Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking
Chapter 178: I’m Carrying the Lowell Family’s Flesh and Blood
Caleb Lowell closed his eyes. No matter how much he didn’t want to believe it, after the incident with the pastries, he could no longer deceive himself.
"Uncle, I seem to remember you like to add a certain spice when you cook. Where does it come from?"
Clayton Lowell said, "The spice is a specialty from Felicia’s hometown. People there love to cook with it. It makes everything smell incredible..."
At this point, the police understood immediately. They sent officers to seal off the Lowell Family’s old residence right away.
Even as dense as Clayton Lowell was, he realized something was wrong. "Don’t tell me... there’s something wrong with the spice?"
Caleb Lowell glanced at Jane Lancaster and confirmed it. "Yes."
Clayton Lowell collapsed into his chair.
In Clayton Lowell’s eyes, although Felicia Everett was a housekeeper and had a child, he couldn’t resist her gentle and submissive nature.
Most of the women he was surrounded by were like Lana Sterling—born into prominent families, they were inevitably a little arrogant and would never bow and scrape for him.
As for ordinary servants or subordinates, Clayton Lowell never gave them a second glance. After all, they weren’t in the same social class.
If Felicia Everett had been on his personal payroll, he likely wouldn’t have even bothered to look her in the eye.
But she was under Caleb Lowell’s protection and was also Luna Morgan’s godmother, so she couldn’t be treated like an ordinary servant.
In the beginning, because Caleb had indirectly grounded him and forbidden him from throwing parties, Clayton was in a foul mood. He often smashed things around the house and even went so far as to slap Felicia Everett a few times.
He realized he had hit her too hard and felt a pang of guilt, terrified she would go complain to Caleb and put an end to his comfortable life.
But to his surprise, she endured it without a single complaint. She even apologized, saying it was her fault for not doing a good enough job and causing him to get angry.
Clayton Lowell had always wanted to accomplish something great. He harbored a secret dream of becoming a celebrity but had refrained from entering the entertainment industry in his youth out of concern for his social standing.
He had always believed that with his looks, physique, and family background, he deserved to be in the spotlight, adored by fans.
He never told anyone about this secret dream, but Felicia Everett understood him.
She told him he was so handsome and charming that if he entered the entertainment industry, he’d be a heaven-sent superstar! He would absolutely stun everyone and show them what a true scion of a wealthy, noble family looked like!
Jane Lancaster was left speechless.
Mrs. Everett’s gentle attentiveness wasn’t just about taking care of his daily needs; it was because she was an expert at flattery.
When Clayton Lowell watched TV at home, he would criticize one actor for being ugly and another for being "some ugly nepo baby." Even a fool could tell he wanted to be the one on screen.
’No wonder Clayton Lowell suddenly wanted to invest in a movie. So it was Mrs. Everett egging him on behind the scenes.’
Caleb Lowell’s expression darkened. He was the one who had placed Mrs. Everett with Clayton Lowell. If she was truly manipulating Clayton on purpose, then he had brought a wolf into his own home.
Regardless, until the situation was clear, Clayton Lowell was a suspect. The police took him into custody and led him to a small nearby conference room for questioning.
Although the rest of them remained in the banquet hall, they weren’t allowed to move about freely. They would have to wait until they had given their statements before they could leave.
Jasper Sterling’s gaze froze, then suddenly shot toward the small control room at the back of the banquet hall.
Jane Lancaster noticed it too—there was a sound coming from inside.
"Who’s there? Get out!" Caleb Lowell shouted, his brows furrowed.
A figure stumbled out. It was none other than the subject of their discussion, Mrs. Everett.
She rushed in front of Caleb Lowell, dropped to her knees with a THUD, and made a shocking declaration. "Young Master Lowell, please, you have to help me! I’m carrying a child of the Lowell Family!"
Clayton Lowell was holding an investor appreciation party at the hotel, and Mrs. Everett was very worried that some woman would throw herself at him.
