Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child
Chapter 60: The Memories That Remained
Freezing rain washed the ash and blood from the ruined stone. Kōya stood alone in the cavernous chamber. Broken white masonry, shattered ancient weapons, and collapsed marble pillars littered the flooded floor.
Zeref was gone.
The Lightning Demon Peer had fallen beneath the Hero Sword, but his ancient power lingered.
The polished crystal rested above the ruined stone altar, pulsing. Once. Twice.
Kōya stared at the vessel. The volatile Demonic essence that had escaped Zeref’s dissolving body flowed steadily into the cold stone. Erratic streams of violet-black energy moved through the damp air, pulled toward an invisible current. The physical weight of it pressed against Kōya’s senses. The fragmented echoes of a long life remained inside that stone. Memories.
He stepped toward the altar.
The dark crystal brightened. A psychic pulse struck Kōya’s mind, halting him. The ruined Lair vanished.
The darkness coalesced into a narrow corridor constructed of polished black stone. Zeref stood within it. He was younger than the Demon Peer who had just perished. His armor lacked its usual ornate spikes, and his massive leathery wings folded tightly against his back.
A heavy iron communication ring rested in his clawed hand. An arcane symbol glowed across its smooth surface. Zeref lifted it toward his mouth. A distorted voice emerged from the iron.
"Report."
Zeref lowered his head. "The seed remains dormant."
The memory shifted, pulling Kōya into a dimly lit chamber. A stone table lay before Zeref, scattered with classified documents, raw crystals, and jagged fragments of magical instruments.
The same distorted voice spoke through the ring. "And the human girl?"
"Growing."
"Her Heroic Mana?"
"Increasing."
"Her soul?"
"Stable. Unaware."
"Then continue the observation," the voice commanded.
"For how long?" Zeref asked.
"For exactly as long as necessary." The voice carried the weight of a threat. "Do not interfere with the natural development."
Zeref paused. "And if the curse awakens prematurely?"
"Bring her immediately to the Lair."
The memory ended. Kōya stood back inside the flooded chamber, drawing a heavy breath. The dark crystal continued its steady glow.
"You were ordered," Kōya whispered, staring at the vessel.
The next memory began. Zeref walked through a subterranean passage, shadowed by two armed demon guards. Zeref stopped before an iron-reinforced door and raised one hand. The door swung open, revealing a chamber filled with darkness. A single magical circle covered the stone floor, glowing with pale light.
Zeref stepped inside the circle, leaving the guards in the corridor. "Remain here."
One demon bowed. "Yes, Lord Zeref."
The heavy door closed. Standing alone in the dark, Zeref removed the communication ring from his finger and activated it with a surge of mana. "The curse has matured further."
"How much further?" the distorted voice answered.
"Enough that I can begin preparing the logistics for extraction."
"Not yet."
Zeref scowled. "You said—"
"I said when the time is right," the voice interrupted. "The human girl is still developing."
Zeref clenched his fist. "Her arcane growth is extraordinary."
"Which is precisely why you will patiently wait."
Zeref reluctantly lowered his head. "As ordered."
The memory faded into blackness, replaced by a starless sky. Zeref stood upon a high ridge overlooking a massive battlefield. Demon forces moved through the darkness below, while unnatural fire burned across the distant hills. Zeref watched the army from the ridge, noting the tactical shift. The demons were no longer advancing; they were withdrawing.
A Demon Peer lay dead several hundred meters from the ridge, its heavy body torn apart by holy light. Zeref looked down at the corpse. "Another one has fallen."
A nearby demon commander lowered his head. "The Hero killed him."
Zeref’s posture stiffened. "Seiya."
The commander nodded. "The Hero and the human woman are still fighting in the valley."
Zeref looked toward the burning battlefield. Mizuki stood shoulder-to-shoulder beside Seiya in the mud. Demons rushed toward them from every direction. Seiya raised his legendary sword, a beacon of holy light, while Mizuki unleashed a burst of arcane power. The two fought as a synchronized unit, forcing the demon horde backward.
