Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 58: The First City Falls
The command deck remained unnaturally quiet after the mutated bull’s distorted image vanished from the main terminal.
Outside the thick observation glass, the sickly crimson sky continued to pulse with unnatural atmospheric energy. Raviah Solomon stood beside the central workstation, her eyes scanning the complex biological metrics generated by the fallen atmospheric fragments.
Her medical mind was already calculating infection rates, cellular mutation speeds, and potential elemental reactions.
BEEP!
A sharp, high-priority military signal cut through the quiet room, overriding the facility’s internal security filters.
The chief communications officer sat up straight, his face turning pale under the glowing interface. "General! Emergency transmission coming through from Eastern Defense Intelligence!"
Rhyder Drakeheir turned away from the observation window, his heavy combat boots echoing against the steel floor. "Put it on the central feed immediately."
The primary holographic screen flickered erratically before locking onto a live video signal.
A senior military intelligence officer appeared on the display, his uniform rumpled and his dark eyes bloodshot with sheer exhaustion. "General Drakeheir, we have official confirmation of a catastrophic urban collapse."
Rhyder’s jaw set into hard granite as he took a step toward the display. "Which city?"
The intelligence officer hesitated for a fraction of a second, his hands visibly shaking. "Veyron City."
Raviah felt her fingers tighten into fists at her sides. Veyron was the largest, most densely populated metropolitan center in the eastern region, housing millions of civilians and the main regional trade hub.
"Report the situation," Rhyder demanded, his tone dangerously cold.
"Multiple biological infection points emerged approximately forty minutes ago," the officer reported, his voice cracking with restrained terror. "Initially, local law enforcement treated them as isolated, aggressive animal mutations."
The officer swallowed hard, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Then the corrupted material reached the high-density residential districts."
A tactical grid of Veyron City snapped onto the side display. Entire sectors were rapidly turning from green to deep, warning crimson.
"Emergency medical services were overwhelmed within fifteen minutes," the officer continued, pointing at the flashing red zones. "Police precincts lost all radio contact, and regional hospitals exceeded maximum capacity almost instantly."
He pulled up a secondary tactical log. "Local garrison units attempted to construct defensive blockades around the inner perimeter, but several squad leaders were exposed to the biological pathogen."
The map continued to bleed red, erasing whole commercial and residential zones in real time.
"Approximately twelve minutes ago, central command lost total contact with Veyron’s municipal administration," the officer concluded grimly.
Rhyder’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. "What is the status of the civilian evacuation?"
"Millions of panic-stricken residents attempted to flee simultaneously," the officer replied.
He transferred a live satellite feed onto the main glass screen. The primary highways encircling Veyron City were completely gridlocked, jammed bumper-to-bumper with thousands of abandoned vehicles.
Thick black smoke billowed into the air from multi-car pileups along the main overpasses. Civilians were running frantically between stalled cars, carrying whatever belongings they could grab.
Armored military transport vehicles attempted to plow through the gridlock, but the sheer volume of fleeing humans blocked every escape route.
Suddenly, a massive shape smashed through a concrete highway barrier on the feed.
The satellite camera violently shook, losing focus before re-centering on the overpass. A towering, mutated beast with grotesque crystalline growths along its back slammed directly into an overturned bus.
Absolute horror erupted across the highway. Cars collided as drivers tried to reverse, and the vital evacuation route transformed into a slaughterhouse.
Raviah stared at the gruesome footage, her pulse hammering against her ribs. "This collapse is occurring far faster than it should."
The intelligence officer leaned closer to his camera, his expression grim. "General Drakeheir, Eastern Defense Command has issued immediate, level-one deployment directives for your unit."
A formal military document materialized on Rhyder’s tactical console.
[GENERAL RHYDER DRAKEHEIR] [DEPLOYMENT ORDER: IMMEDIATE]
[OBJECTIVE: Veyron City Evacuation Corridor and Containment]
[AUTHORIZED FORCES: EASTERN DEFENSE DIVISION]
Rhyder read the official deployment order in complete silence, his face unreadable.
A secondary system alert popped up directly beneath the command document.
[STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT: SOL HAVEN DESIGNATED HIGH-VALUE SURVIVAL ASSET]
Rhyder’s dark eyes narrowed as he digested the classification. Sol Haven was no longer viewed by high command as a wealthy doctor’s private estate. It had officially been flagged as one of the very few functioning agricultural, energy, and medical strongholds remaining in the entire province.
Its vast crop fields could feed a starving army, its subterranean medical bays could treat hundreds of wounded soldiers, and its independent power grid remained fully operational. Its fortified position at the base of the mountains made it an irreplaceable fallback base for surviving forces.
The military could not afford to lose Veyron City, but it also could not afford to let Sol Haven fall.
Rhyder slowly turned his head to look at Raviah. His entire division was being violently pulled between two critical objectives.
Veyron City needed thousands of soldiers to clear the blocked highways and suppress mutated beasts. Sol Haven needed trained forces to secure its outer perimeter against incoming hordes.
The roads connecting the city to the mountain valley were already turning into dangerous death traps.
