Endless Debt
Chapter 1570 - 90: Butcher’s Pit_2
Within seconds, all the believers lost their ability to resist and knelt down, even Melissa was not spared, falling down from the pillar.
Fortunately, someone had already fallen below, acting as a cushion, so Melissa’s fall wasn’t as painful.
With hazy and distorted consciousness, the instinct to survive made Melissa struggle to lift her head. She saw the Night Race moving through the fallen crowd, approaching the priest. One of them grabbed the priest’s head, seemingly saying something to him. After an eerie mocking laugh, the Night Race punched the priest in the abdomen.
Amidst a faint wail, Melissa saw the Night Race pick up a torch and throw it towards the stained glass. With a crisp shattering sound, the image collapsed, and flames sprouted.
As if in a hallucination, Melissa saw the blazing fire rise, with the broken sun eternally standing amidst the flames.
Melissa seemed able to imagine what exactly the sun was.
...
One by one, Bloodthirsty clad in Iron Armor dragged the prison carts, cramming a large number of Blood Citizens inside as if they were goods.
Devon stood among the prison carts, his expression extremely gloomy. He initially thought this was just a raid on these strange believers, but he did not expect it to evolve into a citywide capture.
The Blood Citizens in this area seemed to have all been captured, leaving only a few trembling in the ruins. Devon hoped Melissa could hide better.
"Have they gone mad with hunger? Do they intend to begin a bloody feast?"
Devon wondered, even if it was a clearing operation, there were too many Blood Citizens being captured this time.
One prison cart after another departed, with Devon following alongside. Under the hazy mist, he saw other areas of the old city also having prison carts leaving in groups. This was indeed a citywide capture.
Devon couldn’t raise any questions, and even if he did, no one would answer. He could only follow the orders of the Night Race, moving with the team, and they soon reached the edge of the old city.
Outside the city gate.
At the moment of stepping out of the city gate, Devon couldn’t describe his feelings. It was his second time crossing the city gate; the first time was when he was thrown into the old city.
In the increasingly thick mist, Devon saw flames igniting one after another. As he got closer, he saw a massive procession emerging from all directions in the fog.
Not only had the old city undergone a comprehensive capture, but other regions in the Land of Eternal Night faced the same situation. Some areas lacked enough prison carts, so they simply tied the Blood Citizens’ hands with ropes, linking them together in a long line, stretching into the unseen distance.
A strong sense of unease surged from Devon’s heart, feeling that something bad would happen. Devon also thought this might be an opportunity to escape, but recalling the strangeness of the Land of Eternal Night, he felt that the moment he left the team, he would be slaughtered by the Bloodthirsty.
"Devon?"
Suddenly, a familiar voice came from a prison cart beside him. Devon turned his head in confusion, seeing a thin figure squeeze through the Blood Citizens, poking out like a mouse.
Devon felt his heartbeat slow by half a beat, his whole body frozen in place.
"Me... Melissa?"
Looking at the girl in the prison cart, Devon couldn’t understand why she was here, or what she would face next.
Nervously, Devon walked over, wanting to do something, but seeing the heavy prison cage and the Bloodthirsty prowling around, he realized despairingly that he could do nothing.
"What bad luck, getting caught for no reason."
Melissa laughed foolishly as if she didn’t fully understand her situation, or maybe she did and had numbly accepted it.
"Had I known, I should’ve eaten more before heading out," Melissa looked around and continued, "If there’s any leftover Blood Tax, it’s all yours."
Devon’s eyes widened, his body trembled uncontrollably, as Melissa, with childlike excitement, continued speaking.
"By the way, Devon, I think I know what the sun is now."
...
Trick stood by the window, gazing down at the once majestic Royal City. In his memory, it was a dream of prosperity, sacred and solemn. Yet, the current scene was heart-wrenching.
Riddled with scars, with broken walls and ruins, the stone walls etched with the marks of swords and axes left by that war, the ruins burying the corpses long decayed over centuries.
"What are you looking at?"
A cold voice sounded from behind. Trick didn’t need to look back; just from the blood scent permeating the air, he could identify the person.
Trick raised his hand, pointing into the distance. The person stood beside him, following his direction, and saw a gigantic scar that cut through the walls encircling the Royal City.
It was as if a Demon God had once broken through that defense line, singing as it advanced along the fissure, turning the buildings along the way into ruins, extending all the way to a corner of the palace, causing much of it to collapse as well.
"Here, in the Dawn War a hundred years ago, it was he who breached the wall and led the enemy into the Royal City."
Trick clearly had a youthful face, but his voice was hoarse like an old man.
The person asked, "Oh... was it Serey?"
"Who else but that traitor would commit such atrocities?"
Mentioning Serey, Trick’s emotions visibly fluctuated. He silently clenched his fists, his heart filled with hatred.
Trick was one of the rare survivors of the Dawn War from the Night Race. After the defeat, he was imprisoned within the Land of Eternal Night, enduring the long passage of time.