Zeref watched from the high ridge, making no attempt to intervene. Instead, his gaze tracked a specialized group approaching the couple from the opposite side of the valley. Four elite demons carried a complex arcane formation bound to a dark crystal structure.
"What are they doing?" Zeref asked.
"Executing the experimental crystallization technique," the commander answered.
Zeref watched the deployment. The four elite demons spread out, their positions forming a mathematical square surrounding Mizuki in the mud. Dark energy erupted from the ground beneath her boots.
Mizuki looked around. "What—"
A translucent dark crystal began forming in the air. Seiya turned. "Mizuki!"
He rushed toward her, but the demon horde pushed harder to block his path. The dark crystal grew, rising around Mizuki’s body. Her legs disappeared behind the hardening structure, then her waist, then her torso.
Seiya severed one of the blocking demons. Another massive demon attacked his flank. Mizuki shouted his name through the rising crystal. "Seiya!"
Seiya broke through the demonic line. He reached the edge of the dark formation and drove his massive sword directly into the muddy ground. Heroic power erupted from the blade. The dark formation shattered. One of the elite demons was thrown backward, crushed. Another screamed as the backlash melted its armor.
Mizuki forced her internal power outward against the structure, breaking the remaining dark crystal. The concussive blast threw the surviving elite demons away. Seiya rushed to Mizuki, catching her as she stumbled.
"Are you hurt?"
Mizuki shook her head. "No."
Seiya looked down at her legs. A jagged section of the dark crystal remained attached. It had formed around her lower leg before he interrupted the technique. He raised his sword and struck the stone, but the crystal did not fracture.
Mizuki placed her hand against his armor. "Seiya."
"I’ll get it off you."
"It doesn’t matter right now."
"It matters to me."
The memory dissolved into static. Kōya stared into the darkness. "Mom..."
The pulsing crystal shifted to another fragmented moment. The battlefield was emptying. The remaining demons retreated into the hills. Seiya stood beside Mizuki. He looked toward the retreating army.
"We need to move."
Mizuki nodded, but the heavy fragment of dark crystal remained attached to her skin.
The memory jumped forward in time. A towering silhouette—the Demon Lord—stood before a glowing crystal formation in a subterranean chamber. The jagged fragment of Mizuki’s dark crystallization rested on a stone table.
A lesser demon reached out toward it. The microsecond his clawed fingers touched the smooth surface, the flesh of his hand disintegrated into ash. The demon screamed.
The Demon Lord pulled him back by the scruff of his neck and threw him to the floor. "Do not touch it, fool."
The lesser demon clutched his smoking stump. "My Lord..."
"The holy protection remains intact."
"Whose protection?"
The Demon Lord stared at the stubborn crystal. "The Hero’s."
The memory ended. Kōya stood motionless in the Lair.
"So, that’s why."
He remembered the impenetrable protection that had surrounded his mother during his childhood. The hushed stories in the village. The way the Demon Lord’s power had failed when he had tried to seize her remains. It was not a natural crystallization. It was a demonic technique left incomplete. Seiya’s desperate holy magic on that battlefield had protected the portion of her that remained.
The dark crystal on the altar pulsed again. Zeref stood alone inside the Lair. The communication ring glowed.
"Report."
Zeref bowed his head. "The battlefield has collapsed. The vanguard has retreated."
"And the Hero?"
"Alive."
"The human woman?"
"Alive."
"Then withdraw the remaining forces immediately."
Zeref looked toward the darkness outside the fortress windows. "And the girl?"
"Continue monitoring her progress."
Zeref frowned. "She remains unaware of the seed."
"Good. And when she is finally ready?"
"Bring her directly here to the Lair," Zeref said. "Understood."
The memory ended. Kōya opened his eyes. The dying crystal was showing him pieces of a grand design. Yuna’s curse had never been an isolated act of a single monster. Zeref had merely been a cog in something vastly larger.
The crystal pulsed again. Zeref moved through a fortified underground passage, surrounded by armed Demon soldiers. He walked toward an enormous, iron-banded gate.
