Doctor Reborn as a Peasant Girl? Time to Get Rich
Chapter 62: Couldn’t Find the Eggs
Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Couldn’t Find the Eggs
Bai Zhi glanced at the wooden stick in the corner of the room and smiled. "It’s nothing. I’d like to see who dares to mess with me."
Hearing the approaching footsteps, she got up, picked up the wooden stick, and stood in front of the bed. She had to prevent these two vicious hags from going berserk and hurting her mother again.
Old Mrs. Bai kicked the door open, her eyes fixed malevolently on Bai Zhi as she demanded, "You wretched girl, you’ve learned to hide things now, have you? Speak! Where on earth did you hide the eggs Mrs. Yingzi brought?"
Bai Zhi met her glare with a cold one of her own, raising her voice to match. "Grandma, what are you talking about? What eggs? I don’t know anything about them."
Liu chimed in, "Stop playing dumb. Mrs. Yingzi came by this morning saying she was looking for you. She was carrying a basket of eggs. Are you telling me you didn’t hide them?"
Bai Zhi sneered. "Aunt Xu was carrying a basket of eggs and said they were for me?"
Liu faltered, her voice losing some of its volume. "Well, she didn’t say so, but they must have been for you. Don’t think we don’t know you saved Yingzi."
"What makes you so sure? Did you hear her say it, or did you see her give them to me? You’ve already searched my mother’s and my room. Did you find anything?"
Liu said hastily, "You must have hidden them so you could eat them all by yourselves! Don’t forget, you’re part of the Bai family. Everything should be shared among all of us. You’re not allowed to keep things for yourself."
Bai Zhi had the sudden urge to drop her stick and applaud Liu. "Well said, Aunt! Perfectly said! We’re all part of the Bai family, so everything should be shared. That’s only fair, right? So then why is it, when your son eats an egg, I don’t get one? When your son drinks meat soup, why isn’t a bowl saved for my mother and me? When you had new clothes made for yourself, why didn’t you have a set made for my mother and me, too?"
Liu was about to argue, but Bai Zhi cut her off. "When my mother goes to work in the fields, why don’t you go, Aunt? You’re a woman, and my mother is a woman. What, were you born more precious than she is? Is the rough fieldwork beneath you?"
Liu never would have thought that this wretched girl, Bai Zhi, had not only learned to fight back physically, but her tongue had also become incredibly sharp. She was left speechless by this barrage of rebukes.
Old Mrs. Bai couldn’t be bothered with this nonsense. All she wanted to know was where that basket of eggs had gone and if they could still be recovered.
"Enough of this useless chatter. Now tell me, where did you hide the eggs?" the old woman roared.
The Bai Zhi of the past would have trembled with fear at the sight of the old woman’s ferocious expression. But the Bai Zhi of today was not the same person.
Bai Zhi took two steps forward, stick in hand, and slammed its end onto the dirt floor with a loud THWACK. Her posture seemed unassuming, but the ferocious glint that flashed in her eyes made Old Mrs. Bai and Liu stumble back two steps in shock.
"I told you, there are no eggs. If you don’t believe me, search for them yourselves. I won’t stop you. But if you’re just using this as an excuse to bully my mother, then I, Bai Zhi, will make one thing clear right here and now: from this day forward, if anyone dares to lay a single finger on my mother—I don’t care who it is—I will not let them go. I’ll drag them to hell with me if I have to. Do you understand?"
In all her years, Old Mrs. Bai had never been threatened like this. A mix of panic and fury seized her. The hand she pointed at Bai Zhi trembled violently, and her voice shook uncontrollably. "You... you you... you’re rebelling!"
"I wouldn’t call it ’rebelling.’ I’m just telling you what’s on my mind. You can listen or not, I don’t care." Her expression was indifferent, her gaze looking right through Old Mrs. Bai and Liu. An air of pride surrounded her—something the Bai Zhi of the past never possessed.
