Eternal Life by Nurturing Monsters and Plants
Chapter 155 - 142: Bearing the Burden
Chapter 155: Chapter 142: Bearing the Burden
"Go on up."
After a short while, the voice sounded in their ears again. Compared to before, his tone was clearly more relaxed.
"Thank you, Senior."
Wu Yong and Dong Yao dared not be disrespectful. They bowed respectfully, then led the two little girls up the mountain path toward the summit.
The four of them walked in silence, arriving at the summit.
Meanwhile, in the Spirit Field, Yan Shaoyuan, Hao Yuegui, and Xu Li were planting Spirit Medicine.
All three could be seen catalyzing the Spirit Plants with their life-force vitality. The difference was that, compared to the other two, Yan Shaoyuan’s life-force vitality had a light green luster. His catalyzing speed was faster, and the Spirit Plant seedlings he produced were much more robust.
Even Hao Yuegui was a cut above Xu Li, and it wasn’t just a difference in the quality of their life-force vitality, but also in their experience.
Xu Li had been planting Spirit Medicine for a month at most, while Yan Shaoyuan and Hao Yuegui had many years of experience planting Tier Two Spirit Medicine.
This was only the initial sprouting stage; once the Spirit Plants grew, the gap between the three of them would become even wider.
Even Li Changsheng might have had to learn a thing or two from their experience.
When Dong Yao’s group of four arrived, Xu Li greeted them quite warmly, but Yan Shaoyuan and Hao Yuegui just glanced over before ignoring them.
Dong Yao and Wu Yong exchanged a few pleasantries with Xu Li, then led the two little girls toward Li Changsheng’s small courtyard.
Soon, the four of them arrived outside the courtyard.
Just then, Li Changsheng happened to be walking out of the kitchen carrying two wooden buckets. He looked slightly stunned to see the four people at his gate.
"Greetings, Senior Brother."
Dong Yao and Wu Yong quickly bowed in greeting.
Li Changsheng smiled and said, "Come on in and have some tea. I’ll be with you as soon as I’m done feeding the Spirit Beasts."
Seeing Li Changsheng dressed like a mortal, wearing a cooking apron and carrying wooden buckets, Dong Yao couldn’t help but cover her mouth and chuckle softly.
"Don’t mind us, Senior Brother."
Li Changsheng nodded slightly and carried the wooden buckets into the beast pen.
Instead of going inside, the four of them stood in the courtyard, looking curiously into the beast pen.
They had visited several times before, but this was the first time they had noticed the pen. The pure-white snow sheep and the Red Foxes with fur as red as fire inside made them extremely curious.
The two little girls stared at the Spirit Beasts, their eyes sparkling.
A moment later, Li Changsheng walked out, carrying the buckets.
Seeing the four of them standing in the courtyard curiously sizing up the beast pen, an idea came to him. He chuckled and said, "You can go inside and take a look."
"As it happens, I have something I’d like to discuss with you."
Dong Yao pulled her gaze away and quickly said, "Senior Brother, if you have something for us to do, just give us the order."
Wu Yong nodded repeatedly in agreement.
Li Changsheng smiled. "This is about the Spirit Beasts I’m raising. Why don’t you go take a look inside first? We can talk after."
With that, he carried the buckets toward the kitchen.
’Something about the Spirit Beasts?’
The couple exchanged puzzled glances, not knowing what he meant. After a moment’s thought, they led the two eagerly-faced little girls into the beast pen.
As soon as they stepped inside, a thick, foul stench washed over them.
Dong Yao furrowed her brow and circulated her Spiritual Power to block the smell for herself and the two little girls.
Then, she looked inside the pen.
Two Red Foxes with crimson, fluffy, flame-like fur were chasing each other, fighting over a piece of meat.
After watching for a moment, Dong Yao and Wu Yong said in surprise, "What huge Red Foxes."
They had both seen Red Foxes before, but never any this large. The two in the pen were a good deal bigger than any they had ever encountered.
Wu Yong retracted his gaze, glanced cautiously outside, and leaned in to whisper in Dong Yao’s ear, "What do you think Senior Brother Li means by this?"
Dong Yao shot him a look. "How should I know?" After a pause, she added, "Whatever Senior Brother asks, we just need to do it."
She warned, "Don’t you go and mess things up."
"I won’t, I won’t."
Wu Yong gave an embarrassed smile, waved his hands, and said no more.
Compared to the two of them, the little girls were much simpler. They rested their hands on the fence of the pen, watching the two Red Foxes inside with eyes full of adoration, having completely forgotten the foul stench that had hit them when they first entered.
After watching the Red Foxes for a while, the four of them turned to the pen holding the snow sheep.
The snow sheep’s pure white, soft, and unblemished fleece made even Dong Yao entertain the thought of raising one. The two little girls huddled together for a rare moment, whispering things no one else could understand.
Wu Yong’s eyes darted about as he continuously tried to guess what Li Changsheng wanted from them.
While they were watching, Li Changsheng quickly tidied up the kitchen, commanded a swarm of insects to pick some fruits and melons, and sat down inside the house to wait for them.
A Cup of Tea’s Time passed.
Dong Yao emerged with the two little girls, who looked reluctant to leave.
After they entered the house and sat down, Dong Yao smiled and said, "Senior Brother, your Spirit Beasts are so well-raised! The Red Foxes’ fur is glossy and they’re so large, and every one of the snow sheep has a fleece like brocade."
"Yes, and especially the Spirit Pigs you’re raising, Senior Brother. You can tell they’re extraordinarily majestic at a glance," Wu Yong chimed in flatteringly.
Li Changsheng chuckled. "Are they really that good?"
This time, it wasn’t just Dong Yao and Wu Yong; the two little girls also nodded along.
"Then what if I handed them over for you to raise?" Li Changsheng asked with a smile.
Hmm?
Confused expressions appeared on the couple’s faces.
Before they could ask, Li Changsheng sighed. "I have to plant Spirit Medicine and focus on my cultivation. I really don’t have time to look after the Spirit Beasts."
"What I mean is, I want to sell them to you."
"The Red Foxes and snow sheep are all Tier One Middle-grade Spirit Beasts, and they’re in their prime. As a couple, you definitely won’t be losing out if you buy them."
Li Changsheng looked at the two of them and said seriously, "I only have one condition: you cannot slaughter them."
"This..."
Hearing this, even Wu Yong was tempted. But he was afraid Li Changsheng would ask for an exorbitant price, so he didn’t dare agree readily.
