Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 102: The Doctor Evolves
The moment Raviah spoke, the world seemed to answer in a violent wave. An invisible pulse of raw energy rippled outward across the blood-soaked battlefield.
Her root expanded exponentially farther than ever before, surging past the ruined watchtower. It swept beyond the northern ramparts, flooding through the field medical stations and active defensive trenches.
For one terrifying instant, Raviah could perceive almost every living and infected organism within Sol Haven. Thousands of distinct biological signatures flared inside her consciousness like a living star map.
Human cores glowed like scattered stars, while mutated beasts burned with chaotic elemental fire. Zerg Cores pulsed in synchronized, crimson patterns, and the zombie network flickered like an enormous web of crystalline nerves.
And somehow, through the invisible threads of her Root, she could feel and touch all of them simultaneously.
Her breath caught in her throat as translucent system overlays flooded her vision.
[ROOT EVOLUTION DETECTED]
[BIOLOGICAL MANIPULATION: ADVANCED]
[BIOLOGICAL NETWORK SYNCHRONIZATION: ACTIVE]
[ROOT CAPABILITY EXPANSION: CONFIRMED]
Raviah stared at the glowing text in shock. Her Root had fundamentally changed. It was no longer merely a localized healing technique but a true biological authority.
A wounded soldier screamed in agony a few meters away, his leg torn by shrapnel. Raviah instinctively extended her perception toward him, sending a pulse of restoring energy.
Then something impossible happened. Across the trench, another wounded soldier’s internal bleeding suddenly began stabilizing at the same moment.
Then another soldier gasped as his torn muscle fibers knit together. Then ten more across the northern line.
Raviah froze in disbelief, her hands hovering in the air. She hadn’t even touched them physically. Her Root was treating them all at once, routing restorative energy through the biological network itself.
"Doctor!" a field medic shouted, dropping to his knees beside a fallen rifleman. "His arterial bleeding just stopped!"
Raviah turned her gaze toward the main field hospital near the central sector. Dozens of critically wounded soldiers lay across blood-stained stretchers awaiting surgery.
One by one, their damaged tissues began stabilizing under her distant influence. Ruptured blood vessels sealed, shattered bone fractures aligned, internal hemorrhaging slowed, and flickering cores steadied.
Raviah’s eyes widened as she felt the massive web of lives linked to her mind. "I can reach all of them..."
Her root had evolved far beyond individual, hands-on treatment. She could now stabilize an entire battlefield of casualties simultaneously.
A high-pitched scream suddenly rang out from the western perimeter wall. A soldier collapsed onto his back as dark, crystalline growths rapidly spread across his forearm.
"Mutation!" a squad leader yelled, raising his rifle in panic.
Raviah turned her head instantly, her expanded perception diving into the soldier’s body. The abnormal biological energy was multiplying violently, threatening to overwrite his human nervous system.
In the past, suppressing such a rapid mutation would have required direct physical contact and concentrated effort. Now, she simply extended her Root’s reach through the atmospheric network.
The foreign energy pathway abruptly halted its spread. The jagged crystalline growths stopped expanding, dulled in color, and slowly began flaking away into dust.
The soldier stared at his arm in disbelief, flexing his restored fingers.
Raviah whispered, "I can suppress mutations."
A second soldier was infected by Zerg toxins near the barricades, and then a third. Raviah stretched her root across the entire western line without hesitation.
The spreading biological abnormalities slowed simultaneously across the front lines. Even the elemental instability caused by heavy Zerg biological contamination began diminishing under her soothing energy.
But then, a sudden, crushing weakness struck her chest.
Her vision blurred violently into black spots, and her knees gave way. She stumbled forward into the dust.
Rhyder caught her immediately, his arms wrapping tightly around her shoulders. "Raviah!"
She forced her eyes open, pushing herself upright against his chest. "I’m fine."
Rhyder looked at her suspiciously, his brows furrowed with deep concern.
She turned back toward the battlefield, where another wave of wounded soldiers was being carried out of the burning forest. Raviah reached into her spatial storage, pulling out a vial of energy solution before extending her root once more.
Her power responded instantly, surging out to meet the dying soldiers. But this time, a sickening emptiness began pulling directly from her body.
It was no longer merely her Core’s elemental reserves being drained. It was something far deeper and more vital. Her muscles felt impossibly weak, her heartbeat grew irregular, and her skin lost all color.
Red alert windows flashed violently across her vision.
[WARNING]
[ROOT ENERGY CONSUMPTION: EXTREME]
[BIOLOGICAL SYNCHRONIZATION: ACTIVE]
[VITAL ENERGY CONVERSION DETECTED]
Raviah stared at the final line of red text, her heart sinking.
Vital energy. Her evolved Root wasn’t just consuming her stored elemental reserves. It was actively converting her own life force to fuel the massive network.
She could physically feel her life burning away. Every soldier she stabilized took a piece of her vitality, every mutation she suppressed drained her strength, and every biological pathway she manipulated pulled directly from her own heart.
Yet, the cries of the wounded echoed across the valley as more litters flooded the triage zone.
Raviah clenched her trembling fists, setting her jaw. She couldn’t stop, not while people were dying all around her.
She extended her root further, stabilizing another dozen critically injured soldiers in an instant. Her knees buckled under the sudden backfire.
Rhyder caught her around the waist, lifting her off the ground before she hit the concrete. "Enough!"
Raviah shook her head weakly against his shoulder. "No."
"You’re exhausted!" he shouted over the noise of artillery.
"They’re still dying!" she argued, her voice raspy and faint.
"You’ve already saved hundreds!" Rhyder countered, his voice raw.
"And there are hundreds more!" she cried, trying to push away from his chest.
She attempted to step back toward the edge of the tower platform, but Rhyder held her firmly in place.
"Raviah!" he called her name, his tone changing. It was no longer the sharp command of a general but the desperate plea of a terrified man.
She looked up into his face. His dark eyes were fixed on the live system diagnostic readings mirroring onto her wrist display.
Her vitality levels were plummeting in real time.
[VITAL ENERGY: 71%]
Rhyder’s expression twisted in pure horror. "Stop using your Root!"
Raviah shook her head stubbornly. "I can still help them."
"That’s exactly the problem!" he snapped, pulling her wrist up to force her to look at the numbers.
The red numbers continued to tick downward without stopping.
[VITAL ENERGY: 64%]
[58%]
[51%]
Rhyder stared at the dropping numbers, his hand shaking as he gripped hers. "You’re not spending elemental energy anymore!"
Raviah went silent, unable to offer a lie.
He looked directly into her pale face, his chest heaving. "Your root is consuming you!"
Another massive explosion rocked the outer defenses, and screams of pain echoed from the trenches. Raviah instinctively reached her free hand toward the sound.
Rhyder caught her hand mid-air, wrapping his fingers tightly around hers. "No!"
"Rhyder--" she begged.
"No!" His voice cracked with overwhelming emotion. "If you continue doing this, you’re going to die!"
Raviah stared at him in the dim, smoky light. Beyond the parapets, thousands of soldiers and Elementals were fighting for their lives.
The Zerg army was advancing, the zombie hordes were closing in from the south, and mutated beasts were tearing through their western flank. Humanity desperately needed her power to survive this night.
But the man holding her hand needed her alive.
Rhyder’s grip tightened around her cold, trembling fingers until his knuckles turned white.
"I survived that tower," he whispered, his eyes burning with unshed tears as he looked at her. "Don’t make me watch you die after saving me."
