars, and asked the Head Wolf, "Are these Green Light Wild Boars? If you keep hunting like this, aren’t you going to hunt all the Green Light animals to extinction? We need to be sustainable, or what are we going to eat in the future?"
The Head Wolf personally went to the sheep pen, dragged out the injured Brain Domain Evolution Wolf, and placed it beside one of the boars before staring at Xiaqing.
Xiaqing understood. She loudly promised, "Don’t you worry! Even if Top Level Evolved Fierce Birds show up today, I’ll protect your pack member with my life. They’ll have to fly over my dead body to hurt this wolf!"
Xiaqing cheerfully carried a wild boar back inside to test it and found that it was, indeed, a Green Light.
’What kind of skill do these wolves have to distinguish Green Light animals? They’re spot-on every single time.’
She had an important combat mission today and no time to process and store the pork. Xiaqing immediately sent a message to Ji Li, asking if Territory Land No. 7 wanted any small Green Light wild boars.
Ji Li replied quickly. They would take any parts Xiaqing didn’t want. This actually saved Xiaqing some trouble, as she really didn’t have the time to deal with the pig’s entrails and head today.
She quickly bled and skinned the wild boar, then cut it in half, sealed the parts in separate bags, and carried them to the North Isolation Zone of No.3 Territory to meet the person from Territory Land No. 7, exchange code words, and trade supplies.
The other person didn’t say much, simply handing her a sealed glass box inside an insulated cotton sleeve and an A4 sheet of paper. Xiaqing took them. "Thanks. I’ll return the box next time."
Back home with the box, Xiaqing read the handwritten instructions on the paper. It said the box contained two injections that needed to be used within two hours. Once the sealed box was opened, the intramuscular injections had to be administered within fifteen minutes.
Accompanying the injections were two anesthetic tablets to be dissolved in water, with no side effects. Besides the medicine for the wolves, there were also three bags of special hemostatic powder and a spray for reducing swelling and pain, all for her.
Not even counting the items for the wolves, the four medical supplies for her alone were worth far more than a Green Light Wild Boar. This was only possible because of Zhang San’s love for good food; anyone else would have been reluctant to make such a trade.
Xiaqing happily stored the items away and went to clean the yard. She didn’t know where the wolves had dragged the leftover prey, but a large pool of blood remained in the yard.
After cleaning the ground and spraying Deodorant, Xiaqing noticed the Head Wolf resting in the sheep pen with its eyes closed, looking exhausted. She said softly, "Queen, you don’t have to prepare Green Light prey for me every day. The Yi Stone you gave me is more than enough to cover the cost for both wolves."
Xiaqing pulled out the Yi Stone hanging around her neck to show the Head Wolf. "As long as you give me another stone like this, you won’t have to bring me any more prey."
The Head Wolf didn’t even open its eyes, but Xiaqing saw its fluffy, notched ear twitch. It had clearly heard her, but what it would do, Xiaqing had no idea.
The Head Wolf had paid a hefty "rent," so of course Xiaqing had to provide the best service for her two recuperating SVIP customers. After cleaning the yard, she used a wooden stick to retrieve the water basin from the sheep pen. She thoroughly cleaned and disinfected it, filled it with fresh spring water, and brought it to the front of the pen, showing the anesthetic tablets to the wolves.
"Queen, everyone, please look up. These are medicine tablets for the two injured wolves. After they drink this, they won’t be able to move, and I have to give them their shots."
The injections would be painful. Without anesthetizing the two wolves first, Xiaqing wouldn’t dare administer the shots for fear of being bitten.
Xiaqing often gave medicine to the wolves, so the Wolf Group understood the purpose of the tablets. After she passed the water mixed with the tablets into the sheep pen, the injured Brain Domain Evolution Wolf began to drink without any prompting from her.
Another healthy wolf in the pen also wanted to drink but was stopped by simultaneous low growls from the Head Wolf and the Brain Domain Evolution Wolf with the back injury.
The Brain Domain Evolution Wolf with the back injury started lapping up the water first. After it had its fill, the Head Wolf swatted the broken-leg wolf with a paw, which then crawled over and drank a good amount of water.
After the broken-leg wolf finished drinking, Xiaqing scrubbed the water basin clean, refilled it with fresh water, and placed it back in the sheep pen. "Queen, this is clean water. You can drink some too."
The Head Wolf kept its eyes closed, motionless.
Xiaqing carefully observed the two injured wolves. When she saw the broken-leg wolf unable to support itself on its forelegs, sway a few times, and collapse, and the injured Brain Domain Evolution Wolf’s head loll onto the straw mat, she immediately went back inside and brought out the box. "Queen, you two, move aside. I need to treat the two wolves."
Of the four wolves, not one moved. The injections had to be administered within two hours, and Xiaqing still had to prepare for battle. She had no time to waste on them and immediately called for her companion, "Leader, get out here!"
The Sheep Leader kicked the door open and came clopping out of the house. CLOP, CLOP, CLOP.
Xiaqing held up the box and tried to negotiate with it. "Bring your friends out. I need to treat the two injured wolves. Quick, bring your friends out."
The Sheep Leader squinted at the box for a moment, sniffed it, and realizing it wasn’t food, clopped into the sheep pen. It grabbed the neck of the broken-leg wolf lying on the straw mat and effortlessly dragged it in front of Xiaqing. The Head Wolf then dragged out the other injured wolf as well.
Xiaqing, who had originally planned to go into the sheep pen to give the injections...
’That’s not what I meant, but... this works too.’
Give the injured wolves their shots in front of the two healthy ones? Xiaqing didn’t have the guts. She was afraid the Head Wolf would tear her to pieces if it saw.
She carried the two injured wolves into the house, placed them on the Sheep Leader’s tatami mat, and then opened the sealed box to retrieve the injections. The instructions didn’t say, and Ji Li hadn’t mentioned, so Xiaqing didn’t know what was in these two thirty-milliliter injections, but it was definitely something highly active and potent.
Otherwise, it wouldn’t have come with such strict storage requirements and a tight time limit.
After giving the injections, Xiaqing carried the two wolves back out into the yard and instructed the Sheep Leader, "Leader, all done. You can drag them back inside."
The Sheep Leader squinted at Xiaqing, unmoving.
Xiaqing gave in. She took a compressed ration from her pocket and negotiated in a soft voice, "Thank you for your hard work, Leader. I’m sorry to wake you up so early. This is your payment."
The Sheep Leader immediately trotted out, gestured for Xiaqing to stuff the compressed ration into its saddlebag, and only then dragged the injured wolves back into the sheep pen.
Noticing the Head Wolf was also staring at her, Xiaqing immediately began to coax it in the same tone, "The Queen has it even harder, having to hunt and deliver prey every day. I’m truly moved and impressed. The Queen is mighty! Would the Queen please carry her companion back into the pen to recover?"
Only then did the Head Wolf slowly walk out and carry the injured Brain Domain Evolution Wolf back inside.
After taking care of the wolves, Xiaqing went back inside. As she took out the sprayer to apply the Deodorant, she heard a broadcast from the radio:
The flock of Evolved Fierce Birds that had lingered in the Evolution Forest last night has now engaged with the first line of defense of Hui Yi Base One. The war has begun.
