Chapter 111: Chapter 111- The Ancient Spirit Awakening.

The notification panel flickered as Elly projected it above the table.

Leo read through the last line again. "Please proceed to the Mana Vein Chamber to begin the awakening ritual with full membership present."

So it needs at least ten members physically inside the vault. Leo turned that over for a second.

"Looks like we’re finally ready to head back down," he said.

Hugh already had a wide grin plastered across his face, practically shaking with anticipation.

"Alright, everyone’s here—shall we move?" Leo started to rise from his seat.

Elly cut in before he could fully stand. "Master. One invitation still remains pending. Master Rook’s seventh disciple hasn’t responded."

Leo scanned the room. Eleven people, not counting himself or Shen.

"Right. One of Rook’s people said they couldn’t make it."

"Master Rook?" Leo asked.

Rook let out a heavy sigh. "That brat. I’ve spoiled her rotten, and now she just ignores me whenever she feels like it."

"The last one’s actually family. I think you’ve met her, briefly—the girl who mans the reception at my fencing hall. She came by your place with me once too. Cindy. Ring a bell?"

The name didn’t land right away, but the moment Rook described the girl at the reception desk, it clicked instantly. "Wait—you invited your granddaughter to the guild? Shouldn’t she be in school right now?"

Leo paused, trying to picture her in his mind. "Last I saw her, she was in a school uniform."

"She’s on break," Rook said simply.

"Fair enough. Let’s give it a few minutes. In the meantime—why don’t the new members take a look around the building?" Leo suggested, and the room agreed readily, scattering off to explore the hall and its facilities.

The newcomers spread out, each finding their own way of taking the place in. Yumi traced the edges of the room with her eyes, already mentally mapping out where formations could be laid. Ben had cornered Elly and was firing off question after question, clearly fascinated. Tina drifted toward the training ground and started running through basic fist forms. Jae practiced shadow-boxing off to one side of the hall, while Dara simply stood in a corner, quietly taking in everything at once. The rest wandered off in similar fashion, exploring at their own pace.

Leo watched them settle in, a small, satisfied feeling settling into his chest.

He tried reaching out to Surtr again, more out of habit than hope at this point. No answer, same as always.

Before the disappointment could fully sink in, a chime interrupted his thoughts.

[Ding~]

[Cindy has joined the guild.]

Leo blinked, surprised at how fast that had come through. A teleportation circle flared to life in the center of the hall, and a figure materialized within it—clearly younger than anyone else present, dark hair pulled into a tight ponytail, decked out in starter-tier armor and boots that looked freshly issued.

Her eyes swept the room fast, scanning for familiar faces. She found several right away, but her gaze locked immediately onto her grandfather, and she sprinted straight toward him.

"Gramps! You called out of nowhere—what happened?"

"Nothing serious. You remember that guy?" Rook nodded toward Leo, and her eyes followed.

"Oh! He’s the one you were so desperate to take on as a disciple, right?" she said, loud enough for half the room to hear.

Rook’s face went instantly red. He smacked her lightly on the head. "Nobody wants that brat as a disciple. Stop making things up."

"Owww!" Cindy yelped, clutching her head with both hands. "Grandpa, I’m not a little kid anymore, stop hitting me!"

"Hmph. You’re twelve," Rook said flatly.

She huffed at him, clearly unimpressed, before her attention swung fully onto Leo. Her eyes narrowed with open suspicion. "Are you actually the famous blacksmith? The one from the world announcement?" Her whole expression radiated the particular wariness of a kid who absolutely was not going to be won over by a stranger offering candy—no matter how thoroughly her grandfather had already been charmed.

Leo smiled easily. "That’s me. I’ll forge you something beautiful once I’ve got some free time—good armor, maybe a nice buff or two attached."

He reached out and ruffled her hair the way he might have with a little sister.

"And honestly, thank you for everything—coming by my place with your grandfather that time, and relaying my message to him when I really needed it. I owe you one."

Whatever suspicion Cindy had been holding onto evaporated the instant Leo mentioned crafting her armor. Her eyes practically lit up with stars.

"Thank you, big brother!" she beamed.

Elly’s voice cut back in smoothly. "Master. The Foundation status now reads twelve members against the ten-member requirement. All twelve are fully registered."

Leo pulled up the notification himself to confirm.

[Ding~]

[Members 12/10.]

[Full membership: confirmed.]

[Proceed to the Mana Vein Chamber.]

Satisfied, Leo addressed the group. "Alright, everyone—plenty of time to get to know each other while we work. Ms. Elona’s already walked you through the general situation, so we’re heading to the vault now. Let’s move."

He stood and started toward the exit, and everyone fell in behind him. Cindy looked a little lost about what exactly was going on, but Elona gently took her hand and filled her in as they walked, keeping her close to the group.

...

The full guild made its way back into the tunnel, descending past the lower ring toward the deeper level below. The violet haze greeted them again, just as thick as it had been prior.

The new members struggled visibly against the pressure of it, while the veterans of the earlier trip barely reacted anymore, having already adjusted.