Beyond that gate lay a hostile territory Kōya had never seen before. Jagged black fortresses rose across the scarred horizon. Glowing crystals jutted from the sides of barren mountains. Blood-red Demon banners snapped in the wind. Hundreds of thousands of demons occupied the region. An empire of darkness.
Zeref stopped at the gate as a commander approached him. "The grand operation has been ordered."
Zeref looked at him. "Which operation?"
"The collection."
Zeref’s expression remained unchanged. "Of what?"
The commander hesitated. "Souls."
The memory distorted into a flurry of fragments. Screaming adventurers. Terrified prisoners. Marching demons. Slaughtered humans. Glowing crystals. Dragging chains. Bloody weapons. Piles of bodies.
Then, everything disappeared into static. Kōya clenched his fists. "What are you doing..."
The crystal threw off sparks as the memory shifted. Zeref was running. The stone corridor around him shook. Explosions echoed in the distance. He looked behind him, watching elite demons retreating in panic.
Someone screamed. "The Hero is coming!"
Zeref stopped. He raised Stormfront, lightning arcing around him as he prepared for the clash.
The memory shattered. Kōya staggered backward, catching himself against the edge of the stone altar. His breathing grew ragged. There were too many fragments, too many unanswered questions.
But one thing had become clear. Zeref had not acted alone. The curse had been a deliberate part of a massive system. A vast network of organized Demon forces collecting souls, raw power, arcane crystals, and innocent people. And Mizuki had been deliberately targeted for that operation.
Kōya looked back at the crystal. "Show me the rest."
The vessel pulsed weakly, opening an unstable memory. Zeref stood alone in a ruined chamber. Black blood covered his armor, his wings torn. Stormfront remained in his grip, its dark blade carrying the fading remnants of lightning.
He knelt on the stone, the dark communication ring lying on the floor beside him. A voice spoke from outside the boundaries of the memory.
"Zeref."
He looked up. "Yes."
"You failed."
Zeref clenched his bloody teeth. "The Hero interfered with the extraction."
"Then recover your strength and try again."
"And the girl?"
Silence. Zeref looked toward the darkness. "I will personally bring her to the Lair when she is ready."
"You have been given more than enough time. Do not fail me again."
The memory ended. The dark crystal’s light dimmed to a flicker. The stream of residual Demonic Mana entering it was becoming weaker. Kōya felt the connection slipping away.
He reached toward the crystal. "Wait."
The next memory appeared, broken. Static fragments flashed in rapid succession: Zeref standing. Zeref running. Zeref fighting. An endless Demon army. A looming dark castle. A woman screaming. Mizuki. Seiya. Yuna. Stormfront. The curse. Glowing crystals.
Then darkness.
Kōya reached his hand into the aura. "Show me!"
The dying crystal pulsed one last time. White-hot pain exploded through Kōya’s skull. He fell to one knee, clutching his head as unfiltered images rushed through his mind. Flashes of Zeref’s entire life in agonizing fragments. Ancient battlefields, cruel orders, ruined strongholds. Yuna. Stormfront. Mizuki. Seiya. The construction of the Lair. The planting of the curse. The massive collection.
Everything collided at once.
Kōya cried out, the sound echoing through the empty Lair. The dark crystal cracked down the middle. Pure golden Heroic Power flared from his left side, while violet-black Demonic Mana flared from his right. The psychic overload pushed both powers to their limits, tearing at his physical endurance as the twin forces burned simultaneously.
He slammed his scarred hand against the stone altar. "Stop!"
The flood of memories stopped. Kōya remained on one knee, blood running from his nose and dripping onto the stone. He breathed in ragged gasps. He looked up at the cracked crystal. It had darkened completely.
Kōya forced himself to stand.
He instinctively understood the limits of what he had absorbed. The transferred Demonic essence was incomplete. A massive portion of Zeref’s memories had been destroyed during his physical death. Another portion was too fragmented to recover. Crucial secrets remained locked beyond his reach.
Kōya wiped the blood from his face. "There are still things I don’t know about this war."
