Chapter 1036: Chapter 487: She Is a Proper Person (Second Update)

Lawrence Winters spoke with absolute certainty, not allowing Mrs. Fang to make excuses.

Mrs. Fang looked toward Mr. Zhuge as if seeking help.

Mr. Zhuge was a bit curious as well; he pondered and said, "If we want to resolve Miss Tang’s problem, I’m afraid we’ll have to start with her mother. If Mrs. Fang has photos, that would be ideal."

Mrs. Fang had no choice but to stand up and say, "I’ll go upstairs and look. Such old stuff, who knows which dusty corner it’s been shoved into. You two wait here, I’ll be right back."

Speaking as she walked toward the stairs, Mrs. Fang went up to the second floor.

Lawrence and Mr. Zhuge sat downstairs, both looking thoughtful.

Lawrence replayed Mrs. Fang’s earlier words from beginning to end in her mind and still felt that nothing in what she’d said could logically lead to the conclusion that Miss Tang was "not human."

She probed, asking Mr. Zhuge, "Fellow Daoist Zhuge, what do you think? Is this related to the Celestial Path Sect, or is it just a domestic ethics dispute? Shouldn’t they be looking for marriage counseling, or a restraining order from the court?"

Mr. Zhuge smiled. "Mrs. Fang hasn’t finished yet. Fellow Daoist Lawrence, don’t be impatient."

Lawrence had no choice but to fall silent.

After a while, Mrs. Fang came down from the second floor beaming. "You’re really lucky today! Normally when I look for something, ten days to half a month might not be enough. This time I practically found it in one go."

She was holding a rather old-looking photo album in her hand.

Ever since smartphones became ubiquitous, photo albums have practically gone extinct.

Lawrence looked at it like an antique, watching as Mr. Zhuge took the album from Mrs. Fang’s hand; she and Mr. Zhuge started flipping through it together.

Mrs. Fang pointed things out from the side, smiling as she said, "This is what our Mr. Yu looked like when he was young. Isn’t he handsome?"

The photos were in color. A moderately built, very good-looking young man stood on a tennis court with a racket in hand, just about to serve.

He turned to look at the camera, his eyes seemingly full of unspoken words, soft and tender.

Lawrence chuckled. "He’s looking at the person taking his picture, right? That look—that’s how you look at someone you’re in love with... He must have been crazy about her..."

"...Is it that serious? I can’t see it. My husband has a very good temper and doesn’t know how to say no—he’s nice to everyone. But he’s very devoted to his family and dotes on the children." Mrs. Fang dismissed it, then proceeded to praise her husband up and down.

Lawrence once again: "..."

A man who already has a mistress, and his wife can still call him "very devoted to his family"—her husband filter really has no limits.

Mr. Zhuge said nothing, slowly turning the pages of the album.

The earlier photos were all of Mr. Yu and his family; Mrs. Fang was nowhere to be seen, nor was Miss Tang’s mother.

It was that kind of wealthy overseas Chinese family from decades ago.

Mr. Yu’s parents ran a budget restaurant. Their social status abroad wasn’t high, but they had money.

Because of that, Mr. Yu had the chance to receive an excellent education, attend famous schools, shed the imprint of his parents’ class, and enter higher social circles.

Following the trajectory shown in the album, they watched him go from a fresh-faced teenager to his high school graduation, then the graduation dance, then university—attending class, playing in tennis matches—and later his university graduation, wearing academic regalia and laughing happily with his family.

It wasn’t until the last few pages of the album that they finally saw a young woman with a long single braid, dressed in proper old-fashioned pants, appear in the photos.

She smiled serenely, holding a towel in her hand, looking at Mr. Yu with careful attention, wanting to wipe his sweat.

Mr. Yu, head lowered, looked at her with a gentle smile. Sunlight poured down from above them, and because of the contrast in light and shadow, the silhouettes at their feet showed the two of them leaning close together, as beautiful as an oil painting.

Lawrence felt a jolt in her chest.

This Miss Tang’s mother and Miss Tang herself looked unbelievably alike...

Aside from their completely different temperaments, they were like they’d been carved from the same mold.

Lawrence rubbed her thumb over the photo and suddenly asked Mrs. Fang, "...You’ve seen Miss Tang’s mother’s photos before, haven’t you? Many times, I’d guess?"

Mrs. Fang shook her head, looking a bit uncomfortable. "No, I’ve only seen them a few times. Back when Mr. Yu and I had just married, I caught a few glances while sorting his things."

"But the edges of this photo show very clear wear marks, and judging from the size of the finger traces, they don’t look like a man’s fingers—they should be a woman’s."

As Lawrence spoke, she moved quickly, one hand closing around Mrs. Fang’s wrist. With a slight exertion of force, she pressed Mrs. Fang’s fingers against the edge of the photo.

She nodded in satisfaction. "Sure enough, they match your fingerprints. You’ve definitely looked at this photo many times. Which means you must remember very clearly what Miss Tang’s mother looks like."

"So when you first met Miss Tang, you really didn’t think she resembled anyone at all? Or did you already suspect it then, and that’s why you hired a private detective to investigate her? Hmm?"

In other words, Mrs. Fang’s reasons weren’t as she’d just claimed. Instead... she’d wanted to investigate Miss Tang’s identity, right?

Yet earlier, Mrs. Fang had acted like it was the first time she’d ever seen Miss Tang, even crying as she begged Lawrence... It was way too fake.

When she said her husband was old enough to be Miss Tang’s father, she’d meant it literally, hadn’t she?

But now they already knew that this Miss Tang was not Mr. Yu’s daughter—Mrs. Fang had checked, and the organizing committee knew as well.

In modern society, verifying a parent–child relationship couldn’t be easier.
