Chapter 81: Chapter 81: The Winner

The tournament ended on Thursday night.

Nobody slept.

At least nobody involved admitted to sleeping.

The final vote remained open until midnight.

By 11:43 PM, creator forums looked like emergency response centers.

Predictions.

Arguments.

Statistics.

Conspiracy theories.

One thread claimed Aoi secretly possessed three assistants.

Another claimed Haruki’s debt mechanic was influencing reality.

The internet continued being the internet.

Haruki avoided all of it.

Mostly.

He refreshed exactly four times.

A personal improvement.

Not a good improvement.

An improvement.

Yui sat across from him at the apartment table.

Reviewing training materials.

Pretending not to notice.

She noticed.

Of course she noticed.

At 11:57 PM, Haruki finally closed everything.

No more checking.

No more predictions.

The result already existed.

He simply hadn’t seen it yet.

The realization made waiting strangely easier.

Midnight arrived.

The platform homepage updated.

A single notification appeared.

Rookie Creator Tournament Final Results

Haruki stared.

Yui looked up.

The apartment became quiet.

The result loaded.

Winner

Aoi Fujimura

Reader Vote:

51.8%

Haruki Amamiya:

48.2%

The gap wasn’t huge.

It didn’t need to be.

A loss was a loss.

For several seconds neither spoke.

The room remained still.

No dramatic music.

No internal monologue.

No inspirational speech.

Just reality.

Aoi won.

Haruki leaned back in his chair.

The feeling surprised him.

Because disappointment existed.

Absolutely.

But devastation didn’t.

Not even close.

His phone immediately exploded.

Messages.

Calls.

Notifications.

Haruki ignored all of them.

Except one.

Aoi.

The message contained only three words.

Good match.

Haruki stared.

Then laughed.

Because somehow that irritated him more than victory would’ve.

He typed back.

I hate you.

Several seconds later:

Reasonable.

That made it worse.

Much worse.

Yui finally broke the silence.

"You okay?"

Simple question.

Haruki considered it honestly.

Then nodded.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"Ask me tomorrow."

Yui smiled.

Fair answer.

Very fair answer.

The next morning, the industry reaction began.

Publisher emails.

Meeting invitations.

Interview requests.

A surprising amount of attention for somebody who lost.

Haruki opened the first message.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The pattern emerged quickly.

Nobody cared that much about winning.

They cared about potential.

Exactly what Mizuno predicted.

At noon, Haruki entered a meeting room inside Yamashita Publishing.

His first real publisher discussion.

Not a contract.

Not yet.

A conversation.

The woman from the interview greeted him warmly.

Several others joined.

Editors.

Marketing staff.

Talent development.

The atmosphere felt professional.

Careful.

Measured.

Nobody promised anything.

Nobody needed to.

The discussion focused on:

Threadless Gate

production schedule

future projects

career goals

Then one editor asked a question.

"What happens if your current growth stalls?"

Haruki expected publishing questions.

Not that.

He paused.

Actually thought.

Then answered.

"I keep writing."

The editor smiled slightly.

"Most people say they’ll work harder."

A pause.

"That’s usually a warning sign."

Interesting.

No.

Stop.

The habit survived everything.

The meeting continued.

Then something unexpected happened.

A young man entered halfway through.

Late.

Completely relaxed.

Coffee in hand.

Several editors greeted him immediately.

Not politely.

Comfortably.

The difference stood out.

The newcomer looked around the room.

Then noticed Haruki.

"Oh."

A smile appeared.

"You’re Threadless Gate."

Not Haruki.

Not Amamiya.

Threadless Gate.

The manga.

Good.

Very good.

The young man sat down without hesitation.

No awkwardness.

No tension.

As if every room already belonged to him.

Haruki hated him immediately.

Not because he was rude.

Because he was effortlessly likable.

The worst type of rival.

One editor noticed.

"Haruki, this is Sora Tachibana."

The name meant nothing.

Then another editor added:

"His series crossed one million views last month."

The room shifted slightly.

Not visibly.

Socially.

Haruki felt it.

Everybody knew Sora.

Everybody liked Sora.

Sora seemed unaware.

Or worse.

Comfortable with it.

The creator extended a hand.

"Nice to meet you."

Haruki shook it.

Firm grip.

Easy smile.

Natural confidence.

Dangerous.

Very dangerous.

The conversation resumed.

Whenever Sora spoke, people listened.

Not because he demanded attention.

Because attention arrived naturally.

A completely different type of talent.

Aoi dominated through discipline.

Sora dominated through presence.

Haruki recognized the threat immediately.

Not an enemy.

Not a villain.

A problem.

A new one.

Later that evening, Haruki returned home exhausted.

Tournament finished.

Publisher meetings started.

New rival discovered.

The world refused to slow down.

Yui sat on the couch reading.

She looked up.

"How was it?"

Haruki dropped into a chair.

Then answered honestly.

"I think I met someone annoying."

Yui laughed.

"Publisher?"

"Worse."

A pause.

"Creator."

That got her attention.

Haruki explained.

The charisma.

The confidence.

The effortless popularity.

Yui listened quietly.

Then smiled.

"What?"

Her answer arrived immediately.

"You sound jealous."

Haruki opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Opened it again.

Nothing emerged.

Because she might be right.

For the first time in months, the feeling wasn’t directed toward Aoi.

Aoi’s success felt earned.

Predictable.

Understandable.

Sora felt different.

Unfair.

Which probably meant Haruki needed to understand him better.

The thought stayed with him long after midnight.

The tournament was over.

Aoi won.

Haruki lost.

Yet somehow the story felt larger than ever.

Because the tournament’s ending had not closed a door.

It had opened several.

And behind one of them stood Sora Tachibana.

Smiling.

Popular.

Successful.

Exactly the kind of rival Haruki didn’t know how to fight.
