Chapter 195: Echoes of the First Savior
The blinding white light slowly faded into a soothing, tranquil darkness.
[System Alert: Temporal Dungeon Cleared.]
[Primary Objective: The Fall of Thaldrasil Prevented.]
The Captain opened his eyes.
He expected to feel the agonizing, jagged pain of shattered ribs. He expected his lungs to burn with hemorrhaging blood. He braced himself for the suffocating weight of the ruined iron chainmail.
He felt nothing but perfect, weightless clarity.
He sat up slowly. The cheap Dwarven armor was gone. The scarred, bearded face of Haldor the guard had vanished entirely. He looked down at his own hands.
He was wearing his custom-tailored dark jacket. His pristine white mask rested securely on his face. His original, healthy body had been completely restored.
He stood up and looked around. The environment was utterly breathtaking.
He was standing in the exact center of a massive, circular island made of flawless, transparent glass. There were no walls and no sky. Suspended directly beneath the floating glass island was a sprawling, violently swirling purple galaxy.
Thick clusters of violet stardust and slowly rotating nebulas drifted in the infinite expanse below his boots. The cosmic light bathed the glass platform in a surreal, ethereal glow.
RUMBLE.
A sudden, deafening sound shook the glass beneath his feet. It was not a monster. It was two incredibly loud, booming voices arguing with deep, bitter resentment.
"You swung your hammer a fraction of a second too late, Kazrunn!"
The first voice belonged to a colossal, towering Elven warrior. The figure was an astral projection made entirely of shimmering silver moonlight. He wore ancient, ornate armor woven from living wood and starlight.
"If your shield had not faltered, the roots of the canopy would have held against the beast!"
"My shield did not falter, Caelithor!"
The second voice erupted from an equally massive Dwarven king. He was forged from glowing, golden earth-light. His thick, braided beard looked like flowing magma.
"Your magical wards were as brittle as dried leaves! I held the frontline for three days while your arrogant priests played with their glowing rocks! You left my flanks completely exposed!"
The two ancient entities glared at each other. They were the original, Level 200 Guardians of Thaldrasil. They had been trapped in this astral space for centuries, locked in a bitter loop of blame over their ultimate failure.
The Captain watched them argue. He did not say a word. He simply took a slow step forward.
CLINK.
His combat boot tapped against the glass island. The sound was microscopic, but in the dead silence of the astral realm, it echoed like a gunshot.
The two colossal entities froze. They stopped their bitter argument instantly. They slowly turned their massive heads toward the center of the platform.
They stared down at the human boy in the black coat.
Kazrunn, the towering Dwarven king, squinted his golden eyes. The molten light of his beard flared with sudden, intense unease.
"By the core of the earth," Kazrunn whispered. His booming voice dropped into a hushed, terrified rumble.
"Do you feel that gravity, Caelithor?"
Caelithor took a hesitant step backward. The silver moonlight composing his form flickered erratically.
"It cannot be," Caelithor murmured, staring directly into the pitch-black eyes of the Captain.
"The eyes. The coldness trapped inside that void. It is a mirror."
"Do not speak the title lightly," Kazrunn warned, though his own massive hands were visibly trembling.
"But look at the vector of his soul. The sheer, crushing weight of his presence. It feels exactly like The Last Light Before Oblivion."
Caelithor shuddered. The mighty Elven warrior looked at the Captain with a mixture of profound reverence and deep, primal terror.
"A phenomenon wrapped in human skin," Caelithor whispered cryptically.
"The anomaly who stood at the very edge of the end. He carries that same, terrifying silence."
The Captain narrowed his eyes.
He possessed [Conceptual Vector Authority]. He was deeply attuned to the fabric of reality. He knew the entities were not speaking metaphorically.
They were sensing the fundamental nature of his cosmic core and comparing it to something they had physically witnessed in the ancient past.
"Explain yourselves," the Captain commanded. His cold, flat voice cut through the purple cosmic glow.
"Who are you comparing me to?"
Kazrunn and Caelithor exchanged a very long, very solemn look.
