Chapter 2680: The Impersonator(2)
"What the hell do you think you’re all doing?!"
A thunderous voice suddenly erupted through the chamber.
The Supreme General rose from his seat and continued, "Have you all forgotten where we are right now?! Unless there is an active threat, it is prohibited to draw your weapons!"
"But there’s an active threat standing right there! The Impersonator is in this very room!" the representative from Ember City exclaimed as he pointed at Yuan.
"Bullshit!" the Supreme General snapped back. "Nothing in that video proves he’s the Impersonator—or that such a creature even exists!"
Then, the Heavenly Furnace representative gestured toward his soldiers and spoke, "Lower your weapons. Supreme General Tian is correct in this situation. Everything in the video so far is only hearsay. Just because they called him the Impersonator doesn’t immediately make him one, nor have I seen any convincing evidence on the subject."
Once the soldiers from Heavenly Furnace lowered and put away their weapons, the others quickly followed suit. However, the soldiers from Ember City remained on high alert, their weapons still drawn.
"If you continue pointing your weapons at one of my soldiers, I will consider it a breach of the treaty—and a declaration of war against Gaia’s Heaven," the Supreme General warned, his sharp gaze fixed on Ember City’s soldiers.
"Put them away."
The Ember City representative turned toward them and gave the order.
A moment later, he continued, "Before we continue the recording, I would like to hear from that gentleman who resembles the Impersonator about what he was doing in the Black Zone alone. As far as I am aware, Corporals at Gaia’s Heaven don’t have the authority to leave the city alone, much less visit the Black Zone."
"At that time, I was lost," Yuan calmly responded.
"Lost? That doesn’t explain why you’re alone or why you’re in the Black Zone."
"I won’t go into the details since it mostly involves some drama with my fellow soldiers, but we were carrying out a mission in the Purple Zone. I ended up separating from them and entering the Black Zone, where I got lost because I had never been there before."
"Do you have anything to say about that, Supreme General Tian?"
"If you’re asking whether I knew about his circumstances, then yes. I’m fully aware of why he was alone in the Black Zone, and he’s not lying."
"Very well. Then let us continue watching the recording."
The footage continued the next moment, showing Yuan fighting the Void Specters and defeating them with ease.
"If he’s also a Void Specter, why is he fighting other Void Specters?" someone commented after seeing this.
"Just keep watching," replied Ember City’s representative.
"My lord! Do you see how fast he kills the Void Specters?! He’s cleaning them up like trash!"
"I told you that guy isn’t human!"
"How is he using so much energy when his cultivation is only at the Fifth Ascension? Where is he getting his power from?"
"Isn’t it obvious?! He’s recovering his energy from the Void Specters that he devours!"
"So he’s the one digging up all those Unknown Ores and leaving them behind... No wonder he didn’t seem the slightest bit interested in them before. But what could possibly be the purpose of doing that?"
"It’s obviously a trap to lure us in! He knows how valuable Unknown Ores are to us, so he’s using them as bait!"
"..."
"..."
The video flickered, skipping to the moment the atmosphere began changing.
"Th-This phenomenon! The Void Hunter... It’s going to appear!"
"Shit! Shit! Shit! Do we run away?!"
"No! Not yet! Not until we see how that monster will respond to the Void Hunter!"
Almost everyone in the chamber drew a sharp breath the moment the Void Hunter appeared.
Even though they were only watching recorded footage, its unfathomable presence seemed to radiate through the screen, making it feel as though the Void Hunter were standing in the room with them at that very moment.
"They’re really going to fight!"
The footage then showed the Void Hunter striking Yuan squarely in the stomach, an attack that should have ended his life instantly, as anything touched by the Void Hunter was supposed to be vaporized into thin air.
Yet, Yuan did not die and was merely sent flying into the distance.
"H-He survived?!" The Rising Sun’s representative exclaimed in shock after witnessing someone survive the Void Hunter’s physical blow for the first time.
The recording continued.
"D-Did he just survive a punch from the Void Hunter?!"
"This confirms it! There’s no way he’s human if he can survive being touched by a Void Specter!"
The footage ended there, and the representative from Ember City spoke.
"The Impersonator and the Void Hunter went on to fight each other for several weeks. If any of you have been wondering who the Void Hunter was fighting during that incident, now you have your answer."
He pointed directly at Yuan and continued, "Any normal human would’ve vaporized if they were touched by the Void Hunter, unless they are a Void Specter wearing human skin!"
The room fell silent as everyone turned their attention to Yuan, seemingly waiting for him to explain himself.
Yuan then spoke.
"So I’m a Void Specter just because the Void Hunter decided to spare me for some reason? Why did you stop the footage there? I’m sure you recorded my entire fight with the Void Hunter—or, more accurately, the Void Hunter beating my ass for weeks straight. Why aren’t you showing that part?"
"Because all of that is irrelevant. The recording ended with the Void Hunter killing every one of my soldiers, along with the soldiers from Spirit City. Yet somehow, you’re still alive. Why is that? Is it because you’re the same kind of creature as the Void Hunter? And why aren’t you affected by its touch?"
Yuan sighed. "Unfortunately, I can’t explain why the Void Hunter chose to spare me while killing everyone else. For the record, I’m just as curious about the reason as you are. As for how I managed to survive its physical attacks... it was probably because of my physique, though I can’t say for certain."
