Chapter 2677: Major Gu’s Disappearance(2)

  • Next Chapter

After hearing the Supreme General’s words, Colonel Gu slowly withdrew his arm from Yuan.

"I apologize for my behavior just now. I acted without thinking," he said.

Yuan then spoke. "I don’t know what your problem is, but I truly have no idea where Major Gu is."

"Are you sure you’re not misunderstanding something?" Ironwoman remarked.

Colonel Gu took a deep breath before replying, "No, you’re right. It must have been a misunderstanding. My mistake."

"You should be saying that to Sergeant Yuan."

Colonel Gu clenched his hands into tight fists as he looked at Yuan and forced out the words through gritted teeth.

"It was my mistake. I’m sorry."

"Everyone makes mistakes, so I’ll forgive you. Just make sure it doesn’t happen again," Yuan said.

"Anyway, now that things are resolved, I’m going to return to my bath."

"Ahem!" The Supreme General loudly cleared his throat before speaking, "Meet me at my residence once you are done. I need to have a word with you."

"Sure."

Afterward, everyone returned to their own residence.

"That bastard is definitely behind Gu Ming’s disappearance!"

Although Colonel Gu had lost a great deal of face just now, at least he had managed to confirm his suspicions about Yuan’s involvement in Major Gu’s disappearance.

A moment later, he pulled out his phone and contacted General Gu, seeking advice on how he should proceed.

Meanwhile, Yuan went to meet with the Supreme General.

However, when he arrived, the Supreme General wasn’t alone, as the Midnight Squad was also present.

"I’ll get straight to the point. Are you involved with Major Gu’s disappearance?" the Supreme General questioned as soon as the door closed.

"What makes you think I am?" Yuan asked.

"That doesn’t answer my question. I’ll ask you again. Are you involved in Major Gu’s disappearance in any way? If the next words out of your mouth aren’t the truth, I’ll have you cut down where you stand."

The Supreme General’s voice was harsh, and the severity in his gaze made it clear that he was completely serious.

"..."

After a moment of silence, Yuan sighed before responding clearly, "No, I am not involved with Major Gu’s disappearance."

The Supreme General’s eyes widened slightly at Yuan’s response, as though he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

"Even though you clearly have a motive?"

Yuan narrowed his eyes and replied in a disappointed tone, "I can understand why Colonel Gu would suspect me, but for you to believe I had something to do with Major Gu’s disappearance as well? I’m starting to wonder if you’re actually on General Gu’s side."

Hearing Yuan’s words, the Supreme General abruptly slammed his fist into the table beside him, splitting it in half.

"Don’t you dare utter such nonsense before me again! I’d rather be dead than side with that slimeball!"

"Can you really blame me for thinking that with how you’re treating me right now?" Yuan shrugged.

The Supreme General rubbed the bridge of his nose for a moment before speaking again, "Let’s get back onto the topic. So you claim that you have nothing to do with Major Gu’s disappearance, is that correct?"

"That is correct."

"Are you willing to swear on it?"

"I swear on my adoptive parents that I’m telling the truth. If I’m lying, may the heavens strike them dead!"

"..."

"Fine. You may leave."

"Do you believe me?"

"No, not really. However, I don’t have evidence."

"And you won’t find any. Because I really have nothing to do with Major Gu’s disappearance."

The Supreme General didn’t respond and merely gestured for him to leave.

"See you tomorrow," said Yuan as he walked out the door.

Once Yuan was gone, the Supreme General spoke aloud. "What do you think? Do you believe him?"

The next moment, Ironwoman emerged from one of the nearby rooms, having listened to the entire conversation.

"It’s certainly difficult to believe him, especially given the circumstances. As for what I personally think... I believe in him—as a person."

"Quite a specific choice of words..." the Supreme General remarked, narrowing his eyes at her.

"If you don’t believe him, why did you let him walk?" she then asked.

"Because I don’t have any evidence against him," he said with a nonchalant shrug. "Even if I am convinced he did it, as long as I don’t have solid evidence, I cannot touch him."

Ironwoman shook her head and sighed. "This is exactly why some people call you the Law-Abiding Fanatic."

"If I, as the Supreme General, don’t follow the rules and regulations, then who will? I have to set an example, regardless of who it inconveniences or benefits."

"And yet here we are, with General Gu and countless others taking advantage of that very principle."

"Nobody can hide forever, and the moment I catch them..." The Supreme General muttered, purposefully leaving his sentence unfinished.

Time passed swiftly, and in the blink of an eye, it was 0800 the following morning. Everyone gathered as instructed, ready to attend the assembly.

Everyone, of course, except Major Gu, who was still nowhere to be found.

"I take it Major Gu still hasn’t returned?" the Supreme General asked Colonel Gu.

"No..." Colonel Gu replied, slowly shaking his head.

"If he doesn’t return by the time we are done with the assembly, I will send a search squad to look for him."

"Yes, Supreme General."

Although the Supreme General did not fully believe Yuan, he also couldn’t dismiss the possibility that Major Gu had deliberately disappeared on his own to frame Yuan, giving General Gu even more ammunition to use against him.

That being said, unless Major Gu was prepared to remain hidden for a long time or abandon his identity entirely, such a possibility seemed unlikely.

A few moments later, one of the servants approached them and asked, "Are we prepared to head to the assembly?"

The Supreme General nodded. "We’re ready."

"Then allow me to guide you there."

With that, the servant began leading them toward the massive white building in the distance, which had loomed on the horizon ever since their arrival in the Central District.