Sparks traced steady, pulsing lines along the seams of the black stone, current threading visibly through the old channels.

Shen took lead this time, following the runes he’d anchored at each junction during the first expedition, tracing their path back down. Yumi walked close behind him, her formation expertise keeping a careful eye on the structure around them.

The deeper they went, the thicker the charged air became, until stray arcs of electricity crackled visibly in the open space around them, impossible to ignore.

The group moved in tight formation. Cindy practically skipped along, eyes wide, cataloguing every wall and every stone they passed. At one point she tried to sneak Ash off Hugh’s shoulder, but the cub had its claws sunk so deep into his coat that no amount of tugging budged it an inch.

After several failed attempts, she gave up, pouting. The cub shot her a look of pure disdain for even trying.

She huffed at it, clearly annoyed. Elona leaned over, comforting. "Don’t take it personally. He’s just attached to Mr. Hugh—doesn’t warm up to anyone else easily."

"I thought he’d like me," Cindy said, genuinely a little wounded.

Elly’s hologram drifted closer to her. "I believe the appropriate term is ’munchkin’—when a new player insists on touching everything within reach."

"I’m not new! And are you seriously calling me names right now?"

"I’m simply classifying your behavior. Accurately."

"Hmph." Cindy turned her nose up and looked away.

Ahead of them, Hugh lifted his palm and tested the air. "It conducts even better than before. Noticeably so."

Ben, walking near Elona, ran a hand along the tunnel wall thoughtfully. "Who builds a fortress directly on top of a mana vein, anyway?"

Shen didn’t answer. Nobody did, really. The question just hung there, unresolved.

They reached the vault door once more.

Shen, being closest, tried pushing it the same way Leo had the first time. It didn’t budge an inch, no matter how hard he pressed.

Ben stepped in to help, adding his weight to the effort. Still nothing—the door remained as immovable as solid bedrock.

Everyone exchanged confused glances. Even Elly seemed momentarily stumped.

Then Leo stepped forward, and the moment his palm made contact with the surface, the door groaned to life, swinging open just as it had before.

Elly processed it almost instantly. "Master, it appears the gate only recognizes you specifically. No one else seems able to open it."

Realization spread across the group’s faces.

Leo nodded and stepped through first.

Inside, the static charge hung far heavier than before. Where it had barely disturbed anyone’s hair on the first visit, now everyone’s hair stood on end, floating like they’d all just touched a live wire.

The mana well still sat at the vault’s center, glowing like a great silver eye. Leo resisted the urge to activate his foresight this time—the ache from his last attempt hadn’t fully faded yet.

The group gathered around the well in a loose circle. Leo reached out again and pressed his palm flat against the silver surface.

The system responded immediately, same as before.

[Ding~]

[Ritual initiation: Confirmed.]

[All conditions satisfied.]

[Full membership: present.]

[Foundation activation beginning.]

The pond’s surface, which had been rippling constantly under the pressure of the ambient charge, went suddenly, eerily still.

For a moment, total silence.

Then thin threads of violet light began climbing the rim of the well, one after another, rising up out of the silver liquid below. The black stone around them began to hum, the sound resonating through ancient channels no one had even noticed were there, the vibration rolling out through the vault floor until everyone could feel it in the soles of their boots.

"That," Hugh said slowly, "does not look natural in the slightest."

Shen’s eyes narrowed as he took in the unfolding scene. "It looks like some kind of formation is activating."

Elly ran every analysis she had access to and came up empty. "Master... I have no data on this phenomenon whatsoever."

Section by section, the black stone structure lit up, thin seams of pale light spilling across walls and floor, tracing out the same ancient channels Shen had reinforced with his runes earlier.

Beyond the vault, across the entire span of the Crown’s Domain, the ambient sparking intensified in kind.

And then it hit Leo, a sudden, settling clarity washing over him.

The fortress hadn’t been built on top of the vein at all.

It had been built around it. Deliberately. From the ground up.

His fingers stayed pressed against the rim of the well, thin violet veins of light climbing steadily up his wrist. The well was drawing something out of him—not pain exactly, nothing that hurt—but a current, steady and searching, testing the shape of the connection between them.

[Ding~]

[Unknown interaction detected.]

Without warning, a column of violet-silver light erupted straight up out of the well, surging into the vault’s domed ceiling.

The lightning itself began to fold, gathering, curling into a shape.

A figure emerged from within it—a woman, ancient in bearing, chin lifted, gaze unhurried and utterly composed. Her features sharpened gradually as the storm around her settled, resolving into something calm, almost serene despite the raw energy still crackling at her edges.

She hovered above the well, suspended in the last dissolving threads of the light column, and looked down at the group gathered below her. Twelve people. A fortress reclaimed. A guild barely a few days old.

Her gaze swept slowly across the room, lingering briefly on the founders clustered nearest the well, before finally settling on Leo.

"Interesting," she said.

"The fortress still stands."

A pause, her gaze drifting toward the glowing well beneath her.

"And someone has finally awakened it."

The panel at the edge of Leo’s vision flickered, text stuttering at its edges before settling into place.
