Demon Slayer: Breath of Desire

Chapter 239: Don’t You Dare Run

  • Next Chapter

RUN!

I HAVE TO RUN!

In that instant, devoured by fear, that was the only thought left in Muzan’s mind.

His body began to convulse as lumps of flesh bulged beneath his skin. The Demon King was preparing to split into 1,800 pieces.

But he couldn’t!

Or rather...

HE COULDN’T AFFORD TO SPLIT!

If it were only Yoriichi, he’d have done it already. He’d scatter into thousands of pieces and hide for a couple of centuries.

It wouldn’t be the first time.

The problem was Marcus!

If he tried to split apart, that hungry vampire would pounce and snatch up the pieces to eat them.

’NAKIME!’

’OPEN THE DOOR!!’

A wooden door flew open beneath his feet, and candlelight lit his pale face through the crack.

Muzan didn’t think twice and tried to hurl himself inside.

But it was already too late.

Swish

The blue radiance lunged on top of him and seized him firmly by the waist.

Marcus spat on the ground.

"The same trick again?"

Boom!

Propelled by godspeed and demonization, Marcus rammed into Muzan and the two shot off like a meteor.

"You dared to raid my house?! Today I’m tearing a chunk out of you!"

In midair, Muzan gripped his chin with both hands to keep Marcus’s mouth from closing shut. At the same time, his eighteen whips stabbed furiously into Marcus’s body.

"GET OFF! GET OFF!"

But Marcus had no intention of letting go.

His teeth snapped open and shut in front of Muzan’s face, like a zombie desperate for flesh.

Until the two of them slammed into the houses along the roadside.

Boom!

Forcing their way through four homes, the charge finally came to a halt amid rubble and dust, blotting out the moonlight.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

All that could be heard was the sound of two beasts tearing at each other in the middle of the ruins.

This sudden scene left the Hashira stunned.

Mitsuri stood there gaping at the smoking ruins. "Was that... was that Marcus-kun?"

Sanemi, black blood oozing from his face, began to grin until his teeth showed.

"Hahaha, Muzan’s scared... Muzan’s screaming in pain!"

Obanai arrived at the scene carrying Tokito. He sniffed the air and frowned.

"What happened? Why does it smell like urine?"

Tokito lifted his head with effort and stared doubtfully at the Yoriichi Type Zero that Marcus had left behind before the collision.

"I don’t know... I only saw Marcus ram into Muzan."

Just as the four of them stood dazed, a roar full of fear and rage rang out across the entire village.

"I TOLD YOU TO GET OFF!!!"

Boom

The ruins exploded. A shockwave overturnewd the rubble and flung Marcus through the air.

"Aaah!!"

Letting out a long scream, Marcus, his arms torn to shreds and his body drenched in blood, fell in front of a stunned Obanai and Tokito.

Obanai breathed in the thick smell of blood, his face confused.

"What... what did they just toss over here?"

Tokito looked at the person lying face-down.

"Marcus..."

Obanai went quiet for a second. "...Is he dead?"

"Do you all want me dead that badly?" Marcus grumbled, pulling his head out of the rubble. "Honestly, you were so close, and you didn’t even think to catch me."

Tokito stared at his mangled leg, and Obanai blinked with his blind eyes.

How were they supposed to catch him?

"MARCUS-KUN!!"

Hearing Mitsuri’s tearful cry, full of terror and fear, Marcus stopped chatting.

He got up, regenerated his arms, and caught the figure that threw herself at him against his chest.

Mitsuri buried her face in his chest, wrapping her arms around his neck, crying like a little girl.

"Waaaah... M-Marcus-kun... I thought... I-I thought I’d never see you again... WAAAAH!"

Marcus chuckled and patted her on the back to comfort her.

"It’s over now. I’m here, everything’s going to be fine."

Right after, he gave her plump backside a light smack.

Smack

That sound plunged the whole place into complete silence.

Mitsuri stopped crying, freezing in place, her face burning.

Obanai couldn’t see, but when Kaburamaru hissed in his ear, he felt his body burst into flames.

The heat radiating off him was such that Tokito frowned. In that very instant, Obanai’s Demon Slayer Mark awakened.

Several seconds passed before Mitsuri finally lifted her face slightly from Marcus’s chest, sobbing, her nose still red and tears still hanging from her lashes.

"Ma-Marcus-kun... don’t do it here..."

"Do what here?" Marcus smiled at her.

Mitsuri bit her lip without answering, her eyes moist and her ears red.

Marcus gave her a pat on the head.

"Why are you so perverted? I’m giving you a shot."

"Eh~? A... A shot?" Mitsuri craned her neck to look at her own backside.

Sure enough, there was a syringe stuck in it with a trace of clear liquid. Realizing her misunderstanding, she wished the ground would swallow her whole.

Sanemi frowned. "Marcus, is this...?"

"The poison in you is like Muzan’s curse," Marcus explained, tossing aside the empty syringe. "The ’resignation letter’ Tamayo developed deactivates Muzan’s cells. It works perfectly on you all."

Understanding that the formula cured the poison, Sanemi pulled the metal box from his chest, took the only syringe, and jabbed it roughly into Obanai’s neck.

"Shinazugawa! What are you doing?! You only brought one!" Obanai protested.

"You were about to be brain-dead," Sanemi replied, emptying the contents. "We save who we can. I’ll go see if the village head has another."

After saying that, he looked at Tokito, whose breathing was fading, entrusted Marcus with holding Muzan off, and took off running. But he’d barely taken a step when he felt a prick at the back of his neck.

An icy liquid flowed through his blood vessels, dispelling the suffocating heat of the poison and clearing his mind all at once.

Sanemi touched the back of his neck and found a small syringe; when he turned around, he saw another one lodged in Tokito’s shoulder.

Marcus, dispersing the Koketsu Arrows he’d shot the antidotes with, spoke calmly:

"Remember to tell Kagaya to pay me for this later. Mitsuri’s is free, of course."

"Marcus-kun~..." Mitsuri’s eyes shone like stars, still with a tear on her nose but wearing a wide smile.

"ENOUGH!!!"

A roar loaded with humiliation and fury cut off the conversation.

Immediately the Hashira gripped their katanas all at once.

Only Marcus kept his smile, watching the shadow at the edge of the rubble.

"I thought you’d have taken the chance to run by now."

"What’s wrong? Not scared anymore?"
