Chapter 106: The County Magistrate’s Son
Chapter 106: Chapter 106: The County Magistrate’s Son
The Jin guard helped Bai Zhi up, then turned to scold the maid. "Watch where you’re going! Are you in a hurry to be reborn?"
The maid’s face was pale, and her voice trembled as she spoke. "J-Jin guard, the young master choked on a jujube and can’t cough it up no matter how we pat his back. His face has turned purple! Her Ladyship sent me to find a doctor, and I was in such a hurry that I—"
Hearing this, Bai Zhi grew anxious as well and hurriedly asked, "Where is your young master? Take me to him, quickly."
The maid froze, at a loss for how to answer.
Meng Nan said to the maid, "This young lady knows medicine. Take her with you."
The maid was overjoyed. ’To find a doctor before I’ve even left the residence—the heavens must be looking out for us.’
The maid hurriedly led Bai Zhi toward the inner courtyard, with Meng Nan and the Jin guard following right behind.
Meng Nan thought, ’This girl talks a good game, but I wonder if she has the skills to back it up. This is the perfect chance to find out.’
The inner courtyard was in complete chaos, filled with the frantic cries of women.
"Your Ladyship, the young master can’t breathe! His face is all purple! What are we going to do? Oh, what are we going to do?" a wet nurse cried, kneeling before the County Magistrate’s Wife and staring helplessly at the boy cradled in the woman’s arms.
The boy was still breathing, his eyes wide with panic. He clawed at his own throat, faint, agonized sounds escaping his lips.
The County Magistrate’s Wife was thumping the boy’s back with all her might, but the jujube pit would not come out.
Bai Zhi rushed forward and snatched the boy from her arms. Wrapping her arms around the child’s waist, she clasped her hands into a fist, positioned it just above his navel, and began delivering a series of quick, upward thrusts into his abdomen.
The little boy’s face seemed to twist in even greater pain.
The County Magistrate’s Wife didn’t recognize Bai Zhi. Seeing this stranger treating her precious son so violently, she flew into a rage. "Where did this wench come from? Let go of my son at once!"
The maid who had brought Bai Zhi over addressed the County Magistrate’s Wife. "Your Ladyship, she said she’s a doctor. It was this servant who brought her." The maid was suddenly filled with regret. ’I must have been out of my mind with panic. How could a girl this young possibly be a doctor?’
The County Magistrate’s Wife didn’t believe her either. She shot the maid a furious glare and was about to rush forward to snatch her son back when, with a small POP, a jujube pit as thick as a pinky finger shot out of the boy’s open mouth.
The boy, likely stunned by the ordeal, stared blankly for a moment before letting out a loud WAIL. His cries were surprisingly strong.
Bai Zhi smiled. "It’s all right. He’s all right now." She set the boy down, and a maid immediately whisked him over to the County Magistrate’s Wife.
The County Magistrate’s Wife was overjoyed to see her son was well. She pulled him into her arms and fussed over him for a long time. Only after confirming that he was truly unharmed did she finally turn her attention to Bai Zhi. "Are you really a doctor?"
Bai Zhi shook her head. "I wouldn’t presume to call myself a doctor. I just happen to know a little about emergency medicine. The young master is a blessed child, protected by the heavens; that is the only reason I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. To have been of service to Your Ladyship and your son is my greatest honor."
The smile on Meng Nan’s face deepened. ’This girl is really something,’ he thought. ’Skillful with her hands, and just as skillful with her words.’
The County Magistrate’s Wife’s face was wreathed in smiles. "I was foolish to doubt you earlier. Please forgive my ignorance. May I ask your name, miss? And where do you live?"
Bai Zhi replied, "To answer Your Ladyship, my name is Bai Zhi. I am from Huangtuo Village, and I came to the government office today to file a complaint."
The County Magistrate’s Wife raised an eyebrow. "Oh? You’re here to file a complaint?" It was only then that she noticed two tall figures standing behind several of the maids.
