Endless Debt
Chapter 1561 - 85: The Value of Life (4)
No one knew what Serey was thinking at that time, not even Serey himself could understand, but when the first ray of sunlight seared Serey’s hand, bringing a piercing pain, Serey’s wandering mind finally cleared.
For the Night Race, that was an unbearable agony, not just from physical sensation, but also from absolute psychological fear, and Serey almost screamed out.
In the pain, he thought of Aisha, thought of what Aisha had gone through.
"You really are a brave person..." Serey repeated in collapse, "I’m sorry, I’m sorry."
Serey still couldn’t summon the courage, just like at the end of the Dawn War, he didn’t dare face his father, nor dare to embrace the long-lost sunlight; he fled back into the darkness like a rat aflame.
...
"That’s how the story goes," Serey tried to calm his emotions, "After that, I met you, came to this ghostly place, day after day, until today."
"Aisha used her self-sacrifice to awaken your conscience and love for the world?" Sai Zong couldn’t help but sigh, "It’s truly surprising, probably no one expected that the fate of the world was once decided by such a person."
"Conscience? Love for the world? No, no, no, Sai Zong, what are you talking about?"
Serey denied repeatedly, he had a very clear understanding of himself, "You seem to be making me out to be a good person who has found his way back? How could that be? I’m just scum, a villain. I overthrew the Eternal Night Empire, not for such grand ideals."
"Then what was it for?"
"Revenge," Serey said sincerely, "It’s simple, just revenge."
Sai Zong was somewhat incredulous, "Oh? Then can I understand it as you did all this for a woman?"
"Pretty much, no lofty ideals, no sudden realizations, I was just seeking revenge."
Serey paused, unable to resist covering his face, "Am I not ridiculous, Sai Zong? Cowardly, timid, scum, villain... doing such absurd things for a woman, it sounds downright stupid."
He tried his best to mock himself, attempting to make himself seem less pathetic, but Serey’s tone still softened, filled with nostalgia.
"Maybe... maybe I truly fell in love with her."
Serey dropped his hand, looked up, and said uncertainly, "Yeah, perhaps I really did fall in love with this woman, feeling her joys and sorrows."
"Her departure was intolerable for me, unbearable... I needed to vent these emotions, so I went ahead and did it."
Serey murmured, "But I still can’t let go, whenever I think, if I could have mustered the courage to do all this before Aisha left, maybe everything would be different."
"If only I could have summoned the courage earlier... taken on the responsibility sooner..."
Serey took a deep breath, trying to force a carefree smile, "Let’s talk about something happy, I must say, compared to the Eternal Night Empire, I really like the world as it is now."
He began to understand Aisha’s thoughts, "People in the world are like impatient beings with short lives, living in a hustle, racking their brains to leave something behind in this world before Death God catches up with them, to prove they existed."
Serey thought of Palmer and the story he told about Ewen, in that disaster, until the end, Ewen never sought a chance to survive, but stubbornly finished writing his story.
Life will always come to an end, but the value it creates will forever remain in this world.
"So, every day there are all sorts of new things appearing, films, novels, stage plays, music... all containing the values of vivid individuals."
Serey was awestruck by all this, involuntarily sighing, "I still don’t know the meaning of life, nor what kind of value to pursue, but at that moment, I suddenly felt that if I couldn’t find it myself, I might as well follow her path."
Serey vigorously stretched his body, a series of light sounds emanating from within.
"In other words, I do have a legitimate, correct reason."
Serey eagerly repeated.
"For love and peace."
