The medical scanner’s glass display glowed with a pale crimson light in the underground laboratory. Raviah Solomon stared at the final diagnostic prompt hovering on the monitor, her eyes tracking the precise text.

[STRUCTURAL INFLUENCE: DETECTED]

Her slender fingers remained curled as a faint, hummed energy swirled invisibly around her palm. She had barely begun to decipher the complex cellular changes in her body when a soft mechanical sound echoed from the heavy laboratory entrance.

Click.

Raviah’s head snapped toward the metallic entryway, her body instantly shifting into a defensive posture. The biometric lock on the reinforced door had activated without her authorization.

Someone was standing on the other side.

She immediately extinguished the translucent energy, willing the mysterious power back beneath her skin. The faint glow vanished into her flesh as if it had never existed.

The laboratory returned to a heavy, suffocating silence.

Then, the heavy reinforced door slid open with a hydraulic hiss. General Rhyder Drakeheir stepped inside, his tall, broad-shouldered frame blocking the harsh corridor light behind him.

Raviah’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits as she met his gaze.

"You shouldn’t be here," she said, her voice dropping to a cool, clipped tone.

Rhyder glanced at the security panel beside the frame, his dark eyes impassive. "I knocked."

"You entered anyway."

"You didn’t answer."

Raviah folded her arms over her chest, keeping her posture guarded. "I was conducting a private medical examination."

"I noticed." His dark eyes drifted from her face toward the glowing diagnostic terminal.

Raviah’s expression remained completely neutral, betrayed by nothing. "What do you need?"

Rhyder didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his gaze shifted downward, locking directly onto her right hand.

Raviah followed his line of sight to her own wrist. A single translucent thread of glowing energy still coiled softly around her skin. In her haste, she had failed to suppress the phenomenon completely.

Rhyder’s expression shifted, the usual cold distance giving way to something far sharper. It wasn’t fear or shock in his dark eyes, but raw recognition. "You awakened."

Raviah’s fingers closed instantly into a tight fist. The faint thread of energy snapped and vanished into thin air. "You’re mistaken."

"No." His answer was immediate, sharp, and absolute. He stepped farther into the quiet laboratory, his heavy boots resounding off the cold metal flooring. "I saw it."

Raviah remained silent, realizing the futility of denying it. He had witnessed enough of the manifestation with his own eyes.

Rhyder paused beside the console, his eyes scanning the detailed readings on the diagnostic terminal.

[ROOT STRUCTURE: ACTIVE]

[ENERGY MANIPULATION: STABLE]

[BIOLOGICAL RESONANCE: UNIDENTIFIED]

He read the diagnostic lines carefully, absorbing every detail before turning back to her. "How long?"

Raviah’s brow tightened slightly. "How long what?"

"How long have you possessed this ability?"

"Since tonight."

Rhyder studied her face, searching for any subtle sign of deceit. "That’s not what I asked."

The silence between them stretched thin, filled only by the low hum of the bio-scanners. Raviah stepped toward the terminal, her hand moving rapidly to wipe the screen and shut down the active diagnostic display.

"I discovered my Root had begun activating tonight," she stated firmly.

"Yet you already know exactly how to control it."

"I am a physician," she replied coldly, pulling from her vast background.

"You manipulated elemental energy with your thoughts," he pointed out, stepping closer.

Raviah said nothing, keeping her jaw set.

"You detected biological changes inside your own cells."

Still, she offered no verbal response.

"And you immediately understood what those changes could mean." His voice remained low and calm, yet his dark gaze grew increasingly intense. "You have been preparing for this."

Raviah slowly turned to face him fully, meeting his gaze without flinching. "I’ve been preparing for everything."

"That’s not an answer."

"It is the only one I can give you."

Rhyder watched her in silence for several lingering seconds, processing her words. Then, his stoic expression softened, not by much, but enough for her keen eye to notice. "You should have told me."

Raviah looked away, focusing on the dark glass of the deactivated console. "I didn’t know whether I could trust anyone with this information."

"You trusted me with the existence of the Core."

"Because I needed your protection."

"And now?"

She hesitated, her breathing shallow as she weighed her response.

Rhyder took another step forward, closing the remaining distance between them. "Now you have an ability that could make you a target for every military faction, research organization, and desperate survivor once the world understands what Elementals can become."

Raviah’s eyes sharpened as she locked onto his face. "I can protect myself."

"I know." His answer caught her off guard. There was no condescension in his voice, nor any dismissal of her strength. "That’s exactly what concerns me."

Raviah frowned, tilting her head slightly. "Why?"

"Because you’re the kind of person who will walk into danger alone if you believe you can solve the problem yourself."

She stared at him, unable to counter his assessment. He wasn’t wrong. Her instinct had always been self-reliance, forged through betrayal and isolation.

Rhyder turned his head slightly, glancing toward the sealed doors of the underground facility.

"Your farm is already attracting attention. The military knows about the Core. Mutated animals are appearing. Elementals are awakening." His dark gaze swept back to her, heavy with unspoken weight. "And now you have awakened too."

Raviah lowered her eyes, looking down at her hands. "I don’t know what my Root is capable of yet."

"I know." Rhyder’s voice turned firm and steady. "Which is why you won’t test its limits alone."

She snapped her gaze up to meet his. "I don’t need a bodyguard."

"I’m not offering to be your bodyguard."

"Then what are you offering?"

Rhyder paused, holding her gaze with steady focus.

"Protection."

The single word carried immense weight, echoing softly in the quiet room. Raviah felt a strange tightness in her chest as the emotion washed over her.

He wasn’t treating her like a helpless civilian in need of saving. He was treating her as someone invaluable, someone worth shielding while she uncovered her true power.

"I can protect myself," she repeated, her voice softer this time.
