Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 188 - 177: Can a Leader Murder Someone in Secret?
Chapter 188: Chapter 177: Can a Leader Murder Someone in Secret?
The Cruise Ship Theater.
Aboard the Royal Caribbean International Cruise, the sheer number of entertainment facilities was dazzling.
However, to conserve power, Yu Dong had always instructed the engineers to shut off the electricity in most areas.
Power was usually concentrated in the third-floor dining area, the fourth-floor promenade, and the twelfth-floor accommodation deck.
The ship’s theater was also on the fourth floor. Tonight, after dinner and with the three leaders’ approval, a family-friendly movie was being shown.
This rare form of entertainment drew nearly everyone to attend.
Everyone was enjoying themselves, and hearty laughter erupted from the theater from time to time.
Meanwhile, the three leaders of the cruise ship were holding a meeting in a small conference room on the third floor.
Yu Dong, Wang Dingbei, and Lin Mo sat in a triangle formation.
Yu Dong had called this meeting; the other two had originally planned on watching the movie.
Wang Dingbei glanced at his watch. "Yu Dong, if you can wrap this up quickly, we can still catch the second half."
Lin Mo offered a faint smile, waiting quietly for Yu Dong to speak.
Yu Dong’s expression was grim.
"First, our ten-day assault plan was a success. We’ve cleared our way to the designated location, the Xiangti Bay Community, and secured most of the six-kilometer stretch of Binhai Avenue. We also rescued a large number of people and brought them onto our ship to join us. Not a single person died during the operation. This is an outstanding achievement."
The other two looked at him, waiting for him to get to the real issue.
"However, on the last day—today—we created a potential threat: Lin Xiaojun’s team from Xiangti Bay. I can tell you with certainty that the true leader of that squad is Lin Xiaojun. They are a group that glorifies violence and the law of the jungle. They will become a huge danger to our cruise ship."
"In my previous two rebirths, I was at the Xiangti Bay Community. Both times, I fought intense battles with Lin Xiaojun. He’s the kind of person who will do anything for personal gain—dueling, murder, robbery—he’s capable of any evil."
"Zhao Yun and the other three men are most likely his accomplices. As for Yang Yi... I don’t think she told the truth. She’s hiding something from us. I’ve already sent Zhao Wenjie to question her. Hopefully, we’ll get a real answer soon."
"During the day, we were in a hurry to take the Bihai Building District. Since the six of them didn’t slip up, we temporarily brought them all back. I’ve now arranged for someone to lock the six of them in their rooms under some pretext."
"The three of us must eliminate this problem tonight. We cannot allow Lin Xiaojun’s team to jeopardize the safety of our ship."
"You both know me. I never assume the worst of people and I’m willing to give everyone a chance. But... for a person like Lin Xiaojun, I recommend direct physical elimination. He will absolutely commit evil again. I cannot give him that opportunity."
"That is all. This is why I called this urgent meeting."
After speaking, Yu Dong looked at the other two.
As Wang Dingbei listened, he seemed to realize something and fell into deep thought...
Lin Mo looked at Yu Dong, a peculiar light in her eyes.
"Yu Dong, this is the first time I’ve seen you so emotional... It seems this Lin Xiaojun holds a terrifying place in your memory."
"Yes. My first team died at his hands. I was also killed by zombies because I was trying to kill him..."
Fearing the other two didn’t grasp the gravity of the situation, Yu Dong recounted the stories of his struggles against Lin Xiaojun’s team from his two previous lives.
Wang Dingbei remained silent, simply taking out his silver lighter and spinning it over and over.
"Wang, say something! Why are you acting so profound? This should be the easiest kind of judgment for you to make, right?" Yu Dong said, growing anxious as he looked at Wang Dingbei.
"Don’t rush me. I’m thinking... thinking about something. I’ve almost got it. You two talk first."
Since Wang Dingbei was stepping back from the discussion for now, Lin Mo took the lead.
"I see... No wonder you hold such hostility toward him. To face such extreme human evil, and for two lifetimes in a row... it would be hard for anyone to remain calm. So, Yu Dong, how do you want us to cooperate with you?"
"It’s simple. We get our story straight. In a little while, we get the guards watching him to leave. I’ll go in and put a bullet in him. Then, while no one’s looking, we dispose of the body. We saved hundreds of people today; no one is going to care about some nobody."
Pure murderous intent filled Yu Dong’s eyes.
He had Lin Xiaojun locked up precisely so he could eliminate him tonight and prevent him from ever appearing in public again.
Lin Mo studied Yu Dong and asked, "Since you planned to kill him, why didn’t you just do it during the day?"
"The forty-six members of the combat team were watching. Wang and I didn’t catch him red-handed, and the room was cleaned up perfectly. If I just shot him... they’d all be shocked. They’d think I was crazy."
"You see, Yu Dong? You yourself know this is wrong. A leader who can kill someone at will can never command respect."
"That’s why I chose to bring him back and kill him secretly. It minimizes the impact and eliminates the threat. I just need to be clear with you two so you don’t mistake me for some kind of villain."
After all, Lin Xiaojun’s group hadn’t shown any flaws today; they had even acted quite obediently. If he didn’t already know the man’s true nature from his rebirths, he might have even given them a "Best Team" award.
Lin Mo thought for a moment, tapping two slender fingers on the table.
Officer Wang glanced at Yu Dong, then went back to his thoughts, which left Yu Dong speechless with frustration.
"Wang, if you don’t speak up, the two of us will vote and go take care of him. Don’t come looking for me later saying I didn’t tell you."
"Hold on. I’m thinking about something very important. Much more important than him."
Lin Mo saw that Officer Wang was still not speaking, but right now... Yu Dong’s proposal was very dangerous.
"Yu Dong, you can’t completely erase the traces of a murder. If Lin Xiaojun suddenly disappears, his friends will look for him. They’ll naturally start asking around the ship. Then what? Will you kill the other five as well? And if you kill all of them... do you think the forty-six combat team members won’t notice? How will they see you then? As a leader who resorts to assassinations? How can you lead the team after that?"
Yu Dong’s brows furrowed. "Lin Mo, are you opposing me?"
Lin Mo could see that Yu Dong’s state of mind was already becoming unstable.
’This is a symptom of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. An extreme sensitivity to an unforgettable event, which causes one to magnify the current situation. Yu Dong has mild symptoms of it.’
As a military psychologist, she had seen this condition often. She looked at Yu Dong’s forehead and said softly,
"Yu Dong, I’m not opposing you. I’m trying to protect your authority in our cruise ship base and preserve the legitimacy of the power you hold."
"If you were still in the Xiangti Bay Community with a small team of a few people you know inside and out, you could certainly put a bullet in him. They all trust you."
"But now you’re a leader on a cruise ship with over two hundred pairs of eyes watching you. You can’t do this."
"If you truly insist on going through with this, the only outcome will be that Officer Wang and I will be forced to arrest you."