The broken crystal remained silent. Kōya looked toward the ruined entrance of the Hero’s Lair. Freezing rain fell steadily beyond the threshold. The storm had weakened, but the darkness outside remained absolute.
His mind turned to Zeref. A Demon Peer who had watched a young girl suffer for years, cultivating a parasitic curse inside her soul. A Demon Peer who had obeyed cruel orders from someone higher in the hierarchy, possessing full knowledge of the massive collection of souls.
Yet, there had been an anomaly buried in the memories.
During the final chaotic fragments, Kōya had seen the Demon Peer hesitate. Not during a battle or when he was dying. Earlier. When the memory had briefly shown lesser demons suffering on the battlefield. Zeref had watched them burn, and he had looked away.
For a fleeting instant, something approaching sorrow had crossed his ancient face. A high-ranking Demon who was supposed to care exclusively about power had registered the suffering of another Demon.
Kōya frowned. "Why?" he asked the empty room. "Why would a monster like you care?"
The dead crystal gave no answer. Kōya looked down at his scarred hands. His right hand carried the power of a Demon Lord. His left hand carried the weight of Yuna’s Heroic legacy. Both powers existed within him, separate and competing for dominance. Neither demanded that he become something he was not.
He remembered Zeref’s final confusion. *Hero. Demon. How can both exist?*
Kōya closed his fingers into fists. Because neither one owned him.
He refused to excuse what Zeref had done. Yuna’s suffering had been real. Her parents were dead. Her life had been methodically stolen. No hidden explanation could change that fact.
But the fragmented memories had shown him something else. Zeref had merely been a pawn in something larger. Somewhere deep in the dark, beyond this ruined Lair, that bloody operation was still continuing.
Kōya looked toward the dark east, his mother’s direction. The heart of the Demon-controlled territory, the place where the memories had shown massive armies and glowing crystals.
He tightened his grip on the golden hilt of the Hero Sword. "Mom," he said quietly. "I am coming."
He turned to leave, then stopped. Stormfront lay abandoned on the wet stone floor. The Lightning Sword remained intact, its dark blade carrying the fading remnants of Zeref’s lightning.
Kōya walked back toward it. He looked down at the weapon Yuna had once carried into battle. He remembered her. Training in the mud. Laughing by the lake. Storing her Heroic Mana in the dark.
*Keep going.*
Kōya crouched and picked up the heavy sword. He did not know what remained of Yuna’s connection to Stormfront, but he would not leave it in the dirt.
He stood up. The cracked crystal gave one final, weak pulse. A fleeting image appeared in the stone. Zeref stood alone on a high ridge, looking down toward something beyond a burning battlefield. His expression was different—not the arrogant Demon Peer, nor the calculating cultivator of curses. Just a tired, ancient figure staring into the distance.
A single thought echoed through the dying memory.
*Why do they cry for one another?*
The image disappeared. Kōya stared at the empty space in the crystal. The haunting question remained as a tragic mystery.
He turned toward the ruined entrance. Outside, the storm was breaking apart. The black clouds remained thick, and the freezing rain continued to fall, but the lightning had stopped.
Kōya stepped through the shattered doorway. The corrupted Hero’s Lair remained silent behind him. Ahead lay the unknown. Mizuki was imprisoned somewhere beyond it. The true architects responsible for this nightmare were still alive. Somewhere within that darkness was the truth behind Yuna’s curse, Mizuki’s incomplete crystallization, and the massive collection of souls.
Kōya adjusted his grip around Stormfront’s hilt. He began walking east.
He did not know the name of the territory waiting beyond the horizon. He did not know how many demons stood between him and his mother. He did not know what truths remained hidden inside the missing portion of Zeref’s memories.
But he knew one thing. He had spent enough time following the traces left behind by other people. Now, he would hunt them. And whoever was waiting for him would learn the exact same lesson Zeref had just learned.
Kōya was no longer choosing between being a Hero or a Demon. He was becoming something that belonged to neither. Something that carried both.
He walked into the freezing rain, and the ruined Hero’s Lair disappeared into the darkness behind him.