Before, she had no say in Clayton Lowell’s private life, but now that she was pregnant, she had to plan for her own future and that of her child.
She had mainly come to see the woman who invested two hundred million, Lana Sterling. Rumor had it she’d been chasing Clayton for years. At over forty and still unmarried, Mrs. Everett figured she must be some shrewish old woman who had let herself go.
’What if that woman uses her two-hundred-million-dollar investment to make unreasonable demands on Clayton?’
In the end, Mrs. Everett still couldn’t put her mind at ease, so she had secretly followed him.
A hush fell over the room after Mrs. Everett spoke.
Alvin Lancaster was so shocked his jaw nearly hit the floor. ’Mrs. Everett is pregnant? What the hell is going on?!’
He quickly spoke up. "Mrs. Everett, first things first. Were you the one who put poppy husks in the spice? Or did you at least know they were in there?"
The police were by the main entrance and hadn’t noticed Mrs. Everett yet. The priority was to get to the bottom of the poppy husk issue.
Mrs. Everett ignored him, instead handing a report to Caleb Lowell. "It’s true. I’m pregnant with Shane’s child! This is my blood test report."
Caleb Lowell took the report and glanced at it. It was from a top-tier local hospital; Mrs. Everett had indeed been diagnosed as pregnant.
Jane Lancaster: "..."
’This isn’t surprising in the slightest. I said from the beginning that putting those two together would lead to trouble—and major trouble at that.’
Caleb Lowell took a deep breath. "Mrs. Everett, get up first."
Mrs. Everett stood up, one hand on her lower back. "I’m sorry, Young Master Lowell. It was wrong of us to hide it from you, but Shane and I are truly in love..."
Lana Sterling snapped, "Nonsense! There’s no way Shane would fall for someone like you!"
It wasn’t just her; even Willow Summers couldn’t picture Mrs. Everett and Clayton Lowell as a couple.
It wasn’t that she had a malicious mind, but how could a rich playboy like Clayton Lowell fall in love with a housekeeper? Even if he were just seeking a thrill, there was no need to pick someone her age.
"Ma’am, may I ask who you are?" Mrs. Everett asked in a soft, gentle voice. "The child is, without a doubt, Shane’s. I’m willing to do a paternity test."
She was full of confidence; the child in her belly was its source.
Jane Lancaster asked, "Does Clayton Lowell know about this?"
Mrs. Everett gently caressed her flat stomach, her face a picture of blissful anticipation. "I only just found out the good news myself. I was planning on giving Shane a surprise."
’A surprise? More like a heart attack,’ Jane thought, genuinely baffled by the woman’s confidence.
Jasper Sterling glanced at Lana Sterling, then asked with a smile, "And what makes you so sure Clayton Lowell will be happy about it?"
Mrs. Everett faltered for a second. "Shane told me he wants to get married. He said other women are all sharp-tongued and cruel, and that I’m the only one who truly understands him. Now that I’m carrying his child, of course he’ll be happy."
Lana Sterling couldn’t help but roll her eyes. "Lady, you’re dreaming. Even if Shane wanted to get married, he wouldn’t choose someone like you."
Her words hit a nerve. Mrs. Everett’s voice grew agitated. "And you think you’re so much better? Then why has he stayed single all these years instead of marrying you?"
Of course, she knew this woman was Lana Sterling. She also knew that Clayton Lowell had never once considered marrying her.
If she hadn’t steeled her resolve, stripped off her clothes, and deliberately entered Clayton’s room, she might still be just a housekeeper.
She sized up Lana Sterling. It was indeed shocking that she wasn’t the out-of-shape old woman Mrs. Everett had imagined.
But so what? No matter how great Lana Sterling’s prospects were, she still couldn’t win Clayton Lowell’s heart.
Unlike her. She was already pregnant with Clayton’s child—she held the ultimate bargaining chip.
Clayton Lowell was over forty. As a man, how could he not want a child of his own flesh and blood?
And Caleb Lowell would surely stand up for her.