"Some echoes are too heavy for this fragmented realm, human," Kazrunn replied softly, deliberately dodging the question.
"We cannot speak of the anomaly. The universe listens too closely."
The Captain did not press the issue. He filed the cryptic title away in his mind. The Last Light Before Oblivion. It was a piece of lore he would dissect later.
"Then tell me who you are," the Captain demanded.
Caelithor stepped forward, bowing his massive, silver-lit head in a gesture of profound respect.
"I am Caelithor. The Moonleaf Protector," the Elven entity introduced himself.
"And I am Kazrunn. The Living Bulwark," the Dwarven king rumbled, pressing a massive fist over his glowing chest.
"We were the original Ancestors of Thaldrasil. The first to reach the peak of power. And the first to fall to the King Level Beast."
"You died," Draven noted bluntly.
"We failed," Caelithor corrected, his voice laced with eternal shame.
"We were the first to fall to the King Level Beast centuries ago."
Kazrunn looked down at the swirling purple galaxy beneath the glass.
"Because we failed to kill it, it festered in our roots," Kazrunn growled softly.
"It survived to manipulate our descendants, Thorgar and Sylveth, trapping our mountain in a loop of suffering."
"But we watched through the veil," Kazrunn continued.
"We watched you step into the simulation. We watched you shatter the beast’s dimensional anchor. You secured the victory we could not achieve. You saved our home."
The Captain placed his hands in the pockets of his dark jacket.
"Thaldrasil was a simulation," the Captain stated.
"The real world has already moved on. The mountain is gone."
"Is it?" Caelithor asked softly. A sad, knowing smile touched the Elven Guardian’s face.
"You only know the current era, young warrior. You only know the world as isolated cages."
Kazrunn nodded heavily.
"You call them Bastions," the Dwarven king grunted.
"Bastion Six. Bastion Seven. Numbered fortresses hiding behind massive walls of iron and magic."
The Captain remained completely silent. The true history of the world was about to be laid bare.
"Before the Bastionification of the world," Caelithor explained, sweeping his massive hand across the starry void, "the world was whole. There were sprawling empires of green and gold. Oceans without end. Mountains that touched the stars. We did not hide behind towering walls. We walked freely beneath the open sky."
"But the darkness came," Kazrunn growled, his golden eyes burning with ancient hatred.
"The sky burned. The corruption leaked into the soil. The monsters did not just attack our cities. They sought to consume the very dimension we lived in."
Caelithor lowered his head.
"To survive the end of the old world, the continents had to be shattered," Caelithor revealed.
"The world was compressed. Massive, thriving civilizations were sealed into separate, fragmented dimensional pockets just to keep the darkness out. That is what a Bastion truly is. A fragmented piece of a broken planet, floating in a sea of monsters."
The Captain processed the massive lore drop.
The Bastions were not just fortified cities. They were dimensional lifeboats. The world outside the walls was not just a wasteland. It was the ruined, devoured corpse of the original planet.
"Thaldrasil was not just a mountain," Kazrunn said proudly.
"It was the crowning jewel of the old world. And because you purged the King Level Beast from its core, the spirit of Thaldrasil has finally been set free from the loop."
Caelithor raised his glowing silver hands. Kazrunn raised his golden hammer.
The two massive entities began to dissolve. Their astral forms slowly broke apart into thousands of glowing particles of light, drawn toward the purple galaxy below.
"Our time is over," Caelithor whispered, his voice fading into the cosmic wind.
"We can finally rest. But before we fade, we leave our lingering legacies to the ones who fought in our names."
"Your squad bled for our mountain," Kazrunn rumbled, his golden form turning to dust.
"Tell the boy with the hammer to use my forge well. And tell the girl with the herbs to protect the old knowledge."
The Captain watched the ancient Guardians vanish completely.
The glass island beneath his boots began to violently crack. The purple galaxy surged upward, swallowing the platform whole.
The astral dimension was collapsing. It was time to return to the waking world, and claim the ultimate rewards of the dungeon.
