Divine Emperor of Death
Chapter 5285: Reaching Out
Just as Davis was thinking that Luo Tianming was acting strangely joyful over his action of picking up the messaging talisman and responding, Clara’s familiar voice resounded, momentarily stunning Davis.
"Clara, is that you...?"
He quickly responded, his arms quivering ever so lightly before he held the messaging talisman with a better grip and a hopeful gaze as he brought it near to his face, hoping that it was a projection instead, just so he could see her face.
"Yes, brother." Clara’s voice resounded again, her tone soft and without the authority she usually exuded, "It is I, your disobedient little sister who cursed out loud that you were an abominable Divergent and should die somewhere where I shouldn’t be able to see."
"..."
Davis paused, and then let out an exasperated chuckle, "You know how to speak with humor, now?"
"Not quite, but I’m trying..."
Clara’s voice turned solemn, "I’m reiterating it because I’ve been disobedient again and sent a letter back home using an untraceable Esoteric Art."
Davis’s pupils dilated. He quickly said with his voice lowered.
"This message talisman is not that secure. Where are you? I’ll come to you. We can have a nice brother-sister chat."
"Brother... I’m afraid not."
Clara’s voice halted with a bit of indifference, making Davis hesitate as he considered her situation. She continued.
"If it weren’t for Pill Sovereign Luo Tianming, I might not even have been able to talk to you like this. Fortunately, he was caught and imprisoned by master since he ran around like a suspicious person near the Hexadra Clan’s territory. After I got the truth from him, I’ve kept him imprisoned, hoping we could talk through his messaging talisman. Meeting at this time might completely collapse our moves on the board."
Davis’s gaze flickered in response.
It seemed like Clara was trying to match his moves, but to do that without communicating was a feat that required understanding, which he couldn’t tell if Clara had or lacked since she was away from him for three hundred years.
A cultivator’s memories were stable across eras, allowing them to recall memories, but emotions were forgotten. Even worse, the Transcendent Truth Eyes turned one’s heart into a cold, emotionless machine, detached from mortal vanities and moralities.
Sure, the Celestial Transcendent did say that Clara had grown differently than his own son, but by how much, he couldn’t tell.
There was too much at stake for him to follow Clara’s plan of marrying off one of his sons to Madam Wesley. It was a deal that might’ve moved any family, but not his family.
Unable to comment on it directly, he moved the topic with a light chuckle.
"To make contact with you, it seems like Luo Tianming’s destiny is already on its way to being restored."
Clara’s clear voice resounded, "Master also entertained a similar notion, bestowing me with an amused insight as he vaguely remarked about how there’s some deviation in his destiny and I’ve also taken the time to verify the truth. He did indeed lose his grand destiny to shamanic karmic arts and misfortune. How did you know, brother?"
Her voice turned solemn at the end.
Davis turned speechless. He had just commented without much thought since he knew his little sister was already a person of great destiny the moment she was born different as a Transcendent Truth Eyes Physique owner, since she had been a normal person in a Derailed Fate.
For Luo Tianming to be able to chance upon her should be his fortune, but now his little sister was suspecting him of stealing his destiny.
"Who do you think your brother is?" He scoffed, half-amused and half-offended.
"Good to know my brother hasn’t tainted his hands in such devilish arts." Clara uttered, her voice containing a trace of approval and relief.
"You’re still intent on sealing me, aren’t you?"
"Yes." Came an indifferent answer.
"..."
Davis paused before inwardly sighing. He could barely discern the emotions just from the processed voice alone. The messaging talisman stone didn’t have the ability to transmit emotions even if it could emulate the sound.
He took a moment to recollect himself and then opened his mouth, "And you want to preserve the Davis Family no matter the cost that you would marry one of my sons to a widow?"
"Yes, but she’s not a widow, nor is she legally married to Maxim Wesley. She was brought into the Wesley Family when she was destitute and powerless after battling over the inheritance rights from her father’s lineage in the Trissadra Clan that had abandoned her. Their marriage happened while she was unconscious and bedridden. In other words, she was forced into it because Maxim Wesley clearly noticed her blessings but couldn’t tell what it was. He had forcefully married her, but due to fate’s machinations, irrevocably fell in love with her and became enchanted. Even if she cannot remember it, my eyes can see through it clearly."
Davis’s brows raised, his robes fluttering.
"Your eyes... are quite amazing if they could see the past like this..."
"It doesn’t work like divination, but- mhm, I shouldn’t be telling my prime target about how my physique works..." Clara heaved a breath.
A silent pause ensued between them before she continued, "But all I ask is for a chance for me to protect our family, brother. Should the Davis Family’s non-Divergents deem my plan to be fruitless, then I’ll abide by it and change my ways accordingly. I must strive harder than anyone and don’t have any other option than trusting Madam Wesley- Miriam Trissadra’s power to temporarily gain a foothold in the realm. Other than the bogus marriage, she fulfills everything the Loret Family would require from a bride, so I imagine it is the same for the Davis Family. We don’t have time, especially... you."
Davis blinked, "So you also realize that I’m running out of time?"
"I-"
Clara was about to answer when her purple eyes glowed with a celestial light.
Her eyelids twitched, and she gazed up at the open dome, watching a purple-robed man descend, causing her fists to clench ever so lightly. She could tell he followed the karmic connection between the two messaging talismans, which any karmic expert was capable of, but she had made sure to hide it. However, he had still followed it somehow.
Gazing at him with her limpid eyes, she bit her lips.
"Foolish brother, you’ve made matters worse..."
Davis descended with faint steps as he walked towards her from the air, each step creating ripples across space.
His firm voice resounded in her mind, "Let them watch. You don’t need to worry about me being swallowed whole that you would rather choose to seal me first in order to protect me instead. Don’t you believe in your big brother? It’s enough that you studied and cultivated under the tutelage of your master for three hundred years. Let’s return home."
He reached out his hand once he was in front of her, causing Clara to force a pained smile.
"You would be bringing disaster to the family by just bringing me there, so I can’t."
"..."
Davis’s hand was left hanging for what seemed to be a long time.
All he could see was the silhouette of a little child refusing to take his hands even though she wanted someone to understand her and not look at her like she was a monster, but it was different this time, where she saw very little hope, perhaps even none at all.
Her emotions couldn’t be anymore clear to him. She was desperate to save him by sealing him, ultimately barring others from refining him and ending him once and for all.
The scenery changed, and all his focus was back in the obsidian flying palace, his sapphire eyes glinting with a hazy mist.
The soul body had been destroyed. He had no idea if it was Clara or the Celestial Transcendent who destroyed it since he had been quickly entrapped by the formation prison that also imprisoned Luo Tianming. In the end, he didn’t get to exchange words with both of them by much.
"My sweet little sister, your big brother is sorry for still being weak that you aren’t even able to realistically consider returning home..." He uttered with a helpless laugh, causing Evelynn, who was patiently listening by his side, to hold him in comfort.
