Chapter 129: Chapter 121: Doctor Song

That was the original idea.

Meng Nan glanced at the Jin guard, who shook his head in terror. "No, absolutely not, Sir! This is Huangcai! He’s been with me for ten years. I’ll never agree to sell him."

’I wasn’t actually planning to sell Huangcai,’ Meng Nan thought. ’I just glanced at him. Was it necessary to be so dramatic?’

Meng Nan said, "Miss Bai, Huangcai is the apple of the Jin guard’s eye. He’s off-limits. How about this? I’ll go back and use the prescription you wrote. If my facial affliction is cured in three days, I’ll have someone send a horse to you as thanks. What do you say?"

Bai Zhi was delighted. A chance to get a horse for free was a deal she would never refuse. Besides, it was the payment she deserved.

"Since you’re being so generous, my lord, you might as well go all the way and have a carriage prepared for me too. It would save me the trouble of hiring someone to build one."

The Jin guard burst out laughing with a PFFT. "You cheeky girl, give you an inch and you’ll take a mile! You’ve really got some nerve!"

Bai Zhi shrugged, the smile on her face deepening. "We hit it off right away, my lord. You helped me, and I helped you. In a way, that makes us friends, doesn’t it? And between friends, I’m sure you wouldn’t refuse such a small favor, right?"

Meng Nan laughed too. ’This girl,’ he thought, ’is getting more and more interesting.’

He pointed to his face. "I can agree to your terms, but remember: unless my face is healed, the deal is off."

Bai Zhi, of course, was confident in her medical skills. "Once you take the medicine from my prescription, my lord, it will start working tonight. I guarantee you’ll have a good night’s sleep." ’The sores on his face aren’t just foul-smelling, they’re itchy too. He probably hasn’t slept well in days.’

Meng Nan nodded, then turned and boarded his carriage, heading back to the city at a brisk pace.

Upon entering the city, Meng Nan went straight to the largest apothecary, Bai Cao Tang.

The apothecary had a resident physician, a doctor who was fairly well-known in town, by the name of Song Sanqian.

"Is Doctor Song in?" Meng Nan asked the Shopkeeper.

The Shopkeeper recognized Meng Nan and hurried out from behind the counter, bowing with his hands clasped. "My Lord, what brings you here in person? If you needed anything, you could have just sent a summons."

Meng Nan said, "I was just in the area. Have Doctor Song come out for a moment."

The Shopkeeper quickly went to the partition where Doctor Song was and brought out the physician, who had been in the middle of compounding medicine.

Doctor Song was the one who normally treated Meng Nan’s face. He had been prescribing medicine for some time, but there had been no improvement. The doctor was already quite anxious about the situation, so seeing Lord Meng arrive in person made him so frightened his legs began to tremble.

"M-My Lord."

Meng Nan glanced at him sideways, then took the piece of cloth Bai Zhi had given him from his sleeve and held it out to Doctor Song. "Take a look at this prescription."

Seeing that he wasn’t being reprimanded, Doctor Song felt a bit relieved. He quickly took the cloth and unfolded it. On the faded, well-worn fabric was a prescription. It was largely the same as the one he had given Lord Meng, only the dosages were increased, and it included one ingredient that he would never dare to use.

"Wh-where did this come from?" Doctor Song stammered.

Meng Nan ignored the question and asked one of his own. "First, tell me what this prescription is for."

Doctor Song replied, "My Lord, this prescription is more or less the same as the one I gave you. It’s an antidote."

Meng Nan asked again, "Can my poison be cured with this prescription?" He stared intently at Doctor Song, his gaze sharp.

Doctor Song first nodded, then immediately shook his head, his face a mask of alarm.
