Chapter 285: Chapter 146: Magic Resonance, The Soul-devouring Dog’s Evolution
Yan Ruoruo pushed herself up from the bed, her black hair cascading over her shoulders.
“…Is something approaching?”
Her languid expression, not yet fully shaken off, formed a strange contrast with the sudden alertness gathering in her eyes.
The sheets slipped down, revealing a large expanse of pale skin, like an epiphyllum flower quietly blooming in the dead of night.
“It’s probably a disturbance far away that startled Xiaoye.”
Su Chen explained. His communication with his Summoned Pet wasn’t as convenient as a Warlock’s, but he could confirm that it wasn’t some uninvited guest visiting the campsite in the middle of the night.
He quickly and deftly got dressed. With a single thought, the radio on the desk turned on from across the room.
Usually, the six official radio stations would broadcast content on a 24-hour rotation. After all, in these special apocalyptic times, not everyone could sleep soundly.
For instance, the dedicated music stations would automatically play tracks designed to help people sleep.
The Rune Knowledge station, on the other hand, would broadcast Rune synthesis formulas and their practical applications in turn.
And FM 98.5, the Voice of Dongfu, reported on various current events and apocalypse survival tips.
Right now, a breaking news story was being reported by the female announcer, Wenwen.
“…We interrupt this broadcast with an emergency bulletin! A large-scale force of Dark Undead Creatures has been spotted five li outside the Rune Core stronghold and is rapidly approaching. The force includes High-Tier Ghosts, Shadow Crows, and suspected Death Knight units!”
“A city-wide level-one alert has been activated. All powerful Professionals are to immediately head to the central stronghold to provide support! Light Element Professionals, in particular, are urged to depart at once and report to the nearest Forward Base.”
The situation had suddenly become tense.
On the final day of the world mission, the enemy had pulled a new trick out of their bag.
“Forbidden Demonic Knowledge?” Su Chen murmured.
An Undead Legion of this calamitous scale couldn’t have just appeared out of nowhere.
This was not the kind of army that a Necromancer, an Undead Prelate, or even a higher-tier Five-Star or Six-Star Profession could create.
The soundproof field generated by the Silent Stone in the RV had naturally blocked all outside noise. When he stepped out of Unit 13, his keen sense of hearing, his Perception, immediately pierced through the camp’s buildings and picked up the alarm sounding from beyond Cyan Dragon Ridge.
After receiving a wave of Elemental feedback last night, his personal Perception Attribute had increased by 5, bringing the stat to 34.
Even without using Elemental Power or his profession’s Authority, the sensory capabilities of his physical body were on a completely different level than before.
“Time to get up.”
Su Chen woke everyone up one by one, releasing Xiaolin in the process. Yan Ziqian, who had been sleeping on the third floor, had already sensed the disturbance and was the first one downstairs.
Soon, the entire group was fully armed and equipped.
Faced with this sudden crisis, everyone’s mood was relatively stable, perhaps influenced by the composure of Su Chen, their number one.
After preparing dry rations for them, Ms. Cheng pondered for a moment before deciding to go with them as well.
“I won’t feel at ease staying at the camp anyway. If the city really falls, I can’t just survive by myself. Besides, I have a Healing Skill, so I can at least be of some help,” she said, a bit emotionally.
The duty of guarding the base thus fell completely on Gong Jun, who was staying behind alone.
The group wasted no time, flying from the campsite to the border town of Qixia.
As usual, Su Chen took only Ruoruo and flew ahead first. He had drunk a Recovery Potion beforehand, and by using Aurora Flash at full, unreserved speed, he set a new record time for reaching the border town.
“5 minutes and 21 seconds.”
He glanced at his watch upon a successful arrival.
‘If Shadow Leap, Flash, and the Flying Skill that make up this woven Technique break through, I’ll be even faster.’
“Hurry!”
“Gate South-2 also needs support! Those who are able should sweep along the border. The Undead Calamity’s grand army is invading along the entire southern front!”
Outside the Teleportation Gate, someone was shouting reminders.
In yesterday’s battle, Teleportation Gate South-3 was unfortunately destroyed, so that could also be considered a breach point.
“Let’s go.”
Su Chen and Ruoruo immediately teleported to the Rune Core stronghold.
…
In less than two seconds, their vision cleared, revealing an unbelievable sight.
A glance into the distance revealed a black tide of an undead army surging toward them. In the flickering firelight, one could see skeletal Warriors in broken armor and savage-faced Ghouls charging in their direction.
Vast swaths of ghosts rose like gray fog, sweeping over the scorched earth at astonishing speeds, making a beeline for the city wall’s defensive line.
BOOM!
BOOM!
In the distant woods, explosive traps were triggered one after another, their blasts even more outrageous than landmines, powerful enough to reduce a passing Ghoul to a puddle of gore.
Those were the Magic traps the garrisoned troops had specially deployed outside during the night.
Furthermore, Electric Grid Skills were interwoven in the low sky, forming an invisible barrier. The currents danced like frenzied silver snakes, and most who touched it were sent into convulsions; the weaker ones were even instantly reduced to charred husks.
Such measures were naturally meant to slow the enemy’s advance and serve as a deterrent, but they also helped everyone sleep more soundly.
Just then…
“Thunder Strike Skill!”
A twenty-man thunder-mage squad from the assault corps roared in unison, many of them raising their Magic Staves to the sky to amplify their casting.
In that instant, the heavens transformed. Dark clouds materialized out of thin air in the night sky, swiftly converging into a single mass as if in Resonance. The electrical charges within exchanged energy, growing ever stronger and more brilliant.
The cloud layer roiled like boiling water, the arcs of electricity within so dense they merged into a single, ghastly white curtain of light.
“Magic Resonance,” Su Chen and Ruoruo said in near-perfect unison.
This was a principle they had undoubtedly discovered through group combat. When multiple, identical Techniques were cast in the same area, it would trigger a peculiar resonant convergence, amplifying their power.
