Diary of a Criminal Investigator

Chapter 988: Crime Scene Investigation Report

“From our perspective, the possibility that the other party refrigerated the corpse to conceal it is quite low.”

Wang Song suddenly interjected.

“As for the reason, it’s simple. If the perpetrator wanted to hide the corpse, they wouldn’t have dismembered it and dumped it in the warehouse of the logistic park. Clearly, such behavior indicates they don’t care if the body is discovered.”

“Not necessarily.”

Song Mingguang continued, “The killer cut the body into 128 pieces for some specific reason. Killing the victim might not have been the true intent of the perpetrator, otherwise, there would be no need to go through such trouble transporting the body to the logistic park and arranging it this way.”

“Moreover, the corpse has already decayed, and we still cannot determine the identity of the victim.”

“You can share your opinions later, let the Forensic Doctor continue.”

Li Donglin interrupted the discussion between the two and directed his attention to the Forensic Doctor to continue the report.

The Forensic Doctor nodded and resumed reporting.

“Cause of death, although the corpse has decayed, we didn’t find any physical harm on it. However, during our independent analysis, we discovered that the victim’s stomach still contained blood, which included cyanide.”

Hmm?

Poisoned?

“Cyanide? Are you sure?”

Li Donglin knew the Forensic Doctor wouldn’t be mistaken when claiming the presence of cyanide in the corpse. He was just shocked, as cyanide isn’t usually easy to acquire.

“Confirmed!”

The Forensic Doctor operated the projector, “Even though the corpse has decayed, we detected a significant amount of cyanide in the stomach contents.”

“These cyanides must have entered the body with food, otherwise, if it was skin infection or injection, it wouldn’t have been found in the stomach.”

Everyone present was aware of cyanide’s lethality; just one gram can cause instant death.

Cases involving poisoning were investigated by this task force; although this team hadn’t been involved in similar major cases, everyone had encountered them in their respective units. However, poisoning cases are relatively rare.

Generally speaking, the probability of occurrence of group poisoning is higher compared to individual poisoning.

Lu Chuan had previously come across such a case in records, which happened in Haizhou City 20 years ago, a rather typical case.

A village suffered a mass poisoning incident because of a land contract dispute, where someone placed rat poison at the village’s water source.

Various poisoning cases have occurred and some even caused significant social impact.

For example, there was a thallium poisoning case at a certain college.

A talented student in the dormitory was poisoned by someone else.

This student had a promising future and bright life, but his entire life was ruined by this poisoning case, and due to problems with evidence evaluation, the case remained unsolved.

“Is there anything else to add?”

Li Donglin didn’t expect the cause of death to be cyanide poisoning.

“No, not at the moment.”

Since the body had been dismembered, there was less need for a complete autopsy by the Forensic Doctor.

The killer had already dissected the body, requiring only simple chemical analysis to be done here.

The corpse’s severe decay makes it less manageable compared to handling a typical body.

During yesterday’s fragmentary handling of the decaying body, some flesh directly fell off, making it impossible to bring the pieces back intact.

Luckily, the outdoor temperature is quite low now, slowing down the rate of decay, which helps somewhat.

Nonetheless, handling it remains difficult and distressing for the Forensic Doctor.

Imagine the body being cut into 128 pieces, each piece less than two centimeters thick.

Unlike a plank, remaining unchanged after cutting, the body continues to decay.

The killer might have frozen the body before dismembering it, enabling the thin pieces to maintain their complete shape initially, but it’s a different story post-decay.

Especially with the organ parts.

The organ handling presented the most challenge during autopsy yesterday, as some organs were completely decayed, while others although intact, were fragmented, making reassembly difficult, yet necessary work for the Forensic Doctor.

With the introduction finished, Li Donglin turned his gaze to Lu Chuan, wondering if there were any significant discoveries at his end.

Lu Chuan knew it was his cue to report without needing Li Donglin to mention his name, so he stood up proactively.

“Let me talk about the clues from the Crime Scene Investigation.”

Yesterday, Lu Chuan had prepared thoroughly; upon starting the projector, photographs of the scene taken by him appeared.

“Everyone look, these are some photos I took in the abandoned warehouse yesterday. They show footprints left by the suspect.”

Footprints!

Although footprints can’t directly identify the suspect’s identity, through Footprint Identification and Analysis, everyone knows that Lu Chuan can approximate the suspect’s age, height, and even occupational traits.

“Based on the footprint analysis at the scene, the suspect’s height ranges from 165 to 168 centimeters.”

Upon hearing this, everyone knew the height range pointed to a higher probability of the suspect being female, as fewer males fall within this range.

No one spoke, and Lu Chuan continued his report.

“The footprints found at the crime scene are consistent, with the shoe size being 37, the arch quite high, slightly exhibiting an inward angle pattern…”

Lu Chuan elaborated on some details regarding the footprints.

“The gender determination from footprints is not theoretically 100% accurate.”

Identifying the footprint owner’s gender theoretically can’t be pinpointed with certainty.

Though the footprints found at the scene are similar to those typical of women, some men do exhibit similar features.

While most women tend to exhibit inward angle patterns, and men slight outward patterns, not every man necessarily walks in an outward stance.

“Statistically speaking, the chance that the suspect is female is higher.”

Lu Chuan proceeded to photos.

“Though, based on factors like step angle and other data clues, it’s uncertain whether the suspect is female, you can look at these photos.”

These additional footprint photos…

Wang Song stared for a while, “Are there any differences from the previous ones?”
