Dungeon Crafter

Chapter 44: A Body at Last

  • Next Chapter

Zion went through Floor 3 one final time before activating it.

He checked the boulder trigger first, then moved through the lower corridors to make sure none of the pressure plates overlapped in ways he hadn’t intended.

The dart mechanisms remained hidden behind the wall carvings, the serpent pit was sealed beneath the Glittering Treasure Chest chamber, and the Shadow Panther continued slipping between the darker sections of the tomb as though it already belonged there.

Everything seemed to be working.

Zion returned his attention to the floor panel and hovered over the activation option for a moment. Floor 1 had mostly been an experiment. Floor 2 had been his first real attempt at building around party weaknesses.

Floor 3 felt different.

He had planned the terrain around the traps, the traps around the flow of the floor, the rewards around exploration, and the boss around unpredictability.

Not perfectly, of course. Half the concept only existed because he had found traps on sale. But the final result still felt more intentional than anything he had built so far.

He looked over the tomb one last time, then activated it.

[Floor 3 activated.]

Before he could close the panel, another message appeared.

[Floor Completion Bonus awarded.]

[+500 Essence]

Zion immediately checked his balance.

That was enough to push him comfortably past six thousand. He had barely finished appreciating that when another notification replaced the first.

[Dungeon Qualification Updated.]

[Three functional floors completed.]

[Your dungeon now qualifies as a Beginner Dungeon.]

He stared at the message.

"Beginner?"

He wasn’t sure whether to feel accomplished or insulted.

Another window opened before he could decide.

[New System Feature Unlocked.]

[Dungeon Network]

1

[Connect with registered Dungeon Lords.]

1

[View rankings, dungeon activity, regional standings, and public discussion channels.]

That caught his attention immediately.

Other Dungeon Lords.

Until now, Zion had known they existed mostly because the system implied it. There were rankings, dungeon classifications, rules, and mechanics that would make very little sense if he were the only one.

This was different. The Dungeon Network meant he could actually see them. Possibly talk to them.

More importantly, he could finally see what other dungeons were doing.

Zion opened the new option. Another notification appeared directly over it.

He frowned.

"What now?"

[Form Evolution Available.]

The Dungeon Network stopped mattering almost instantly.

A new panel expanded in front of him.

[Current Form: Lesser Dungeon Skull]

[Growth requirements fulfilled.]

[Select Evolution Path.]

Three options appeared beneath it.

[Large Spectral Skeleton Head]

[Lesser Skeleton]

1

[Dragon Skull]

Zion studied the choices for several seconds before opening the first.

A much larger version of his current skull appeared in the preview, except this one floated several feet above the ground while pale blue fire burned inside its eye sockets. Ghostly energy drifted from the back of the skull whenever it moved, giving the entire thing a much more threatening appearance than his current form.

Zion rotated the preview. "That is extremely cool."

The description mentioned improved magical affinity, greater intimidation, limited levitation, and increased resistance to physical damage.

It was also still a head. A much better head, admittedly. But still a head.

He reluctantly moved to the next option.

[Lesser Skeleton]

The preview showed an ordinary humanoid skeleton.

No glowing eyes. No dramatic aura. No armor. No floating blue fire.

Just bones held together by dungeon energy. Zion stared at it much longer than he had stared at the Spectral Head.

It had arms.

It had legs.

Hands, actual hands. And somehow that felt very appealing.

He opened the description.

[Lesser Skeleton]

A basic skeletal body with minimal physical capability.

Provides full humanoid mobility.

1

Low durability.

Low physical strength.

Expanded equipment compatibility.

Zion barely cared about the rest. Full humanoid mobility was already enough. He could walk. He could pick things up. He could leave the throne...

He forced himself to check the third option before making a decision.

[Dragon Skull]

The preview showed the enormous skull of some horned reptilian creature, with long teeth and heavy bone ridges running above the eye sockets.

Zion liked it immediately. The description was even better.

High structural durability.

Improved bite strength.

Innate fear effect.

Enhanced resistance to fire and impact.

Unfortunately, it also had no body.

He looked between the three options again. The Large Spectral Skeleton Head was easily the most dramatic. The Dragon Skull looked powerful enough that he could already imagine it sitting on the throne with enormous horns curling behind him.

Then he looked back at the Lesser Skeleton. It was objectively the least impressive option.

Zion selected it.

"I want hands."

A warning appeared before the selection could be confirmed.

[Confirm Evolution: Lesser Skeleton?]

[Warning: Form evolution will reset all current form-based attributes to Level 1.]

1

[New Level Cap: 20]

He stopped and read the warning again. "All of them?"

His current attributes weren’t impressive to begin with, so the actual loss didn’t matter much. The implication did. If evolving into a new form reset the stats tied to the old one, then spending large amounts of essence increasing those stats seemed even less appealing than before.

He had already suspected that personal upgrades were a poor investment compared to building the dungeon, but this made the problem much clearer.

What was the point of pouring essence into a form that might eventually be replaced?

He could spend hundreds or thousands improving his current body only for another evolution to appear later and send him straight back to Level 1.

Zion looked away from the warning and shifted his attention through the dungeon. Floors didn’t reset when he evolved. Traps didn’t disappear. Monsters remained.

Everything he built stayed between him and the entrance.

His body apparently didn’t. That made the decision easy.

"Definitely not wasting essence on this."

At least not until he understood the system better.

Zion confirmed the evolution. For a moment, nothing happened. Then blue light spread across his skull.

It began around the crown and moved downward, wrapping around the bone in thin glowing strands before spilling over the edge of the throne.

Zion felt pressure beneath him in places where nothing had existed before, followed by an unfamiliar sense of weight.

The sensation moved downward. A spine formed beneath his skull.

Then shoulders, arms, hands, ribs, a pelvis, and legs. The blue light brightened until the throne room disappeared behind it, then faded almost as quickly.

He sat on the throne. Except the throne suddenly felt much larger.

He looked down. A plain skeletal body rested beneath his skull. For several seconds, he simply stared.

Then he lifted his right arm. The bones moved.

Zion raised it higher and bent the elbow experimentally before turning his wrist. His hand followed every movement.

He opened his fingers. Closed them. Opened them again.

Five pale bones moved exactly when he wanted them to.

"I have fingers."

Zion spent another few seconds moving each one individually, watching the joints bend and straighten before his attention finally dropped toward his legs.

Two skeletal feet rested against the base of the throne. He leaned forward. The movement felt strange, but possible.

He placed both hands against the armrests and pushed. His legs straightened beneath him.

For one glorious second, Zion stood. Then his weight shifted too far forward.

His knees folded in a direction he hadn’t expected, and Zion pitched off the throne before hitting the stone floor in a clattering pile of bones.

The throne room went quiet.

Zion remained there for several seconds before one skeletal hand slowly lifted from the floor.

"Still worth it."
