Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 100: The Fortress War
The first Zerg wave crashed through the outer agricultural fields like a living tidal wave.
Black chitinous armor tore through standing crops, crushing irrigation pipes and turning farming machinery to scrap beneath thousands of churning limbs. Glowing crimson eyes filled the dark as the swarm surged toward the outer defensive perimeter.
"Fire!" a commander shouted over the defensive channel.
Artillery batteries thundered in unison, shaking the reinforced earth. Explosive shells tore through the advancing ranks, scattering black shell fragments and dark fluid across the ruined soil. Machine guns chattered along the line, their tracer fire weaving a dense web of lead.
Elementals joined the barrage from their elevated ramparts. Streams of fire erupted across the dirt, creating raging barriers that funneled the Zerg into narrow kill zones.
Earth Elementals raised stone pillars beneath advancing squads, while Air Elementals hurled wind blades through clusters of beasts.
Thunder Elementals summoned jagged lightning bolts from the dark sky, frying entire ranks where they stood. For several intense minutes, the primary defensive line held firm against the tide.
Then the ground beneath the forward trench violently exploded.
A large, armored Zerg burst upward directly beneath an artillery position. The soil collapsed inward, dragging weapons and crewmen into the pit.
"Underground!" a soldier screamed into his transmitter.
Dozens of Zerg erupted from subterranean tunnels, flanking the defensive line from blind spots hidden from surface radar.
"They’re underneath us!" another voice panicked.
Rhyder’s communicator burst with frantic, overlapping reports.
"Eastern trench breached!"
"Underground movement detected beneath Sector Four!"
"Southern line requesting immediate backup!"
Rhyder’s eyes swept across the flickering display. The enemy was not just attacking the outer walls. They were digging beneath the fortress foundation.
"Seal the agricultural tunnels!" Rhyder ordered into his unit comms. "Do not let them reach the underground civilian shelters!"
Squads of soldiers rushed toward the inner access hatches to secure the lower levels.
Before they could reach the doors, a deafening roar rolled out from the northern tree line. The surrounding dark forest came alive with monstrous shapes breaking through the timber.
Mutated beasts surged into the open, their bodies radically altered by the atmospheric energy. Enormous wolf-like creatures with jagged crystalline growths along their spines lunged over the shattered fences, accompanied by twisted predators native to the valley.
Their eyes glowed with unnatural elemental hues. One massive beast opened its jaws, releasing a concentrated beam of elemental fire that melted a steel barricade instantly.
"Mutated beasts entering from the western forest!" a scout yelled from a watchtower.
Soldiers swung their turrets toward the forest edge, opening fire on the charging beasts. Nearby Elemental squads rushed to plug the gap in the western line.
The battlefield dissolved into chaos. Zerg tore through the front trenches, mutated beasts rampaged from the woods, and a third horror emerged from the southern highway.
Zombies arrived in dense, organized ranks from the ruined cities. Thousands of frozen, mutated corpses marched through the rubble, their crystalline structures shining faintly beneath gray, rotting skin.
Unlike mindless stragglers, these infected moved in coordinated formations. Some swung scrap-metal weapons, while others manipulated crude elemental powers.
A giant frozen zombie slammed its crystalline fists into the asphalt, sending a wave of ice surging across the road. Several soldiers were launched backward by the sudden freezing blast.
"Zombie formation approaching the southern perimeter!" a squad leader reported.
Rhyder set his jaw as he assessed the multi-front assault. "Hold every sector."
He turned away from the strategic console and moved briskly toward the door.
"General!" an aide called out, stepping into his path. "You need to remain in the command bunker!"
Rhyder brushed past him, unholstering his sidearm and drawing his combat blade. "If my soldiers are fighting on the ramparts, so am I."
He strode directly into the chaotic front line, blue elemental energy swirling around his blade. A leaping Zerg lunged at his chest, but Rhyder sidestepped smoothly, driving his blade straight through its crystalline throat.
Another beast snapped at his left flank. Without missing a beat, Rhyder raised his rifle and fired a high-caliber round straight into its chest, dropping it instantly.
"Advance!" he roared to the frontline troops.
Inspired by his presence, soldiers and Elementals surged forward together as a single unit. Fire Elementals burned clear paths through the swarm, while Earth Elementals erected rapid breastworks to protect the wounded.
Air Elementals carried crates of vital ammunition over contaminated ground, and Healing Elementals moved constantly between squad lines, stabilizing damaged Cores and keeping soldiers on their feet.
Conventional infantry fired shoulder-to-shoulder with awakened Elementals, leaving no line unsupported.
At the center of the defensive grid, Raviah moved relentlessly between forward aid stations. She had converted three bunkers into emergency triage centers: one near the northern wall, one in the western farm zone, and one in the subterranean tunnels.
She refused to stay behind safe bunker doors, actively directing the medical triage.
"Next!" she called out, wiping sweat from her brow.
A wounded soldier was rushed in on a bloody stretcher, his chest severely clawed. Raviah pressed her hands directly against his torn tissue, activating her biological root.
Within her heightened perception, the man’s vascular structures and damaged tissue lit up clearly. She manipulated his biological energy, sealing ruptured vessels, knitting muscle fibers, and stabilizing his faltering core.
"Get him to the surgical bay for closure!" she instructed the attending nurses.
Another bleeding soldier was brought in immediately, followed by two more. The stream of casualties was endless, leaving her no time to rest or catch her breath.
An explosion reverberated through the medical bunker, shaking dust from the ceiling. Raviah paused briefly, casting her diagnostic sense toward the northern front.
She located Rhyder’s distinctive Core signature far out in the fray, vibrant, intense, and actively fighting. Reassured, she packed her field kit and moved toward the northern ramparts.
Outside, the battlefield was a nightmare. Burning fields cast long, distorted shadows as forests collapsed under artillery fire.
Zombies flooded the southern access roads, while Zerg scaled the lower concrete walls on piles of their own dead. Elementals fought until their internal energy trembled from severe exhaustion. Yet Sol Haven stood firm, a lit fortress in a sea of dark madness.
Rhyder reached the foundation of the northern watchtower, cutting down a pair of Zerg drones.
"General!" a soldier yelled from above, pointing at the support pillars.
The steel-and-concrete tower groaned violently. A colossal mutated Zerg had wrapped its body around the base, cracking the primary structural supports.
System warnings flashed red across Rhyder’s tactical HUD.
[DEFENSIVE TOWER STRUCTURAL FAILURE]
[INTEGRITY: 18%]
"Clear the area!" Rhyder shouted to the surrounding infantry. "Move back now!"
The concrete base snapped with a sound like thunder, and the heavy tower began to tilt sideways.
Raviah emerged from the bunker access just in time to see the shadow falling. "Rhyder!" she screamed.
Rhyder looked toward her voice just as the structure collapsed downward. Tons of reinforced concrete, steel beams, and twisted machinery crashed over the position, sending a plume of dust billowing across the sector.
Raviah sprinted toward the impact zone, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Her diagnostic HUD flickered as the interference cleared.
[GENERAL RHYDER DRAKEHEIR: SIGNAL LOST]
The war raged on around her with a deafening roar, but to Raviah, the world went completely silent.
Rhyder was buried beneath the rubble, and his energy signature had vanished.
