Chapter 100: Chapter 100: Where Did the Money Come From?

After finally finishing the last stir-fried dish, Bai Zhi told Hu Feng to take all the food out. She then used the fire in the stove to boil the dumplings.

The news that the village chief had taken Bai Zhi and Zhao Lan to measure a plot for a new house quickly reached the ears of the Bai family members. They couldn’t believe it. In less than a day, the two of them had managed to get a plot of land?

Liu said, "Mother, you have to buy a housing plot with money. Where did they get the money?"

Old Mrs. Bai gritted her teeth and said, "You’re asking me? Who am I supposed to ask? Let’s go. Let’s go have a look. I refuse to believe they managed to save up a secret stash of money right under my nose."

Bai Erzhu hadn’t wanted to get involved in the commotion, but when he saw that Bai Dazhu’s entire family was going, he pulled his son, Bai Fugui, along with them.

He didn’t want them to get some benefit from Zhao Lan and leave him with nothing.

Old Mrs. Bai led the way, followed by the two Bai brothers and Liu, and behind them were her three grandsons. The group of seven was quite an imposing sight.

The villagers on the road couldn’t help but mutter when they saw them, "Look at that. The moment they heard Zhao Lan and Bai Zhi got their own plot of land to build a house, they couldn’t sit still. There’s going to be another scene."

"What’s there to make a scene about? The family’s already been divided. What right do they have to cause trouble? Besides, Zhao Lan and Bai Zhi are at Hu Changlin’s house right now. Do they think they’ll get anything good out of going there? With Hu Feng’s build, who among them would dare to make a move? Have you forgotten? How did Bai Dazhu’s arm get broken last time?"

The crowd’s discussion was tinged with ridicule; they were certain the Bai Family wouldn’t get anything good out of this visit either.

Old Mrs. Bai led her family to the old locust tree, but they didn’t see Zhao Lan or Bai Zhi.

"Was the rumor wrong?" Liu said. She refused to believe that Zhao Lan and Bai Zhi, two women with no relatives or connections in the village, could have managed it. Even if Hu Changlin wanted to help them, he wouldn’t have the ability to get them a plot of land. Not only did you have to pay for a housing plot, but you also had to have the village chief report it to the government office in town. It wasn’t something you could get so easily.

Old Mrs. Bai said, "We’ll find out if it’s a false rumor once we go to Hu Changlin’s house, won’t we?"

The moment he heard "Hu Changlin’s house," Bai Dazhu immediately chickened out. "We have to go to the Hu Family’s again? Can’t we just not go?" The thought of Hu Feng’s ruthlessness that day still made him shudder with lingering fear.

Old Mrs. Bai shot him a sideways glance. "Useless thing! Who said anything about fighting? We’re going there to reason with them. As long as we don’t throw the first punch, you think they’d dare to?"

Bai Erzhu snorted inwardly. ’Reason with them? What reasoning do we have on our side when it comes to Zhao Lan and Bai Zhi?’

Though that’s what he thought, his feet still followed the group to the Hu Family’s house.

Just then, Bai Zhi had just brought the dumplings to the table. The enticing aroma and their unique shape made everyone’s eyes widen. "These are dumplings?" Zhao Lan asked.

Bai Zhi nodded. "Mhm, these are dumplings. Go on, try some."

The ’family’ picked up their chopsticks, about to grab a dumpling to taste, when they heard the familiar shouting of certain people from outside.

Hu Changlin frowned. "Why are they here?"

Bai Zhi put down her chopsticks and sighed. "The news about us measuring the land must have reached their ears. They’ve come to get to the bottom of it."

Hu Changlin sighed. "These Bai family members are truly shameless. The family has already been divided. What do your affairs have to do with them?"

Bai Zhi looked up at Hu Changlin and said, "Uncle Hu, if they ask where the money to buy the land came from, please say it was yours. Don’t let it slip, or they’ll start flinging mud at my mother and me."

She thought for a moment, then added, "Uncle Hu, please go get two ingots of silver, each weighing ten taels, and keep them on you. Later, just follow my lead."
