Chapter 334: A Perfect World.
Chapter 334: A Perfect World.
Reynara stood in the rain, letting it soak her fur. Her tails stopped moving as she just stayed silent and observed.
And Kael saw it.
That was the moment it began.
The moment everything changed.
The scene changed again.
It was the day, the temple garden was quiet. There was no wind, the sky above was grey, clouds pressing low, casting a pale light on the stone floor.
Reynara waited.
Her nine tails lay motionless behind her, resting on the cold earth. Her purple eyes, usually calm and soft, now held a shadow.
Then, small, fast, and light footsteps echoed down the path.
A little Kitsune girl that Kael recognized—Luna—ran in, ears perked with hope.
Her eyes searched wildly until they found Reynara.
“Lady Reynara!”
She called out, breathless.
“Is… is he awake? Can I see him?”
Reynara didn’t answer.
Luna blinked.
Her excitement faltered.
“Is he okay…?”
She questioned, her heart squeezing tightly.
But—
Silence.
Reynara remained silent.
“Lady Reynara…”
Luna tried calling, and suddenly Reynara slowly turned, still kneeling by the garden’s edge.
“I’m sorry, Luna,”
She said quietly.
Her voice didn’t tremble—but her tails did.
Luna froze. Her ears flattened, her heart thudded so loud, she felt dizzy. It was the first time Kael had seen such an expression on the always-smiling Luna, and it pained him.
This, however, was only the beginning.
“…No.”
Luna’s voice cracked.
“I did everything I could. I tried every healing art I know. But his soul… it slipped away before dawn.”
Reynara muttered lightly.
“No…”
Luna whispered again.
“No, that’s not… that’s not…”
She shook her head furiously, taking a step back.
“You said he’d be okay! You said if I gave him to you, you’d save him!”
“I believed I could.”
Reynara lowered her gaze.
Luna’s lips trembled.
“I trusted you!”
“…”
Reynara said nothing.
“I—I gave him to you because you said it would be alright!”
The little Kitsune shouted.
“He promised me! H-he said we’d go to the Lantern Festival this year! That we’d light a floating candle just for Mama!”
Tears began streaming down her cheeks.
“He held my hand and said I didn’t have to cry anymore because he’d always be there! He was all I had! He was the only one who stayed when everyone else left!”
Her legs gave out as she collapsed on the cold stone. The sight pained Kael. For a moment, he wanted to go and catch her, but he knew he couldn’t do that.
“Why did he die!? Why!? Why didn’t you save him!?”
“I tried—”
Reynara said softly.
“I don’t care!”
Luna screamed.
“You were supposed to protect him! You’re the Guardian!”
More tears streamed out, covering Luna’s face.
“I—I was going to give him the ribbon Mama left behind. I found it, and I… I was saving it for his birthday…”
Reynara reached out slowly. Her tails moved forward, but the moment one brushed Luna’s, the girl pulled away.
“Don’t touch me!”
Luna looked up at her with bloodshot eyes.
Reynara stopped, and suddenly…
Luna broke down.
“It hurts,”
She whispered.
“It hurts everywhere.”
“I know.”
Reynara muttered. What else could she say?
“I don’t want to feel like this,”
She sobbed.
“I don’t want to be here anymore… Not without him…”
She looked up at Reynara.
“Is there… anywhere I could go where it doesn’t hurt like this?”
At those words, Reynara hesitated.
This wasn’t the first time she had heard this question.
A place where it didn’t hurt like this…
She had thought about it thousands of times.
A world where pain does not exist,
A world where the very concept of sadness is merely an illusion.
A world with no life and death.
A world with only happiness.
A…
A Perfect World.
Reynara had been working on this for weeks now, and finally—
“There is… a place,”
She whispered softly.
“A place where the pain will never touch you. Where you can be happy. Where he will always be with you.”
Luna froze at those words.
“A place where… he’s there?”
Reynara gave a tiny nod. With her paws, she pointed at Luna’s heart.
“In your heart, he never left.
In that place… you can see him again.
You can smile again.”
Luna trembled.
“I… I won’t cry there?”
She questioned.
The words did not make sense. What did she mean by saying he never left in your heart!? How does that make any sense?
Right now, however, Luna was too shaken to care about that.
Just the sliver of possibility was enough to move her.
“No, never.”
Reynara promised gently.
There was silence, and as if the very world was agreeing with Reynara, the wind stirred again.
Luna wiped her eyes.
“…Can I go there now?”
She froze.
She didn’t answer right away.
She…
She still couldn’t bring herself to do something like this. However, seeing Luna’s broken state, her constantly trembling tails, and the amount of pain she was going through right now…
Reynara steeled her heart.
“…Do you truly wish to go there?”
“Yes.”
Luna nodded, and Reynara prepared herself.
This was the first time she was using her powers at such a grand scale—to create an entirely new world.
A Dreamworld.
A perfect world shaped by one’s deepest desires—a place where only happiness exists. This was the solution Reynara created to protect her people from pain.
Whenever someone was overwhelmed by sorrow, she would send them to the Dreamworld, allowing them to forget their suffering in a reality crafted from their own heart’s longing.
There, they could rest, heal, and find peace.
And once they felt ready—
Once the pain no longer weighed them down—
They could return to the real world,
Rejoining their loved ones, this time…
Without any pain.
With that thought in her mind, Reynara got closer to Luna. Her long tails hovered in the air, slowly beginning to glow, and a soft, silver light gathered around Luna’s chest—right where her heart was.
The light pulsed gently, like the beat of a lullaby.
This was Reynara’s strongest magic, her strongest illusion. An illusion that may very well be perceived as reality.
The magic listened to Luna’s heart.
It shaped itself to her memories. Her laughter. Her happiest days.
It pulled threads of joy, of love, of childhood wishes—
And wove them together to create it,
A world made solely for Luna—
A Perfect World.
