Chapter 386: Chapter 386
"Move quickly in a bit. If they’re dead, leave them—take out that woman first. Boss said no need to keep any survivors."
"Got it."
After a few scattered nods, silence fell over the group.
Hearing this conversation made Suzy’s blood run cold.
Take out that woman first? Me? Why??
How on earth had she crossed Nate?
Suzy genuinely couldn’t figure it out. Or was Nate simply picking a fight for no reason?
However, now was not the time to overthink it—the five men had already closed in on the vehicle.
"You two go over there, you come with me this way, and you stand right here."
After throwing out a few quick orders, the armed leader walked up to Suzy’s side of the car, grabbed the handle, and yanked hard.
The door was locked, remaining completely motionless.
"Damn it, it’s actually locked!"
Cursing under his breath, he gestured to the guy beside him, getting ready to smash the window.
Just as he raised the iron rod in his hands, right before it could strike the glass, a gunshot exploded from the other side.
From the front passenger seat, Mark pulled open the door and swiftly eliminated the two men watching him.
Two bullets, landing dead center between their eyebrows.
The two lost consciousness before they could even process what had hit them. They wouldn’t have guessed in a million years that Mark was carrying a firearm.
"Jack! Did you fire?!"
The leader hadn’t even realized that his own teammates were already dead.
Before he could make his next move, Suzy slammed her car door wide open, shoving it violently into the two men preparing to smash the window.
Caught off guard, the duo staggered back from the sudden blow.
Seizing the exact moment of their distraction, Suzy pulled the trigger twice with two loud bangs.
Both bullets struck right between their eyebrows.
In just a brief moment, Suzy and Mark had taken out four of the five men, giving them zero chance to fight back.
Suzy picked up the fallen firearm off the ground and raised her eyes to scan the distance.
The last of the five men had taken off running the second he realized things were going south. It had to be said, he was ridiculously fast—he had already vanished without a trace.
"What do we do now?" Mark turned to Suzy.
"Get back in the car. Nate is probably waiting for us up ahead," Suzy said.
At the mention of that name, Mark knit his brows tightly. "What on earth is he up to?"
"It doesn’t matter anymore. In the apocalypse, you don’t need a reason to kill someone—maybe it was just a passing whim," Suzy sighed.
"He wouldn’t go through all this trouble for a passing whim," Mark countered.
To kill Suzy, Nate had set a trap, dispatched five men, and even armed them with guns. This was no small arrangement.
"Let’s get back in the car first."
"Is the car fine?"
"It’s fine, very sturdy."
The two climbed back into the vehicle, and Suzy started the engine.
Sure enough, after driving ahead for a short distance, they spotted Nate.
His black SUV was parked right in the middle of the road, and he was leaning against the car frame, clearly having waited for a long time.
"You actually made it through—they couldn’t get rid of... you."
When uttering the word "you," Nate stared directly at Suzy, that same gentle, friendly smile still fixed on his face.
Suzy frowned. "Do I have some feud with you?"
"Of course not! Why would you think that?" Nate feigned surprise.
"Then why did you order your men to kill me?" Suzy nearly laughed out of sheer anger.
Nate put on a completely matter-of-fact expression. "Just because there’s no feud, I can’t order people to kill you?"
"Dude, is there something seriously wrong with your head?" Suzy nearly gagged on her own breath from Nate’s utter audacity.
"Not at all," Nate spread his hands innocently.
It was virtually impossible to communicate with him. How on earth didn’t I notice earlier that this guy is brain-sick—a complete lunatic?
"Still, I do have a reason why I must kill you," Nate added unhurriedly.
"Forget it, it doesn’t matter anymore," Suzy was done caring.
Whatever his reason was, since he had already set his heart on killing her, all she had to do was kill him first—simple as that.
"Stop wasting your breath on him," Mark piped up, raising the weapon in his hands and aiming straight in Nate’s direction.
Hearing Mark speak, Nate turned his gaze over, his eyes exceptionally complex.
"Are you sure you really want to move against me?" Nate tossed out a sentence completely out of left field.
Mark stared back at him expressionlessly.
"Aren’t we on the same side? For you to point a gun at me like this... it truly hurts my heart," Nate sighed.
Suzy looked at Mark, then back at Nate.
On the same side? What does that mean? Is Mark with him? Is he speaking the truth, or intentionally trying to drive a wedge between us?
Suzy was far more inclined to believe that Nate was deliberately trying to sow discord.
After all, Mark had been with her for so long, and the two had traveled all the way together from X City. There was no way Mark could have known Nate even earlier than that, right?
Could such a coincidence really exist...? Her thoughts grew somewhat tangled, but Suzy tried her best to stay composed.
"Who’s on the same side as you?" Mark sneered.
"Refusing to admit it? You really are confused," Nate sighed with a hint of helplessness.
Mark didn’t waste another word with him and pulled the trigger directly.
The bullet sped out toward Nate, aiming straight for his brain.
Nate’s eyes narrowed instantly as he reacted—sidestepping, he barely dodged the oncoming round. Still, he was a fraction of a second too slow; the bullet grazed his cheek, leaving a faint streak of blood.
"You actually shot at me! Are you crazy?!" Nate glared furiously at Mark.
Mark looked at him with icy indifference. "So what if I did?"
Without waiting for Nate’s response, Mark fired off several more rounds in rapid succession.
Nate managed to dodge them with difficulty, the flames of fury in his eyes almost bursting out.
Yanking out his gun, he squeezed the trigger right at Mark, but Mark had anticipated it, swiftly darting behind cover.
Suzy was completely baffled by the exchange between the two.
From the look of it, Nate genuinely seemed to believe Mark was on his side. But why?
Does he know Mark?
Their initial reactions upon meeting clearly showed they didn’t know each other. Or did this Nate guy suffer from some sort of delusion?
Perhaps Mark had thoroughly enraged Nate, as his entire attention was now locked onto Mark, completely ignoring Suzy off to the side.
Suzy swiftly unleashed a burst of gunfire at him before ducking behind cover herself.
