Chapter 150: The Wedding
Chapter 150: Chapter 150: The Wedding
Haruki nearly missed his own wedding rehearsal because Interpol called first, and the sheer, absurd collision of those two facts told him everything he needed to know about the strange shape his life had become.
"They’re asking for a formal statement," Suzune explained over the phone, her voice carrying the particular calm efficiency she reserved for genuinely important developments. "International arrest warrants are being processed for both Ishikawa and Kobayashi. Your testimony about the initial threats would strengthen the case considerably."
"I’m getting married in four hours," Haruki said, staring at his half-buttoned dress shirt in the mirror, mildly disbelieving that this particular sentence had become something he actually needed to say out loud.
"I know. I told them that. They said the statement can wait until next week." A pause, then, warmer: "Go get married, Haruki. The case will still be there Monday."
He laughed, some of the tension easing from his shoulders, and finished dressing with hands that had finally, mercifully stopped shaking from the morning’s brief scare.
The wedding took place in a small garden hall on the outskirts of Tokyo, chosen after months of the same gentle disagreement that had characterized their entire engagement — Yui preferring somewhere intimate and quiet, Haruki initially assuming something larger was expected given how public his life had become, before finally, properly listening and choosing exactly what she’d wanted from the beginning.
Standing at the altar, watching the small gathering of people who’d shaped the last several years of his life settle into their seats, Haruki felt something steady and complete settle into his chest. Mizuno and Suzune sat together near the front, both in formal wear that looked slightly foreign on people he’d only ever seen in professional crisis mode. Kuroda sat beside Nakamura, the two of them sharing an easy, comfortable silence that hadn’t existed when Haruki first learned their history together. Sora had already started crying, loudly, despite the ceremony not having technically begun yet, while Rika sat beside him looking simultaneously embarrassed and fond. Aoi, Kenji, and Nanami occupied the next row, Arata beside them, all five looking genuinely happy in a way that still occasionally surprised Haruki given how many of them had first entered his life as rivals rather than friends.
Hayato sat near the back, having flown in specifically despite everything currently consuming his own life at Kanzaki Holdings, his presence a quiet reminder of exactly how far their complicated history had traveled since the days when his name alone had made Haruki’s stomach tighten with dread.
Then the music shifted, and Yui appeared at the far end of the aisle, and every careful thought Haruki had prepared about the significance of this moment simply evaporated, replaced entirely by the overwhelming, uncomplicated fact of her walking toward him.
She wore a simple dress, elegant without being ostentatious, exactly matching the quiet garden setting she’d chosen. Her expression, when their eyes finally met, carried the same steady warmth that had grounded him through every crisis of the past several years, undimmed by nerves or ceremony.
The vows passed in a blur that Haruki would only fully remember in fragments afterward — his own voice steadier than he expected, promising honesty above convenience, presence above perfection, the same lessons he’d spent years learning finally crystallizing into something he could speak aloud in front of everyone who mattered. Yui’s vows, when she spoke them, carried her characteristic directness, promising patience without enabling avoidance, support without erasing her own needs in the process, partnership built on mutual honesty rather than one person’s constant accommodation.
When they were finally pronounced married, the small gathering erupted into applause and, from Sora specifically, an embarrassing amount of continued crying, and Haruki pulled Yui into a kiss that felt like the culmination of every difficult, honest choice that had brought them to exactly this moment.
The reception afterward unfolded with the particular warm chaos of people who genuinely liked each other celebrating together — toasts that veered unpredictably between heartfelt and ridiculous, Takeda’s speech somehow managing both simultaneously within the same three minutes, Kuroda offering a brief, characteristically understated toast that nonetheless left several people visibly moved.
Near the end of the evening, as guests began drifting toward the exits, Hayato approached Haruki quietly, pulling him aside for a private moment amid the winding-down celebration.
"I wanted to tell you something before I head back," Hayato said. "The Kanzaki Holdings restructuring is finally complete. All three predatory subsidiaries dissolved properly, employee transitions handled fairly, the whole process finished exactly the way we planned it eighteen months ago."
"That’s incredible, Hayato. Genuinely."
"It is." Hayato smiled, something lighter in his expression than Haruki had seen in over a year. "I couldn’t have done it without everything your coalition taught me about handling this properly instead of just hiding it. I wanted you to know that on your wedding day specifically, because it felt important to actually say it rather than just assume you knew."
Haruki felt something warm settle into his chest alongside everything else the day had already given him. "Thank you for trusting us with it."
"Thank you for actually earning that trust, repeatedly, over years now." Hayato clasped his shoulder briefly. "Go enjoy your wedding. I’ve taken up enough of tonight’s business already."
Later, as the celebration finally wound down and guests dispersed into the cool evening air, Haruki found himself alone with Yui for the first time all day, both of them slightly exhausted, entirely happy, sitting together on a small bench overlooking the garden’s quiet pond.
"We’re actually married," Yui said, looking down at the ring on her finger with something like disbelief.
"We are." Haruki pulled her closer, the weight of the day settling into something peaceful rather than overwhelming. "Any regrets about the small ceremony? I know some people expected something bigger, given everything."
"Absolutely none," Yui said firmly. "This was exactly right. Small, honest, surrounded by people who actually mattered instead of people we felt obligated to impress." She looked up at him. "Speaking of honest — Interpol called you before the ceremony, didn’t they? I saw your expression when Suzune’s name came up."
He laughed, unsurprised she’d noticed despite everything else occupying her attention that morning. "International warrants are being processed for Ishikawa and Kobayashi. The investigation is finally moving forward properly."
"Good," Yui said simply. "But not tonight’s problem."
"Not tonight’s problem," he agreed, kissing her temple gently, the garden’s quiet stretching comfortably around them as evening settled fully into night.
Tomorrow would bring statements to Interpol, ongoing coalition work, the steady demands of a life that had never actually promised to become simple just because they’d survived its most dangerous Chapters. Season Two’s production continued. The Lantern Project’s work continued. Somewhere across international borders, two people who’d built a decade-long conspiracy on other people’s exploitation now found themselves running from consequences finally catching up to them.
But tonight belonged entirely to this — a quiet garden, a marriage built on years of hard-won honesty, and the steady, complete certainty that whatever difficulties still waited ahead, he wouldn’t be facing any of them alone anymore.
Not tonight. Not ever again, if he had any say in the matter.
And for the first time in longer than he could easily remember, that certainty felt like the truest thing he’d ever known.
