Endless Debt
Chapter 1564 - 86: Master of French Fries_3
"Hmm."
Hearing Bologue’s response, Palmer felt a bit sad for a moment. Clearly, it had nothing to do with him; clearly, there might be hundreds, thousands of years before this would happen. By then, who knows if even his grave would still exist, and whether the Clarks, the Order Bureau, or the Rhine Alliance would still be around.
Yet Palmer could still feel the same sadness.
"Ah... Doomed, the future is doomed," Palmer lamented, clutching his head in frustration. "You’re already such a bastard, stepping further into darkness is like bringing the Devil to this world!"
"The Devil is already in this world!"
Bologue couldn’t help but laugh. Palmer’s way of thinking was always so peculiar; he wasn’t worried about the upcoming actions against the Rebellious Royal Court, but rather worried about a future that could not be more distant.
"Don’t be anxious, Palmer," Bologue said, "it’s not as hopeless as it seems."
"How so?"
"Just like Aisha," Bologue explained, "even as she fades away, she still clings to the beauty of the past and loves this world.
In Olivia’s tale, that flower field, Aisha knew she could not return to that time, but if even this flower field couldn’t be preserved, then there would be nothing left to witness the authenticity of her memories."
Bologue’s voice grew firm, "Similarly, I will cherish this fleeting time; it will become like a stone carved into my heart, reminding me who I should become and what I should do."
He spoke, patting Palmer’s shoulder, "Even if by then you all are long gone, as long as I close my eyes, I can see you again."
Palmer looked at Bologue with an expression that was half understood, half puzzled, as though he understood, yet not quite. Then he shuddered abruptly, pulling away from Bologue’s hand.
"Wow, your words sound so cheesy, and you make it sound like I’m already dead."
"Pretty much, in the eyes of the Undead, it’s pretty much the same."
Bologue intentionally elongated the last syllable, teasing Palmer, "Ah, poor Palmer, you’ll be dead in no more than another hundred years."
As Palmer listened to Bologue’s fake sobbing, he felt nauseous.
"Get lost, get lost."
Palmer stood up, keeping a distance from Bologue.
Bologue laughed loudly, glanced at the parking lot, as Ether silently surged, and after a fierce meow, a dirty stray cat was dragged out from under the car by the Power of Command. It panicked, its fur standing on end.
Tearing open the bag, Bologue scattered fries on the ground and cautiously placed the stray cat down. It hissed at Bologue while eyeing the steaming food, and after a brief struggle, it devoured them ravenously.
"Let’s go, Palmer. At the end of the day, it’s all about the future."
Bologue collected his emotions and continued, "As a firm pragmatist, I only care about the present."
...
Olivia stood on the rooftop, gazing at the bustling, illuminated city. She had to admit, compared to the dark Land of Eternal Night from her childhood memories, she preferred the world today, even though there was no place for her in it.
"Oh? You actually discovered this place."
Sai Zong pushed open the door and walked up from the staircase, glanced at the rooftop cluttered with debris, and then looked at Olivia standing on the edge.
"Those folks used to love barbecue on this rooftop, drinking from dusk till dawn, disturbing the peace and not cleaning up. After several warnings from the Order Bureau, I found it troublesome, so I closed it off, and few have come since."
Sai Zong rummaged through the clutter, dragged out two dust-covered chairs, intending to move them beside Olivia, but seeing her back, he only picked up one and sat behind her, gazing with her at the city’s nightscape.
"Where’s Serey?"
"He went back, back to his room."
Sai Zong replied calmly, seeming to have recovered from his anger, "I remember his room has many paintings, among them should be your mother’s."
Olivia said coldly, "There are other women’s too."
Sai Zong raised an eyebrow, having grown accustomed to Serey’s flirtatious nature, he had almost forgotten this aspect.
"How did the talk go?"
"So-so," Sai Zong admitted, "he can face the past now, but only face the past."
"Coward."
Olivia’s tone remained cold as she closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and sighed heavily.
"I’m scared, I feel my strength alone isn’t enough to resolve this crisis, even with help from the Order Bureau."
Recalling the Eternal Night Empire, countless thoughts swarmed in, setting aside the supreme Night King, the mere presence of the Regent King filled Olivia with anguish.
"What do you think?" Olivia asked, "How do you plan to act, just sit back and wait for death?"
"Me? I’m still hesitating," Sai Zong contemplated, "My members are a bunch of slackers who detest worldly conflict; I really don’t want to force them back onto the battlefield."
"But if you don’t face war, war will come find you."
"Yes, it’s really a dilemma."
Sai Zong crossed his legs, gazing at the towering buildings; a hundred years ago he hadn’t imagined the world today would develop into this form.
"Even if I force them, or even if they’re willing to volunteer for battle, they still need a leader, and I clearly cannot take on that role," Sai Zong foresaw, "when war breaks out, there are works more important than leadership waiting for me."
At this, Sai Zong unconsciously clenched his fists as if grasping an invisible weapon, ready to slash at an unseen enemy.
"You want Serey to lead them? Indeed, Serey is the one who understands the Eternal Night Empire the most, if he can destroy it once, he can destroy it again," Olivia said and shook her head, "but back then, he accomplished so much, yet he still lacked the courage to face his father, do you think he can do it now?"
"No," Sai Zong decisively said, "he’s already drowned in alcohol, turned into a wreck."
Olivia sneered.
"But outside of Serey, I really can’t think of a second candidate. You certainly have some qualifications, but to shake such a behemoth, you’re still lacking by quite a bit."
Sai Zong meant not just the Tier of Olivia, but also the purity of her bloodline. After the Night King’s second Blood Donation, the Regent King had become an existence superior to Olivia. Only the final Night Race Lord, Serey, could stand a chance against him.
Olivia turned to stare at Sai Zong; his gaze did not evade hers. Within his deep eyes lay countless figures of slaughter, living and dying in an eternal cycle.
"I’m leaving."
Suddenly, Olivia made a decision; she was so decisive, standing at the edge of the rooftop, as if she would leap into the crowd in the next moment.
"Where are you going?"
"To the Land of Eternal Night, to continue the work my mother left unfinished," Olivia said, revealing the Bloodthirsty Dagger in her hand, "to avenge her, to kill the real culprit."
"You have no chance of winning."
"I know," Olivia said as she threw the weapon away, "so I’ll leave this weapon to Serey."
The Bloodthirsty Dagger fell, piercing straight into the ground. Sai Zong examined the weapon, finding it exceptionally perfect, surpassing the majority of his collection.
Olivia’s heart wavered for a moment. Since the fall of the Eternal Night Empire, she had never parted with this weapon; now, abandoning it felt like abandoning a part of herself.
Her soft heart strengthened, Olivia understood this wasn’t just about correcting her mistakes, avenging Aisha, but completely eliminating this hidden threat to mankind... for the world she loved.
Olivia suddenly felt less tense, surprisingly relaxed inside, as if her whole being had become feather-light.
She asked, "Do you think I’ll be the driving force for Serey to become courageous?"
Sai Zong didn’t answer, only carefully packed away the Bloodthirsty Dagger, watching Olivia leap down, transforming into a shadow, disappearing into the sea of people, without a trace.
