Chapter 115: Chapter 115: Troubling Senior Brother Yang to Run an Errand
’Could it be him?’
Jackal swallowed nervously. The weakest disciples from the Three Immortal Sects participating in the trial were at the Body Tempering Late Stage, while those from other families were at the Body Tempering Middle Stage at minimum.
According to the latest intelligence gathered by the Fire Wolf Gang, the only exception was that Second Grade Spirit Chef from Purple Cloud Valley. Every power was desperate to find him first and obtain his Spiritual Cuisine.
But he had never appeared. Judging from Yang Haichen’s words, however, it seemed the Fire Wolf Gang had hit the jackpot—in the worst way possible. The severity of the situation had just been invisibly ratcheted up another notch.
"You’re smart, but you’re also unlucky."
Yang Haichen glanced at him and prepared to leave. He remembered the Loose Cultivators who sold Spirit Beast Flesh and Spirit Rice there usually went back early. If he was delayed, he wouldn’t be able to eat any Spiritual Cuisine tonight.
In the past, he would have looked down on the simple meals made by those Loose Cultivators, but now that Junior Brother Liu was willing to prepare Spiritual Cuisine, any delay would be a tremendous loss.
"Fellow Daoist Yang, I wonder if you could put in a good word for me?"
Jackal lost his last shred of hope. The Fire Wolf Gang was already on the edge of a cliff. If word of what happened this afternoon got out, it would become a gale strong enough to blow them off, and the slightest misstep would mean being smashed to pieces.
"Frankly, based on my dealings with my junior brother, he couldn’t care less about the Fire Wolf Gang, nor does he care about the hundred Spirit Stones you took.
You have to understand, a single serving of his Spiritual Cuisine sells for two thousand Spirit Stones back in Purple Cloud Valley. The longer you delay me here, the smaller my chances of buying ingredients. And that junior brother of mine does intend to sell his Spiritual Cuisine..."
Yang Haichen spoke nonchalantly. As he did, the passing disciples from the Three Immortal Sects all stopped, their gazes turning toward him with a newfound fervor.
Everyone knew Yang Haichen had a connection to the Second Grade Spirit Chef. The people gathered here were all at either the Body Tempering Peak or the Body Tempering Late Stage. As the trial grew more intense, they were all desperate to break through to the Meridian Passage Realm as quickly as possible to catch up to the true prodigies who were still in the outer trial areas.
Spiritual Cuisine was a powerful aid in this regard. In a competition where every second counted, let alone getting a head start of a day or two, even half an hour’s lead could provide a massive advantage.
In contrast, everyone’s gaze toward Jackal turned dangerous. In truth, no one knew what the Fire Wolf Gang had actually done—it’s not like the gang would shout it from the rooftops—but if the Three Immortal Sects wanted to find out, it was impossible to hide.
"Fellow Daoist Yang, please calm your anger. From this day forward, the Fire Wolf Gang will cover the cost of all of his ingredients."
Sensing the atmosphere around them, Jackal shot a meaningful look at a trusted subordinate behind him. The man, under immense pressure, slowly departed.
"You really think that’s enough to smooth things over?"
Yang Haichen looked at the surrounding disciples from the Three Immortal Sects with a smile on his face. He didn’t know if Junior Brother Liu would forgive the Fire Wolf Gang, but as long as Liu Chen didn’t explicitly say so, these people—and even the Loose Cultivators lurking in the shadows—would assume he hadn’t. Then, it wouldn’t be an empty threat to say that not even a chicken or dog of the Fire Wolf Gang would be left alive.
"Fellow Daoist Yang, please follow me."
Jackal sighed in resignation. There was a pillar of light in the backyard of the Fire Wolf Gang’s residential area. The news might not have leaked out publicly, but plenty of people knew about it in secret. He had originally planned to use it as a bargaining chip for the Fire Wolf Gang to leave Fire Dragon Valley.
