Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 158 - 150: Huang Has Changed
Chapter 158: Chapter 150: Huang Has Changed
Yu Dong didn’t rush to make a decision. After all, they had prepared enough supplies over there for ten people for three months. Now, with only the lawyer left... those supplies would last much longer.
The research institute’s facilities were all well-equipped. For the first few months, at least, there was no need to worry about him.
’The only potential things to worry about... are Xufeng and the other zombies. We can’t let them get out. There are also the few staff members at the institute—if they turn into zombies, that’ll be a problem for a lone lawyer.’
Yu Dong watched the real-time surveillance footage on Qiao Ping’s phone for a bit and saw Lawyer Ji stealthily open the door to the negative pressure lab. He successfully got out, closed the heavy door again to completely seal Xufeng and the others inside, and then grabbed his things from the doorway.
’Alright, nicely done.’
Yu Dong called the lawyer.
"Lawyer Ji, congratulations on making it out alive... I suggest you stay in the living quarters of the research institute. Don’t wander around, and don’t go outside. Use your supplies to hold out for a while. Once I’m freed up... I’ll come and rescue you."
After hanging up, Yu Dong temporarily put Lawyer Ji’s situation out of his mind. Compared to that ’lone survivor’ situation over there, things on the cruise ship were clearly more complicated.
With the help of everyone on the ship, all the survivors made it into the cabins.
Cai Hong was just as Captain Chen Guangzong had said; though he complained a lot, he was very efficient when it was time to work.
He helped Officer Wang get everyone settled on Deck 12, distributed rooms and key cards, and even arranged for the chefs to bring out some instant food so everyone could have a full meal.
Everything proceeded in an orderly and smooth fashion.
After finishing his call, Yu Dong came down to take a look.
However, they didn’t have much control over the process...
Officer Wang was in charge of maintaining order, while the crew handled distribution and supplies.
They had enough hands on deck.
There wasn’t much left for Yu Dong’s group to do.
Fortunately, many of the survivors who came aboard chose to come over to say a few words to Yu Dong and thank him.
At least everyone was clear on who had saved them.
Yu Dong found some comfort in that.
After Jiang Cheng got his key card, he brought Tian Hui and Lin Cong over to Yu Dong.
The three of them looked at Yu Dong’s group with puzzled expressions.
"Excuse me... do we know you? Why did you go to such specific lengths to rescue the three of us?"
Jiang Cheng took the lead in asking. In fact, the three of them had woken up when Yu Dong was setting the fire and hoisting the shipping container. They had been secretly talking, trying to figure out the reason for their kidnapping.
It wasn’t until Zhou let them out and they saw the field of charred zombie corpses outside that they realized... this was all done specifically to save them.
They found this very strange. But why?
’They haven’t gotten thin from hunger yet,’ Yu Dong thought, looking at the three of them. ’Maybe it’s because they slept all day, but they seem to be in much better shape this time around.’
"I do know you, but you don’t know me yet... We can talk more later when there’s time. If you’re willing, you can come stay with us on Deck 16."
Yu Dong extended the invitation warmly.
’Compared to the total strangers out there, I’ve at least interacted with these three before. They’re more trustworthy, so it’s worth trying to recruit them now.’
Jiang Cheng glanced at Officer Wang and the crew members handling everything, then hesitated for a moment.
"Thank you, but we’ll stay here for now. We can have a proper chat when there’s time. We’re very grateful for your help."
Lin Cong patted his chest and declared, "You saved my life. If there’s ever anything I can do for you in the future, just say the word!"
Tian Hui, on the other hand, seemed a little afraid of Yu Dong’s group.
"Thank you..."
With that, the three of them returned to their respective rooms.
None of them chose to join Yu Dong’s team.
After the trio was out of earshot, Yan Yikai grumbled.
"What’s with the cold shoulder from those three! Shouldn’t they be trying to cozy up to us? How can they just mumble ’thanks’ and leave it at that? And that woman... she was looking at us like we’re the bad guys. What’s she thinking at her age? Is she having some kind of damsel-in-distress fantasy or something???"
"It’s normal for a woman to be scared when facing the unknown. As men, we should give them some slack and not get too hung up on it..."
"Wen Jie, reel it in." Yu Dong knew who had spoken without even turning around.
Zhao Wenjie recalled what Yu Dong had said a few days ago, and his expression turned slightly awkward.
He had blurted out his thoughts without thinking...
Zhao Youcai sneered. "I could care less about the others, but we went out of our way to drive and save those three. If they’re going to be that ungrateful... I’m starting to think this world really does deserve to end."
Yu Dong chuckled.
"Don’t be so impatient, Youcai. Give them some time to process things... When something this big happens, a lot of things only become clear after you sleep on it."
"Dongzi, it’s no wonder you’re so calm after dying a few times..." Ever since Zhou Jian Country had become a believer, the more he looked at Yu Dong, the more he felt that Reincarnator vibe.
The more he looked, the more he saw it.
This gave rise to a crazy idea in Zhou’s mind...
"Hey! Look! Is that... Lin Zhixue! It’s Lin Zhixue, isn’t it?"
Huang Zhiqiang pointed at a beautiful girl who had just gotten her key card and was heading to her room, his face alight with excitement.
However, two men were following behind Lin Zhixue. They escorted her all the way to her door before reluctantly departing.
"Huh? Didn’t she get off the ship a long time ago? What’s she doing here?"
Zhao Youcai also recognized the starlet. ’After all,’ he thought, ’I once figured that hooking up with her after the apocalypse... would have been an acceptable outcome.’
But he was all about Xia Yao now, so he didn’t really have those kinds of thoughts anymore.
"Maybe she had business that kept her in Yanhai City... She was probably watching the commotion outside and just happened to get rescued."
She was the familiar face Yu Dong had seen earlier.
After all, a good-looking girl in her twenties with the aura of a celebrity was very recognizable.
At this moment, Huang Zhiqiang was brimming with excitement.
"Dongzi, what if... what if Lin Zhixue finds out I indirectly saved her and falls hopelessly in love with me?"
Yu Dong: "..."
"Why are you all looking at me like that? I’m the Reincarnator’s... die-hard roommate, at least! In ancient times, I’d be a figure like Wei Zheng!"
Zhao Youcai said, "You seem more like Wei Zhongxian to me."
"That’s still the Lord of Nine Thousand Years! That has prestige! I’ve decided, Dongzi... she’s the one!"
"Uh... what about your wife? She’s pregnant."
"That’s obviously someone else’s kid! I refuse to raise another man’s child! Chunan’s not going to be the sucker for that! The me you met in your past life definitely wasn’t the real me!"
Huang Zhiqiang’s behavior had completely changed this time around.
It surprised Yu Dong quite a bit, but on second thought, he could understand.
In the last life, Huang had no choices. In this one... he had too many.
Besides, that Lin Zhixue really was quite beautiful.
’From a neutral observer’s standpoint,’ Yu Dong thought, ’her looks and aura are top-tier, on par with Liu Ye’ye’s or Shen Xinyi’s.’
"Dongzi, this time, you have to be my wingman."
"No problem."
