Chapter 561: Chapter 561: The Truth of the Matter (11)

So, even if her son refused to acknowledge her, she couldn’t say a word. If she hadn’t selfishly wished for her child to have a better life back then, they wouldn’t have ended up in this situation.

Of everyone there, the most furious was Caleb Grayson. Yuna Sullivan was the person who had harmed his sister—the one who had indirectly caused her death all those years ago.

And now, his family was tied by marriage to the relatives of his enemy. He was furious. Utterly furious. This agony and rage made him instantly understand why his adopted son refused to acknowledge his birth parents.

Mika Summers could feel it—the way everyone was looking at her and her parents had changed. Every second she remained felt as agonizing as sitting on pins and needles.

She got to her feet, pulled the still-sobbing Una Sullivan up from the sofa, and said hurriedly to Caleb Grayson, "Mom, Dad, I’m sorry. I think I need to take my parents and leave now."

With that, she grabbed Una Sullivan with one hand and Joseph Summers with the other, disregarding everything as she marched toward the front door.

Seeing this, Aiden Avery moved to stand and follow, but Tristan Grayson was a step ahead of him and ran out first. A flicker of awkwardness crossed Aiden’s face for just a moment before his cool, detached expression returned.

Outside the Grayson residence, Mika Summers practically shoved her parents into the car. She opened the driver’s door to get in, but Tristan Grayson, who had caught up to them, seized her arm. "I’ll drive."

"Tristan, after something like this, you should stay and be with your parents."

"Tiana is there to keep Mom and Dad company. The person I should be with right now is you." They had come so far to finally be together, and he knew just how arduous that journey had been. He would not leave her alone to overthink things, and he would not let this drive a wedge between them.

’No matter who she is or what kind of relatives she has, she is my wife! She is the mother of my son. She is the woman I’m sworn to protect with my very life.’

"I don’t need you here."

Tristan pulled her forcefully into his embrace, his voice trembling as he comforted her in a low tone. "Honey, please, don’t fight with me over this. It has nothing to do with us."

"How can it have nothing to do with us? You heard everything. Yuna Sullivan and my mom..."

"Even if Yuna Sullivan and your mom are sisters, what does that have to do with us? Honey, you’re thinking too much."

"But... how am I supposed to face your parents now?" ’And how could I ever face my brother...?’

’Things could never go back to the way they were. From now on, what would she have left besides guilt whenever she saw her brother?’

Watching her daughter and son-in-law argue, Una Sullivan got out of the car and slapped herself across the face. "It’s all my fault. This is all my fault. It’s all my fault! Mika, please, don’t fight with Tristan because of this. If it comes to that, your father and I will go home. We’ll never show our faces to you again."

Mika pushed Tristan away and ran to her mother. She hugged Una Sullivan tightly, crying as she spoke, "Mom, what are you doing? How could this be your fault? I’m not blaming you..."

"Mika, it’s all my fault... It’s all my fault..."

"No, Mom, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I know this isn’t your fault, and that it has nothing to do with us. But whenever I think of my brother, it just hurts so much. What are we supposed to do when we see him in the future?"

"As long as he’s living a good life, that’s all that matters. It doesn’t matter if he won’t acknowledge your father and me. All I hope for is his future happiness."
