Chapter 840: Feng Mu and the Second Prison Harbor Too Many Secrets
Chapter 840 -701: Feng Mu and the Second Prison Harbor Too Many Secrets
The ominous prison high walls, along with the iron door embedded in the center, slowly slide open to both sides with the low hum of the hydraulic device, revealing a passage flanked by high walls.
The blue and white car drives inside, its wheels crunching lightly across the ground.
Inside the car, Li Shang sits in the front passenger seat, gazing silently outside through the window.
Truth be told, this isn’t Li Shang’s first visit to the Second Prison, but past visits were hurried affairs, while this time, perhaps due to a different mindset or perhaps driven by an instinct, he observes the prison’s interior closely and carefully for the first time.
As he observes, a chill grips his heart.
No other reason, just too imposing.
This sense of imposition doesn’t just come from the standard prison features like high walls, electric grids, and iron windows, but an omnipresent tension that feels “alive.”
From the moment the vehicle enters the internal passage, every corridor corner and door checkpoint leading to different areas stand guard with a prison guard holding a gun.
They differ from the prison guards Li Shang is used to seeing at other prisons, those with loose uniforms, lazy stances, and wandering eyes.
Here, every guard has a meticulously ironed uniform with crisp edges, standing like spears welded onto the ground.
Li Shang racks his brains, finally finding an extremely incongruous yet exceedingly fitting adjective – high-spirited.
Prison?
High-spirited?
The combination of these words leaves Li Shang feeling an absurd sense of dissonance.
Moreover, what surprises Li Shang even more is that every guard encountered along the way, whether standing or patrolling, doesn’t show their real face.
On all their faces, a uniform mask of the same style.
The mask’s pattern isn’t complex, one could even say it’s minimalistic – pure white in color, smooth like an eggshell inside.
Only the eye and nose areas have holes to ensure no hindrance to vision or breathing.
At first glance, it somewhat resembles the Mask’s mask.
Quite frightening.
Only, Mask’s mask is made of bone, exuding primordial ferocity, while the prison guards’ masks, although Li Shang hasn’t touched it, judging by sight, seem to be stamped from metals like iron or aluminum, making it look more cold and orderly.
Li Shang and Chang Erbing are walking in the long corridor, guided by Guan Chong.
Guan Chong doesn’t use a mask to cover his face; covering up wouldn’t help, given the conspicuous metal frame still hanging, not fully recovered from a broken arm.
He casually hangs the mask tilted on one side of his head, revealing half of his face from the forehead down.
While leading them, he slightly turns his head to explain to the two:
“Second Prison has been extraordinarily busy lately; the Minister is handling some urgent official duties and can’t step away, so he specially instructed me to receive you two, hope you don’t mind.”
Li Shang and Chang Erbing are indifferent to this, or rather, their minds are full of various suspicions, leaving no room for other concerns.
Li Shang hasn’t spoken yet, and Chang Erbing can’t resist asking:
“What’s up with these masks? Why is everyone wearing them?”
Guan Chong seems to have expected their question, responding without turning his head, in a plain tone:
“Oh, this? It’s a directive from the Minister; it seems it’s to accompany the upcoming Octagonal Cage Beast Fighting plan greatly promoted by Mr. Wang, and some necessary preemptive actions are required.”
Guan Chong doesn’t elaborate any further.
The feeling Li Shang and the others get is that Guan Chong seems to have answered their question, yet seemed not to answer at all, the answer being full of imaginative room.
Octagonal Cage Beast Fighting plan?
Li Shang vaguely heard that Second Prison seemed to be preparing for a major project, with strong support from Member of Parliament Wang Xinfa.
But only now does he learn from Guan Chong about the plan’s exact name – Octagonal Cage Beast Fighting.
Sounds quite… sinister!
But what does this have to do with guards wearing masks?
Chang Erbing hears this, opens his mouth, wanting to inquire more details, but is stopped by Li Shang raising his hand.
As a Detective, even if not investigating a case, his mind turns more than others, commonly known as overthinking, belonging to the sacred body prone to brain supplements.
He stops Chang Erbing by saying:
“Since it’s an MP-supported plan, until it’s announced, it should remain confidential information, we shouldn’t probe idly.”
Chang Erbing instantly realizes, becoming aware he nearly violated a taboo, quickly shutting his mouth, not daring to say more.
Guan Chong remains silent, smiling slightly as he continues leading the way.
The prison’s internal structure is far more complex than imagined, with numerous forks like a maze.
Guan Chong does not take the two on a shortcut, purposefully taking them through a longer path, naturally ordained by Feng Mu.
Though Guan Chong does not understand the Minister’s intent in instructing him this way, his loyalty to the Minister is at 400%, wouldn’t ask a single word, only strictly executing.
Indeed, during this time working while sick, Guan Chong’s loyalty to Feng Mu secretly soars.
Feng Mu certainly feels Guan Chong’s growing loyalty towards him, much like wild grass in fields, can grow by itself without irrigation.
Feng Mu himself does not really understand either, he’s astonished, he hasn’t done anything.
Sometimes he reflects, if the world were filled with people like Guan Chong, it would surely be very peaceful.
