Diary of a Criminal Investigator
Chapter 913: Division of Labor and Happy Killing
After the lock was smashed, the young guy next to him stepped up and pulled open the two cargo doors.
There weren’t the imagined splashes of blood; inside the cargo box were a few random items piled up, plus some wooden racks.
A heavy smell of paint was laced with faint streaks of blood.
Lu Chuan frowned, put on gloves and shoe covers, and got ready to go up and check.
"Director Zhao, have people seal off the scene. Everyone else, move back."
Zhao Zhigao had clearly smelled the blood too. It was weak, but it was definitely there.
The Boss of the decorating company and the young guys saw this and immediately retreated to the back. A few of them whispered among themselves, not daring to speak loudly.
After all, when Lu Chuan had come earlier he’d just chatted, asked about the situation, his attitude very easygoing.
But the moment they smelled blood, none of them could stay calm anymore.
The police had already come several times in the past few days, investigating Li Baowei.
They hadn’t said what exactly it was about, but everyone knew it had to be connected to that murder case people had been talking about recently.
It was just that on the day of the crime, Li Baowei really had been in the dorm drinking with a few friends. They could all testify for him, so everyone figured the police must have misunderstood something.
But looking at it now, that didn’t seem to be the case.
"Fuck, Boss, no way, did Li Baowei really kill someone?"
The Boss craned his neck, watching Lu Chuan search for something inside the cargo box. "How the hell should I know? He’s with you guys every day. If you don’t know, how the fuck am I supposed to know?"
"Weren’t we just driving this truck the last couple days to deliver materials to that client? You didn’t notice anything then?"
Chen gave a bitter smile. "Didn’t notice anything. Just felt the smell was kinda off, but none of us thought much of it. Who the hell would’ve known..."
While the people outside were whispering, Lu Chuan’s inspection was extremely meticulous.
"Old Zhao, UV lamp!"
To the naked eye the truck box still looked fairly normal, but up on the canopy Lu Chuan found two tiny brown marks.
They looked like dried bloodstains.
Zhao Zhigao went back into the truck, took out the UV lamp, and handed it to Lu Chuan.
And once he shone it...
The entire box lit up with fluorescent reactions, a purple glow all over as if it had once been soaked in fresh blood and then washed clean.
"Shit!"
"What the hell is that?"
"Why’s it glowing?"
"Fuck..."
The Boss and the few laborers in the back were dumbfounded.
Same with Zhao Zhigao.
Bloodstains are generally very hard to erase.
Even if you wash them with water, traces linger for a long time; it’s just that you can’t see them with the naked eye.
Of course, it’s not impossible to get rid of bloodstains. The reason blood can still show a fluorescent reaction under UV light after being wiped is that it contains large amounts of iron ions.
If you use chemicals to remove those iron ions, that’ll do it.
But clearly, Li Baowei didn’t have that kind of capability.
"Get the truck back."
More detailed testing would require driving the truck back to the Criminal Investigation Team in Quanzhou City, where the tech unit could directly analyze these residual bloodstains.
Lu Chuan immediately reported to Li Donglin.
"Director Li, we’ve found the primary crime scene. Li Baowei should be the key suspect. He killed Wang Jingya in the cargo box of a truck belonging to the decorating company."
"Also, Qin Xiaohui should be an accomplice. That partial print found in the woodpile at the crime scene, after comparison, turns out to belong to Qin Xiaohui."
Inside the interrogation room, Wang Song and Wang Chuanmin had also received the relevant information.
After taking the call outside and coming back in, the moment Wang Chuanmin re-entered the interrogation room, Qin Xiaohui could see his face had changed.
When he’d taken the call just now, the door had only been pulled to, leaving a crack. A few fragments of the conversation had already reached Qin Xiaohui’s ears.
And that crack was deliberate on Wang Chuanmin’s part.
"Qin Xiaohui, you must have heard some of what I was told on the phone."
Wang Chuanmin had his assistant bring over the photo of the partial fingerprint found in the kitchen.
"The one who cooked the body in West Family Valley Village, Beiwang Town, was actually you, not Li Baowei, wasn’t it?"
"I..."
"Don’t rush to deny it. See this fingerprint photo? Our experts have confirmed this print is yours!"
"I..."
Wang Chuanmin didn’t give her any chance to speak. He wanted to smash through Qin Xiaohui’s psychological defenses in one go.
"On the night of the crime, you tailed the taxi that Wang Jingya was in and followed it to near Chenyang District."
Wang Chuanmin just kept talking.
With the information sent back by Lu Chuan, and given that he’d been handling the case all along, he could more or less reconstruct how the two of them carried it out.
"That day, using some excuse, you tricked Wang Jingya into getting in the truck, then knocked her out and moved her into Li Baowei’s box truck."
"As for Li Baowei... after work he sat drinking with his coworkers, creating a step-by-step alibi."
"Then probably around midnight he came out to meet you, and the two of you killed her in the truck box..."
"After the killing, Li Baowei slipped back to his dorm. Because everyone who’d been drinking with him that night was hammered, he used that time gap to build an alibi."
"Once he came back... he played mahjong with them right up till dawn."
"The next day, after you moved the body, you handled it out at West Family Valley Village in Beiwang Town. After Li Baowei dropped the body off there, he left immediately. The one who actually cooked the corpse—that was you, wasn’t it?"
Qin Xiaohui was completely limp in her chair now.
Wang Chuanmin’s reconstruction wasn’t perfect, but it was basically on the mark.
On the other side, Li Baowei had also confessed to the murder.
"What we can’t figure out is how you and Qin Xiaohui ended up working together."
Li Baowei’s face was expressionless. "She came to me."
His motive for killing was actually very simple: love curdled into hatred.
To pursue Wang Jingya, Li Baowei waited outside the modeling studio where she worked every day, just to see her off after work.
But once he realized that his supposedly pure, untouched goddess was actually a piece of trash who’d sleep with anyone as long as they had money, his mindset completely flipped.
He’d chased her for so long, saved up over a hundred thousand yuan, and he was willing to give it all to Wang Jingya in one go, yet she wouldn’t even let him touch her hand.
"You know what she said to me?"
Li Baowei laughed miserably. "She said even if she had to sleep with a dog, it still wouldn’t be my turn to touch her."
Elsewhere.
"Why?" After realizing that her joint murder with Li Baowei had been completely exposed, Qin Xiaohui’s mood actually calmed down.
"Why the fuck is it that after those rich bastards finish playing with that slut, they never come looking for me again?"