"How many troops can we deploy without abandoning our positions?" Rhyder asked his chief operations officer.
The officer immediately brought up the division’s active roster on his tablet, running rapid tactical simulations. "If we move the full division to Veyron as ordered, General, Sol Haven’s outer defense perimeter will be left severely undermanned."
"And if we hold troops back?" Rhyder pressed.
The officer’s total silence provided the bitter answer.
Rhyder turned back toward the primary tactical map, his voice steady. "Split the division."
Several officers around the command deck exchanged startled, uneasy glances.
"Third Regiment will move south to clear the northern evacuation corridor out of Veyron," Rhyder commanded. "Fifth Regiment will advance to secure the western agricultural road."
He tapped a blinking marker near the mountain pass. "Keep two full infantry battalions stationed here."
The operations officer hesitated, stepping forward. "General, two battalions are simply not enough to defend a perimeter of this size against a large-scale biological threat."
"I am well aware of our limitations," Rhyder replied coldly.
Raviah, who had been quietly listening to the tactical debate, finally stepped forward. "Then send more soldiers to the city."
Rhyder turned his sharp gaze back onto her. "To Veyron?"
She gave a firm nod, her expression resolute. "There are millions of defenseless civilians trapped on those highways."
"Raviah--" he began, stepping closer.
"Save as many innocent people as you possibly can," she interrupted, looking up into his eyes.
His dark expression darkened further. "And if deploying those troops leaves you completely exposed to an attack?"
Raviah met his intense gaze without flinching. "Then protect the civilians first."
Rhyder stood directly in front of her, his tall frame casting a shadow over her under the harsh console lights.
"No," he said, his voice flat and unyielding.
Raviah’s dark eyes widened slightly at his blunt refusal. "What?"
"I will not accept those terms," Rhyder stated firmly.
"Rhyder, listen to reason--"
"I will not protect the rest of the province by leaving you vulnerable to being wiped out," he cut in, his voice ringing with absolute finality.
"This isn’t about my personal safety!" she argued, her tone rising.
"It is entirely about your safety when you are standing inside the single most valuable target in this entire region," he shot back.
Raviah’s posture softened slightly, her voice dropping. "My fortress has automated defense turrets, reinforced blast doors, and a trained security detail. We can defend ourselves."
"I know what your base is capable of," Rhyder replied.
"Then take your men and go save those people," she urged.
He shook his head slowly, refusing to back down. "You are asking me to choose between a million strangers and you."
"And I am telling you to fulfill your duty as a General and save them!"
"And I am telling you that I am not sacrificing your life to do it!" Rhyder countered, his low voice carrying a fierce, quiet intensity that stunned the room into silence.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke a word, their eyes locked in a silent battle of wills.
Finally, Rhyder pulled his gaze away, turning back to face his waiting staff. "Prepare the split deployment protocols as ordered."
The command center instantly erupted into frantic activity. Officers shouted directives over secure radios, tactical maps recalculated troop routes, and reconnaissance drones were launched toward Veyron City.
While the staff managed the chaotic mobilization, Rhyder quietly stepped to the corner of the deck, opening an encrypted, direct military channel on his personal device.
Only one high-ranking officer held the access clearance for this specific line.
"Colonel," Rhyder spoke softly into his throat mic.
A deep, disciplined voice answered through his earpiece almost immediately. "General?"
Rhyder glanced over his shoulder toward Raviah. She was standing near the biological research station, deeply focused on analyzing the strange crystalline sample, entirely oblivious to his private conversation.
"Activate the Nightfall Unit," Rhyder ordered quietly.
A heavy pause settled over the line. The colonel understood the profound significance of that command instantly.
"Sir, Nightfall is your personal, off-the-books elite protection squad," the colonel reminded him carefully. "They are your most lethal shadow operators."
"I am well aware of their capabilities," Rhyder replied flatly.
"Where do you want them deployed, General?"
Rhyder’s dark eyes remained fixed squarely on Raviah’s back. "Station them permanently inside Sol Haven’s inner perimeter."
"Your official deployment orders from Eastern Command are for Veyron City, sir," the colonel noted.
Rhyder’s gaze hardened into iron. "My primary order is to protect the one thing that truly matters."
Another brief pause followed over the encrypted link.
"Understood, General," the colonel replied with absolute discipline. "Nightfall is moving into position."
"Do not, under any circumstances, inform Doctor Solomon of their presence," Rhyder added coldly.
"Understood, sir."
Rhyder closed the channel with a brief tap.
Across the busy command deck, Raviah suddenly turned her head, as if sensing his intense gaze upon her. Their eyes met across the room. For a lingering moment, neither of them said a word.
Then, Rhyder turned back toward the primary holographic map, adjusting his tactical belt as the final deployment orders were transmitted.
Far beyond the mountain ridge, another thick column of black smoke rose high into the night sky, swallowing the horizon. The first major city of the old world had officially fallen into total darkness.
And as millions of terrified refugees fled into the night, General Rhyder Drakeheir had quietly placed his most dangerous shadow soldiers around the one woman he refused to lose a second time.
