Chapter 23: Deciding a name(1)
{Understood, sir. Once you decide where you want to see your new property, please let me know.}
Kai hummed. "Understood. And thank you for your cooperation." He ended the call with a smile on his face.
Benjamin had assured him that the resale amount for the house would be credited to his account within a day. Apparently, there were so many people waiting to purchase houses in that block that the authorities did not make much fuss about repurchasing properties they had already sold.
And since Kai had never moved into the house, he would receive its full value. From what he had heard from the system, that could amount to nearly a billion.
No wonder only high-ranking hunters live there.
Even if Kai had spent eighty years working as a punching bag, taking abuse from several customers every day, he still would not have been able to afford even a tenth of that amount.
Now, however, he would have enough money to buy a much larger house, though it would have to be in a less secure location.
Still, that was more than enough for him. It would be a considerable improvement over the place they were living in now.
"It’s all done. Tomorrow, we’ll receive the funds, and then we can start looking for a house." Kai said as he returned to the table, where Jean was cutting beans for lunch.
Jean let out a relieved sigh. "Thankfully, most of my relatives live in other cities. The ones who live here, like my uncle and sisters, are all in the Kreacher’s Block. At least that means we’ll be safe somewhere else."
Kai tilted his head thoughtfully. "Then how about Blue Mountain? It’s a small, cozy community that was built recently, and it’s close to the Frost Reaper Guild as well."
Jean looked up from the beans. "Would that be convenient for your work?"
Kai leaned back in his chair. "Actually, I’ve been thinking about that. I might stop working where I am and find something new."
He had already made the decision, though he had yet to discuss it with his partner.
He had the resources to start over. More importantly, he now possessed the means to grow stronger.
Between the mysterious pill and the strange key, there was no telling how far his strength could eventually reach. And once he became strong enough, he would even be able to participate in dungeon raids.
So yes, his days of working as a convenient target for other people’s anger were finally coming to an end.
For the first time in a long while, Kai was preparing to leave that life behind.
Jean smiled faintly. "You seem to be going through quite a few positive changes in your life recently."
"All thanks to you and our child," he replied without a moment’s hesitation.
Everything had changed after Jean appeared outside his house with their little one in her arms.
They had not only triggered the system, but had also left a profound impact on him. Having a child of his own made Kai want to become a better person. He wanted to be someone she could look up to, someone worthy of being called her father.
"I... didn’t really do anything." Jean grew a little shy at his words. She lowered her head and returned to her work, suddenly finding the beans far more interesting.
Kai watched her for a moment before something suddenly occurred to him.
"Right. The names."
He hurried over to the wall where his shirt was hanging and pulled out a folded sheet of paper from one of its pockets.
Jean sighed when she saw his eagerness. "Quite eager, aren’t you?"
Kai nodded. "Of course I am. I mean, it’s important that she starts recognizing her name by now."
Jean could hardly argue with that. She stopped cutting the vegetables and went to retrieve the list of names she had prepared as well.
Before sitting down, she checked on the baby. The little girl was still sound asleep after her first meal, completely oblivious to the important discussion being held on her behalf.
The two of them exchanged their lists and began going through the names.
It took barely a second before Jean picked up a pen and started crossing out several of Kai’s choices.
Kai groaned. "That’s outright cruel. At this point, you might as well tear up the whole page."
Jean tilted her head, seemingly considering his complaint before asking, "Just imagine calling out ’Momo’ in a crowded place and watching your daughter hide her face in embarrassment."
Kai huffed. "It’s an adorable name, and you know it."
Jean pursed her lips and glanced toward the adorable little fluff ball sleeping on the bed. The baby had her tiny fists clenched as she stirred in her sleep, her little lips moving as though she were trying to say something in the middle of a dream.
Jean sighed.
"Okay. One proper name and one pet name. We’ll choose her given name from my list and her house name from yours."
Kai’s expression immediately brightened. "Sounds great."
And thus, the mission to name their daughter officially began.