But now, it seemed if he wasn’t willing to part with the pillar of light, his gang wouldn’t just fail to leave Fire Dragon Valley later—it would be wiped out tonight.
Yang Haichen and Jackal found a relatively secluded alley and began to speak in low voices.
"Fellow Daoist Yang must know about the pillar of light within the Fire Wolf Gang’s territory. I am willing to gift it to him, if only he will spare the Fire Wolf Gang."
Jackal said with a sense of helplessness. Whether the other party forgave them or not came down to a single sentence. But that one sentence could lead to the annihilation of his entire gang, and those who would carry it out might just be looking for priority access to the Spiritual Cuisine.
"I can’t agree to that on his behalf. After all, I’m not the one you offended. However, I can relay your message to Junior Brother Liu."
Yang Haichen nodded. ’Whether this works or not is up to Junior Brother Liu,’ he thought. ’But it probably won’t be an issue. After all, the original plan was to trade Spiritual Cuisine for the pillar of light, and even then, we might not have gotten it.’
"I’ll have to trouble Fellow Daoist Yang, then. If this is successful, the Fire Wolf Gang will be sure to reward you handsomely."
Jackal finally breathed a sigh of relief. Based on his subordinate’s report, the Spirit Chef didn’t put on any airs, whether he was fleeing or crying for help. The chances of this working out were high.
"It’s no trouble at all."
Yang Haichen waved his hand dismissively and turned to leave. In the alley, Jackal couldn’t help but sigh. But in the next second, two figures appeared in the alley, one after the other.
The first was from Thunder Mountain, the second from Qingxu Hall.
Faced with this situation, Jackal had no choice but to explain the whole affair in detail. Until the Spirit Chef made his stance clear, the Fire Wolf Gang would know no peace.
As for the Fire Wolf Gang’s pillar of light, which could never have been hidden for long anyway, it basically already belonged to the Spirit Chef. Now, even if the other two sects got wind of it and seized the pillar, they would completely lose any chance of getting Spiritual Cuisine.
-----------------
"Junior Brother, what do you think?"
Yang Haichen relayed the entire matter to Liu Chen and awaited his decision.
"Sorry to have troubled you, Senior Brother Yang."
Liu Chen directly took out his Token and handed it to Senior Brother Yang. The Token didn’t have to be used by him personally, nor did he need to be nearby when the pillar of light was activated. Liu Chen had already verified all of this.
Unless Liu Chen died in the process, the Token would have the same effect no matter who held it, and the pillar of light would naturally be considered as activated by him.
"No trouble at all. Just focus on your cultivation, Junior Brother."
Yang Haichen took the Token and left immediately. Liu Chen checked on Senior Brother Ren’s condition with his senses, and after confirming everything was fine, he returned to his room to continue cultivating.
As soon as Yang Haichen stepped out of the alley where the courtyard was located, Jackal hurried over and handed him a Storage Ring.
"Fellow Daoist Yang, these are all the ingredients we could gather nearby. The Fire Wolf Gang is rushing to other areas to collect more."
Jackal was extremely anxious. The number of Cultivators watching him with their Spiritual Senses was growing. If the Spirit Chef was unwilling to forgive him, the Fire Wolf Gang’s years of accumulated wealth, and even the pillar of light, would all be carved up and divided among those Cultivators.
Spirit Stones hadn’t been particularly important within Fire Dragon Valley before, but if the Spirit Chef started selling Spiritual Cuisine, their value would become paramount.
"Relax. This is Junior Brother Liu’s Token. The pillar of light and all that doesn’t matter, but if something happens to this Token..."
Yang Haichen handed Liu Chen’s Token to him. Under normal circumstances, a Token couldn’t be destroyed unless its corresponding trial participant died. However, a Token could be lost. If a Cultivator lost their Token, they would be unable to leave immediately at the end of the trial.
Others might have to make the arduous journey out on their own, but in Liu Chen’s case, the Sect Leader himself would probably come in to find him.
"I understand, I understand..."
