Divine Milking System
Chapter 521 | The Calibration of Pain
Chapter 521: 521 | The Calibration of Pain
I focused on the notification and accepted the rank up, and for a moment my entire body went hot, like someone had poured warm honey through my veins, and then the sensation faded and left behind something different. Something stronger.
◆ RANK UP ◆
Endurance [C] → [B]
New baseline established. Continue training to progress.
"Well?" Vale looked up from his tablet.
"B-rank Endurance." I flexed my hands, feeling the difference. My body felt lighter. More durable. Like someone had upgraded my frame from aluminum to steel. "I can feel it."
"Good. Now we can really get started."
I stared at him. "That wasn’t getting started?"
"That was calibration. I needed to know your recovery rate, your failure thresholds, your essence consumption efficiency." He smiled, and it was the smile of someone who had just calculated exactly how hard he could hit something without breaking it permanently. "You can recover from anything I do to you. You understand what that means?"
I understood. My stomach dropped about six inches.
"You’re going to hurt me."
"I’m going to train you the way I trained myself. The way nobody has ever trained a student, because nobody else has a student who can heal from anything." He walked to the equipment rack and pulled down two wooden training swords, tossing one to me without warning. "Catch."
I caught it. The wood was heavier than expected, balanced near the hilt, weighted for realism.
"I’m going to teach you to fight," Vale said. "Real fighting. Not academy nonsense with padded weapons and mandatory safety protocols. I’m going to break your bones and tear your muscles and beat you unconscious, and then you’re going to drink your milk and we’re going to do it again." He settled into a stance that looked casual and probably masked twenty years of muscle memory. "You have a problem. You’re strong but you don’t know how to fight. You have abilities but you don’t know how to use them under pressure. You have a squad but you don’t know how to lead when everything goes to hell." He pointed the wooden sword at my chest. "I’m going to fix all of that. By the time I’m done with you, you’ll be the most dangerous unranked hunter in the academy. Maybe the country." He tilted his head like he was doing quick mental math. "Probably the country. Depends on how much you’re willing to bleed."
I looked at the sword in my hand. Looked at him.
"And if you push too hard? If the essence doesn’t heal everything?"
"Then I’ll know your limits." His smile was the smile of someone who understood exactly how dark the world was and had made peace with his place in it. "Attack me."
I attacked.
The wooden sword connected with nothing. Vale was beside me, then behind me, then somewhere I couldn’t track, and then the world exploded into white light and I was on my back with my ribs screaming and his sword pressed against my throat.
"Too slow," he said. "Again."
I got up. I attacked. He broke my wrist with a casual twist and I screamed and he handed me a cup and I drank and my wrist healed and he gestured for me to attack again.
Again.
Again.
Again.
By eight AM I had been knocked unconscious twice, had my arm dislocated once, my ribs cracked three times, and my nose broken so thoroughly that the blood was still drying on my shirt despite the healing. Every injury had been fixed with essence. Every cup had tasted like copper and victory and the specific flavor of becoming stronger.
Vale hadn’t been touched once.
"Better," he said, and this time he meant it. "You’re starting to read my positioning. Another month and you might actually land a hit."
I lay on the mat, breathing hard, staring at the ceiling. My essence reserves were empty. Six cups, consumed. Eighteen days on my clock had dropped to seventeen and a half. The math was brutal but the results were real.
"Monterey," I said.
"Monterey." Vale sat down next to me, cross-legged, his wooden sword across his knees. "You’re going to face something in that gate that your formation can’t handle. Something Belle won’t see coming. Something Blair can’t burn fast enough. When that happens, you need to be the one who fills the gap." He looked at me, and for once there was no humor in his eyes, no detachment, just the weight of someone who had seen a lot of people die and wanted me not to be one of them. "The milk heals your body. It doesn’t heal the people you’re leading. If you want to keep them alive, you need to be strong enough to cover their weaknesses. All of them. All at once."
"I’m one person."
"You’re one person with infinite growth potential, three stolen abilities, and a squad that will follow you into hell because you’ve already proven you’ll jump off a cliff to save them." He stood, brushing off his pants. "Saturday. Santa Barbara. Bring Naomi. Yumi wants to see what happens when you resonate with someone who actually matters to you." He walked toward the door. "And Monroe?"
"Yeah?"
"The third interesting thing about you." He paused at the threshold, one hand on the frame. "You don’t break. I’ve been trying for six weeks. You just keep getting up." He looked back at me, and something that might have been pride crossed his face before disappearing behind the sunglasses. "Don’t stop doing that."
He left. The door clicked shut behind him.
I lay on the mat and stared at the ceiling and felt the new strength settling into my bones, C-rank Endurance humming through my system like an engine that had finally been given enough fuel. Seventeen and a half days on my clock. Four cups of essence burned for training. A body that could take anything and heal from it.
The System pulsed in my vision, quiet and patient.
